A flat tax is incredibly unfair. The gas tax works in a way that charges you per gallons used. Drive more or drive larger, more damaging vehicles? Pay more. A flat tax on electric and hybrid totally ignores the lighter, less damage vehicle and the fact that most electric drivers drive less to begin with as they are not exactly super long distance vehicles of choice.

I haven't even put a lick of thought into this, I would hope that f'n legislators have come to this conclusion as well. It would seem easy enough to have the customer take it in to the dealership or certified smog checker to have the odometer checked every registration. A simple five second drive though, stamp and sign should be enough.

But what do I know, I write fictional letters to God pretending to be a non-fictional person writing letters to God.

Oh look, another 'let's tax the liberal hippies' law.

A rational tax to cover the long term costs of the road system? Good idea. Although DNRTFA, since this is NC I'm gonna assume this is not the model legislation for the brave new era of electric cars.

$50-100? Oh, we must be outraged?

Seriously, that seems reasonable.

Any tax seems reasonable as long as you don't have to pay it.

Steve Zodiac: Any tax seems reasonable as long as you don't have to pay it.

No, I mean the cost benefit analysis to ensure people pay the same for the infrastructure they use.

NC taxes at $0.57 per gallon. This seems reasonable to equate the costs paid by other motorists. We're not even factoring in the tax incentives given for the car because those are federal taxes.

It's a modest fee for use. I pay $300+ per year to use a bridge to go to work. Other people who don't use it don't pay that.

The money has to some from somewhere.

Hybrid drivers should be outraged. I mean, their cars are  hybrids, for chrissake. HYBRIDS. Hybrids don't damage roads or cause any wear and tear to infrastructure. They don't take up any space on the road, either, which is why it's so totally cool that some areas let them use HOV lanes even when it's only the driver in them. Driving a hybrid means you have zero impact on society when you're driving, and therefore should be exempt from the fees that drivers with less concern for the environment must pay.

But don't give up on hybrids, FFS, just because of a few bucks that you shouldn't have been exempt from in the first place.  You're still doing a good thing.

What part of the $0.57 per gallon tax is this "improving roads" tax? Let's say it's a nickel of that fifty seven cents per gallon.

Hybrid owners will be ahead of the game after 1,000 miles. Electric owners will be ahead after 2,000 miles. And if it's more than a nickel then the miles go down.

Eh. Not that big of a deal.

Wait, I screwed that calculation up. Serves me right, trying to do math after drinking some beers.

Actually, hybrid cars weigh about 10% more than a super long distance vehicle, which may make them safer. But that's ok, just keep on writing those letters, it's probably easier than giving a lick of thought into anything you post on an internet forum

Oh for crying out loud. "MPG" is a terrible proxy for "wear and tear your vehicle inflicts on roads", and this tax helps correct that.  The whole point of an efficient economy is to make sure that those who use, pay.

Freaking anti-taxxervaxxers.

2013-05-29 03:20:16 AM
Wow. Conservative morons actually believe the reason people don't want to drive gas-guzzling cars is to get out of paying a tax. It's like they're obsessed with taxes or something.

2013-05-29 03:21:03 AM
I support the new tax tax.

2013-05-29 03:28:25 AM
Without reading the article, I can tell you that gas taxes pay for an incredibly small portion of road construction and maintenance here in CA. It ONLY pays for Interstate roads, which comprise about two percent of the roads in CA, and it only covers about twenty five percent of those funds at that. The rest (>99%) comes out of general funds, which we all pay into through sales tax, property tax, and income tax.

Yeah, the next time somebody in arms reach tells me cyclists shouldn't be allowed to ride on the road because they don't pay taxes is getting punched in the mouf.

2013-05-29 03:30:57 AM
I don't drive a hybrid and EV because I want to save money. If that was it, I'd buy something cheaper. I drive hybrids and EVs because I want to make the world better for my children. When I grew up, I had blue skies, green grass, and clean water. Nowadays with gas guzzlers everywhere, I feel like any chance to stem the tide by my actions is worth it.

I care about the environment, that's why I drive non-polluting cars.

2013-05-29 03:32:17 AM
I think we should add a transportation tax to electricity.  Then people will buy electric cars so  they can get what they're paying for.

I totally agree. The worst are the cagers why try to run you off the road or follow too closely. Whenever that happens, I just take a swing at them with my U lock. Sometimes I connect and take out their windshield or their side mirror. I hate to do it, but some of these idiots need to be taught a lesson.

When I moved back to California a few months ago, one of the perks that I found was that they built a toll road that easily shaves an hour off of the trip to my parents house. While the freeways to and from my folks place is usually jammed, the toll road is always clear.

The irony is I'm happy to pay the $5 in total fees it takes me to go either way in my crappy Camry. When I get to the toll booths, it's the old women in newer model BMW's, Lexus and Mercedes who are biatching about the cost to the toll booth attendant.

Or, you know, you could obey the traffic laws you yell at everyone else when they don't do.

What's the word for  that again? Mitocracy? Misocracy. Hitocracy.

I'm sure I have it around here somewhere....

Oh, yeah. HYPOCRISY.

I'll be thinking of you next time some entitled asshole decides to jump off the curb infront of me, without signaling, and force me to lock up my brakes to keep from turning him into windshield grease.

Maybe you shouldn't define yourself soley by association with people like this. The bad cyclists ruin it for everyone.

Asia really has the right of it. Cyclists here are crazy. But they know their place in the world ranks about 2 tons less mass than a car. Physics trumps 'tude and we all want to get where we're going without dying. Millions of people on bicycles in Tokyo, but not a single "cyclist", and thus everyone's got a good opinion of people on bikes.

BWAAHAHAHA!!!  And replace it with the overhead of the "Prebate" system, whatever it took to track what was an "original" purchase and the cost of policing to limit the inevitable blackmarkets that would spring up.  Honestly, nobody takes this shiat seriously anymore, right?  There's so much wrong with it that it's not even worth going in to.  Google can do that.   http://lmgtfy.com/?q=fairtax+stupid

Between the pollution caused by vehicle manufacturing, and all the associated industries (mining, steel, etc...) you're doing much more for the environment if you drive your current vehicle for a few more years than buy a new one, hybrids/elec included.

2013-05-29 04:16:45 AM
For everyone saying its only fair that they pay for driving on the roads, do you not understand they still do pay tax on the gasoline they buy?   It isnt like they are somehow exempt from paying gasoline tax because they have a hybrid.    Hell, what about a hybrid escalade or something that still only gets in the mid 20's. Are they not paying a fair share of gasoline tax?

What does the fact that there are numerous taxes have to do with the fact that the situation you prescibe as the solution is a silly, unworkable system?

Less traffic hazard? Yeah, there's no danger from the people swerving into the next lane to get by the cyclist. No danger from all the cars bunched up behind him. And as for the environment, the gas wasted by all those cars slowing down to get around the cyclist is way more than he thinks he's saving.
