I once offended someone over the phone in a professional sense.  I was working at Primerica, cold calling people.  After a month of abuse and people hanging up on me, I decided to play a game.  If they hung up on me during my phone pitch, my next phrase would finish up the sentence implying sex with their mother.  One call I said "This is just an interview to see if we..."  I thought he hung up, so I said "can get it on with your slut bag mother."

He hadn't hung up, but I did.

I'm guessing they're the type of people who think subtlety is overrated. No offense to unsubtle people who aren't also racists.

I did pizza delivery for a few years and worked with a variety of characters, including a few racists. Though there was some validity as to what kind of tip to expect in certain neighborhoods (Both very poor and very wealthy neighborhoods generally yielded smaller tips from my experience, though there were certainly exceptions. The Best tippers were mostly in lower middle class neighborhoods.), I think the racists tended to be less than subtle with their biases and likely brought about the lack of tips through their own behavior. Being friendly to your customers instead of acting like you don't want to be there tends to increase the chances for and the amount of a tip.

The customer seems to infer he paid his usual 21% tip by showing the pizza receipt as evidence.  I think he believes the "Delivery Fee" of $2.40 is counted as the tip.  But doesn't Papa John's get that money?

I'm guessing the customer paid the $15.26 bill and didn't give anything extra to the delivery guy (thinking the $2.40 was the tip) so that's where the gripe from the delivery guy not getting tipped comes from (obviously I'm not condoning the voice mail).

Because the driver was white, and the thugs were black.

You know how some places have that 'special instructions' section of their order? Well I always fill mine out like so: 'Please send your scrawniest, whitest delivery driver, for no particular reason.'

The relevance is that there will be more uproar, outrage, press attention and hand-wringing and marches and such over this, when somebody merely overheard themselves being disparaged, then there ever have or will be for actual crimes of the sort I mentioned because, you know, they don't fit the narrative.

First, what narrative?

Second, if these "actual crimes" are being covered up, how did you manage to hear about them?

Third, why do you think there should be a competition between one sort of outrage and another?

That reminds me of a time I was ordering pizza for an after-hours work party. The girl was giving me a hard time on the phone (something to do with the address) and had me on hold for a long time. Someone asked me how much longer it would be and I said "I'll know when pizza biatch finally gets back to me." Then I hear a click and she says "I can still hear you, you know." I was pretty mortified.

In my defense I was pretty drunk and we'd been playing Unreal Tournament most of the night swearing at each other.

Seriously?  That sounds like just plain bad business sense.  People who use a substance that makes them hungry and unable to drive at the same time are the perfect demographic for pizza delivery.

Calls into my businessplace are recorded, and every now and again we review them to improve how they're handled.  Something I didn't know before I heard it, and apparently most people don't know, is that when you call in and you're put on hold, you're still being recorded.

Seriously?  You seriously believe that?

But, more to the point, why is this particular issue so important to you?  I realize why the issue is important to the author of the book you linked to: there's money to be made from half-witted racists...but, why is the issue import to you, personally?

And, yes, this book does seem to be targeted toward not-too-bright racists, even if it it garners praise from useful idiots like Thomas Sowell.

It doesn't say (at least I couldn't find it).  $20 = 31% tip; the delivery fee = 21% "tip" which the customer states he gave the delivery guy.  I found it odd the customer said he gave his usual 21% tip to the delivery guy.  21% tipping?  My bet is on the delivery fee was thought to be the tip.

There's something weird going on with that label.  The order is $16.53 minus the $2.13 discount = $14.40.  Sales tax there is 6% which is $0.0864.  Which makes the total (without the delivery charge) $15.26 which is the big number in the box.   Which one would naturally assume is the total cost of the order.  But it's not.  The total cost is $17.66.

So I can forgive someone thinking that anything they pay above the big number in the box is a tip.

But that 21% is an oddly specific amount to tip.  21% of $15.26 is $3.20 for a total of $18.46.  So maybe he gave the guy $18.50.  I'd call that a 21% tip.  Adding 21% to 17.66 gives you $20.86 so maybe the guy paid $21 in cash but that seems unlikely because that would require doing the math and realizing that the big number in the box is wrong.  I don't generally break out the slide rule when presented with the check at a restaurant.  If the big number at the bottom is in the ballpark, I assume that it's correct.

But neither of those scenarios comes out with the guy thinking the $2.40 delivery charge was a 21% tip.  The math just doesn't work.  And, if he paid $18.46, the guy should have complained about the crappy tip under a dollar, not  no tip.

Nothing about this adds up.  Nothing!
