My favourite quote so far is when Rob Ford was straight out asked whether it was him in the photograph with a murdered drug dealer, and his brother jumped:

Rob has taken thousands of pictures with young black men, with their hats on, with their little funny signs, and everything else.

They then called the caller racist for asking the question.

We have a lot of mouth breathers here.

I know its bad, but I can't help but revel in the epic levels of schadenford.

It also turns out that in the other shooting, (the one that killed the guy making the funny hand sign) the guy they have in custody had this to say:

Nisar Hashimi, 23, turned himself in April 4 after he was named a suspect. He has been charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder in the death of Smith and shooting of Khattak.
During a recent visit to the Toronto jail, a reporter was told by Hashimi he had never heard of or seen Smith until he was charged in his murder.
"I'm innocent," he said. "I don't know these guys. . . . I don't know why I'm here."

I really wish that Gawker hadn't blundered into the middle of the story.

If the Toronto Star investigative unit was chasing this down we'd have known everything once they were ready to publish the story.  I don't have much use for the Star's editorial slant, but their investigate journalism group is probably the best in Canada.

The funny thing being that all he has to do is organize a press conference, hit some rock, and then explain how those lefty idiots on the Toronto City Council are wasting tax-payer dollars, and he'd be re-elected.

Incidentally, if you want to know why this guy can get elected, it's because of people like this.

I'm not defending, I'm pointing out a fact. Rob Ford has sued and won on at least three occasions. Those have left him with over $300,000 in unrecoverable legal fees. This may have some bearing on a reluctance to sue, now and in the future.
I have no problem with investigative journalism, I have a problem with fairness and balanced reporting. A Toronto councilor was also recently convicted of impaired driving but because she was left leaning it has been largely not reported and a non-issue. Paint everyone with the same brush or put the brush away.

That Toronto councillor (Bailao) plead guilty and took her lumps in court and from the media.  That's the difference, if Rob Ford came out and said, "The accusations are true.  I have a substance abuse problem and I will be entering rehab" (like his former CoS is reported to have told him to do before he was fired) then there'd be a lot more sympathy for him.  The news cycle would have moved on.

The whole story will still come out.  Maybe not the video that started it all but now the reporters and folks in the 'hood know that a video is a $200K lottery ticket.  Sooner or later the Star or the Globe will get someone to go on the record with something that can be corroborated or they'll get a picture or a new video of him buying/using the stuff.  Someone will sell him out.

Are you talking about Paul Ainsle? He confessed to it during the first week of Fordcrackapolooza. He timed it so it would die quickly. The other councilor had a few rough days afterwards, especially once it came out she was out with the casino lobby.

As for the court cases, one was the improper use of city letterhead, one was a libel suit form a restrauntuer, I'm not sure what he last one is off the top of my head. But in two of he cases Ford was he defendant, not the plaintiff.

The reason that the Fords won't sue is that a lot of things could come out in trial that the mayor would like to remain hidden. There would be no dodging questions, like he is doing now.

Just curious, is there any actual authority for that $300,000 figure, or was it just extracted from ford's very flatulent anal cavity.

ford was charged with conflict of interest. he lost his trial & won his appeal. his costs were in the neighbourhood of $116,000. he could ask council to pay his costs, but said he won't. ford was also sued for defamation & won. he has claimed that his costs are in the neighbourhood of $100,000, but i cannot find reference to the courts decision on whether he is entitled to costs and, if so, in what amount. typically, the winner in a lawsuit gets costs in the range of 40% of the actual fees, subject to the effect on costs offers to settle, and such.

i cannot find any reference to ford suing anyone.

in a defamation lawsuit, damages can be extremely high. for a public figure of ford's, er ..., stature, a 7-figure payout is not unprecedented. both ford and his brother have been represented by a very competent defamation lawyer. if this was the slam dunk that ford would have you believe, he would be all over a lawsuit, like a fat kid on a smartie.
