The father called on China's netizens to leave his son alone: "The kid has a good academic record, but is a little introverted. This is too much pressure for him to take."

No, you get caught doing something like that, you deserve the hell headed your way.

/give it a year, no one will remember

You know what else would be awesome? If Chinese internet denizens would identify and shame those who traffic in ivory and rhino horn. Maybe identify those who skin animals alive and keep bears in cages for their bile.

indarwinsshadow: Let's get this straight. A 15 year old "boy" cried all night because he defaced the temple of Luxor? Exactly, what kind of retard assholes are they raising in China.
I've lived 46 years. I've yet to meet any 15 year who ever regretted any kind of nasty sh*t they've done. Most 15 year olds should be drafted and made to serve military service for 3 years. They're not much good for anything else.. They're idiots.

You're thinking of American kids.  He was Chinese, and probably had some sense of honor and personal responsibiilty and duty to his family and country instilled in him from day 1.  When his lapse was revealed, it brought this all back to him.

"The boy has known about it since Friday and cried all night. He has had to be moved around because reporters rushed to their house for interviews," the Modern Express reporter who talked with the parents told the Global Times. The father called on China's netizens to leave his son alone: "The kid has a good academic record, but is a little introverted. This is too much pressure for him to take."

He vandalized the temple at Luxor.

I don't care if his precious feelings are hurt, I think he should be sent back to Egypt for trial.
Maybe Egypt is really lenient on crimes against their cultural heritage.

Well one thing's for sure, that kid's graffiti will now last longer than anything else he does in life.

When in Egypt, I was fascinated by the Victorian-Era (and once or twice even ancient Greek) graffiti you saw on the temples just because those who wrote them are long gone but their names are still there.  I feel the same when you randomly see it in old caves or what not- I don't think I would ever scrawl my name on anything, but I certainly understand the urge.

I would argue Ancient Egyptian ruins are their archeological heritage. The only cultural heritage in regards to them is selling crappy souvenirs to visitors.

In the same day, the "power of the Internet" allowed bullying by millions, spread countless gossip and rumours, and contributed to the spread of untold malicious misinformation.

But yeah...naming and shaming one 15 year old idiot kid in China, on an international scale, is definitely worth it.

I dunno, I doubt if simply being from China confers some kind of nobility and honor.

His dad had enough money to pay for a family vacation to Egypt or sent the kid there by himself, so my wild guess is this is an arrogant nouveau riche kid.

Or was, perhaps. There might be repercussions if you singlehandedly make China look bad.

He's actually part of a long tradition of such things. Luxor and Karnak temples have graffitti from Napoleonic soldiers, various Egyptian leaders scratched out the faces and names of previous leaders (to "remove" them from history), and christians painted frescoes of saints over heirogyphics. Defacers gonna deface.

I think the worst part is that no one else stopped the kid. I sincerely doubt he was completely alone at a major tourist destination.

You'd give 15-year-olds military weapons and live ammo?

Actually, we need more live targets..sooooooo.

I'm kidding. Actually, my son has been in cadets since he was 13. Best thing he did. He's now in Gr 12, and he's a master warrant officer (DSM). He's at Blackdown (Borden, Ontario) this summer, then taking police foundations at Niagra College. After that he transfers to RMC, Kingston to take the MPO (military police officer) program. He's a good guy, and will make a good cop.
15 year olds could probably benefit from the strict regime and discipline the miltary offers. I'd like to see a conscription program like they have in Switzerland. It would take the kids off the street, give them purpose and pride in this country. That's just me though.

This. I find this appalling, and yes, the child (and the parents - I mean, what the hell, how do you allow your kid to deface such an artifact) should be held accountable, not merely shamed publicly, for this crime.

Sure, and tourism definitely meant something different back then. My grandmother, like other Brits of that era on their European tours, actually brought back a couple of chunks of the Acropolis.

Do you think he's a shiatty driver and owns a dry cleaners as well? Racist stereotypes are stereotypes, even if you think you're praising "them". But hey, at least your narrow-minded, bigoted views gave you a chance to attach your personal prejudices to a kid you have never met and it allowed you to put down American kids as well so it's a win/win for a self-righteous racists that gets to pretend he's better than those around him.

Feel free to take however you want if it makes you feel like you're better than me.

The parents should be pilloried or stockaded for a couple of days, with the kid forced to feed them and wipe their butts.

"An article by Ulrich Haarmann, "Regional Sentiment in Medieval Islamic Egypt," published in the University of London's Bulletin Of The School Of Oriental And African Studies (BSOAS), vol.43 (1980) p.55-66, states that according to Makrizi, Rashidi and other medieval Arab scholars, the face of the Sphinx was vandalized in 1378 A.D. by Mohammed Sa'im al-Dahr, a "fanatical sufi of the oldest and most highly respected sufi convent of Cairo." The nose and ears are mentioned specifically as having been damaged at this time. According to one account, Haarmann states,  the residents in the neighborhood of the Sphinx were so upset by the destruction that they lynched him and buried him near the great monument he ruined."

Yep, lenient.

DeathByGeekSquad: serial_crusher: Internet, good at identifying suspects.

The coverage of that shiat pisses me off.  During the actual chase, when all of the names were being tossed around on the radio, various news publications ran with the stories.  As soon as the names were cleared, they removed most traces from their sites - leaving the social media discussions.  What did those same glorious news publications do the following day?  Write stories about how dangerous social media is for acquiring information, and how the masses should follow respected journalists who vet their information.

Someone on this website actually wrote a book about the media doing this.

It's really a Chinese and Korean thing. See example. Even I worked in both Japan and South Korea for 3 years in total. I've seen more dangerous teenagers in Korea than in Japan. The best thing I like about Japan is that Japanese teenagers at least have dignity. Korean teenagers have arrogance instead.
