In Canada, drug tests by employers are for the most part not allowed, since they can't detect actual on-the-job impairment, only past use. And you mostly can't immediately fire people for drug use since addiction is considered a disability - you need to give the opportunity for rehab, etc.

None of that would stop Ford from agreeing to a hair test, of course - too bad he just got a convenient very short haircut.

Not true.  Lots of employers do drug tests.  Try to work in the fieldwork side of the oil industry and see how far you get without them.  I know a guy in home construction that is getting random ones too.

I am Canadian as well and while some few employers drug test, the large majority don't. Even my friends and relatives who work for the federal government do not get drug tested, neither did I when I worked in a kindergarden or any other job I've ever had. As for your friend, any guy in home construction whos boss does drug testing works for a controlling douchebag.

"Those dicks who had to call in the army to shovel their snow"

/Ottawan

That episode was even more dickish than people realise. We needed the army to shovel the snow (and we actually did need them - we got a shiatload of snow in 2 storms, and ambulances and stuff were immobilised) because the idiots who ran the city sold off a bunch of the equipment, figuring that private contractors would buy it and could be hired to supplement the reduced city crews. Instead, the equipment was bought by more sensible cities that understood that winter is coming. Also, they decided to save money by only having the crews on call from December 1 instead of November 15, and the first storm hit at the end of November. It hadn't been cleaned up yet when we got the second one.

And yet that crew, which apparently forgot that it snows in Canada, look like geniuses compared with the current administration. And somehow 36% of the public still supports the mayor. I'm not sure if that changes even if the tape shows up. I'd start thinking about moving back to my hometown of Montreal, but at least in Toronto we can drink the water.

MadSkillz: So if he just makes a bunch of poor decisions and all but farks your city but commits no crimes, he cannot be recalled? haha

You know it is funny. I am not a Ford supporter as he is a complete PR moron but, from the standpoint of what he has done as mayor, I do not think his supporters are overly unhappy.

Keep in mind all of the following does not include the smoking crack incident as it is nothing more than unsupported hearsay at this point.

He has not been able to trim the budgets as much as he promised but he is trying to make good on the promise. He had success with the garbage privatization. And he fought like hell for the subway line ... but eventually lost that fight.

Most of his offenses are pretty minor considering he is a mayor of a major city: misappropriation of funds? $1500 to charity - not millions to his own pocket. Not paying attention while driving? Yeah the evil bastard was doing work and doesn't like wasting city funds on a driver. All the rest are pretty minor as well ... most of which stem from the fact that he is a grade A asshole. But they are not impeachable offenses.

People need to understand that when the majority of people vote someone in then you don't get to oust them just because you don't like him (yes I may be talking about other politicians here as well). They serve out their term and then you get to try to get your candidate in next round.

Farking Canuck: MadSkillz: Doesn't Toronto have any sort of Recall mechanism?

You cannot recall someone based on claims of a video that might have shown something.

There is this concept of innocent until proven guilty that we like to hold on to.

dywed88: He has done exactly what those who voted for him wanted. Large and broad budget cuts and preventing any additional funding for Transit. And generally not doing very much.

Just because you have a different opinion as to his job than the people who voted for him doesn't mean he isn't doing his job.

Uh, he hasn't cut the budget even a little bit. He promised $2B in cuts by 2013. The 2010 budget was $9.2B. The proposed 2013 budget is $9.4B.

But you're right about him generally not doing very much. While being paid with your tax dollars!

Marion Barry was able to play the race card. Not kidding. He cried persecution for his race. Not being a racist POS either because I twice voted for Obama, but I also lived in the DC area before moving to Canada. There is a huge difference between Ford and Berry. Barry was slick. Ford is a buffoon.

You sound just as sure as I am that there is no tape.

I think that they may have faked it and a couple of idiots who call themselves reporters saw a glimpse of it and bought the story hook line and sinker.
then the globe and mail comes up with an article making all sorts of allegations about the family based on nothing but anonymous sources who won't go on the record about stuff that happened back in the 80's

this could be another Swiftboat. All smoke and mirrors with but tall tales from people who are sketchy to say the least.

I'd say we've found Doug's fark account, but he'd have far more profanity in his response.

$197,910 now, so it's gonna be raised, no matter what.

My guess: the video will quietly change hands along with Gawker's money, the money will go to charity because "they can't find the guy", and then they'll magically "find" the video a few days later to avoid extortion and PR issues. Toronto gets the video, charity gets the money, Gawker looks less like they're paying drug dealers for dirt, the end.

ruta: Lego_Addict: shortymac: FuzedBox: Bonanza Jellybean: base935: Why not just force this public servant to a "drug test with suspicion"?

Mandatory drug tests are only for wage slaves and welfare recipients, not public servants, silly.

Not just that, cocaine only stays in one's system between one to three days, up to maybe five if abused constantly. Drug testing the mayor at this point would be completely pointless.

I suspect it's one of the reasons why he waited a week before saying ANYTHING about the video.

As long as he stays clean his drug test will come up negative. Only pot can be detected for longer than a week do to it being fat-based.

He was never going to submit to a drug test.

I have no doubt in my mind that the tape is real and he's in it. Just look at his track record and of his siblings.

The Globe and Mail article mentioned above is a great read. The four siblings are messed up.  Domestic abuse, murder, kidnapping, drug dealing and white supremacists? That is awesome on so many levels.

Unfortunately for Toronto and everyone trying to get real work done at city hall, they are stuck with Rob Ford and his family circus no matter how kooky the circus gets, and it sounds like Rob Ford himself wasn't directly involved in the antics of his siblings. Unless it turns out that Rob Ford murdered a guy, I don't think there's any way to get him out of office. There's no way he'll resign.

The Rob Ford show will continue until he decides it's over, unfortunately. He wants the title of Mayor, but not the responsability of being Mayor. His brother wants to run the City, but has the charisma of a pair of fetid dingo's kidneys.

I think the councilors will find a way to work around Ford, they've been doing it for almost a year now as it is. Maybe they can carry on better if he's stays at home sulking or hiding from the press.

Apparently it depends on the test.

Unfortunately for us, Ford went from longish hair in April to getting a buzz cut just around the time of this coming out...  Completely coincidental I'm sure, but it does mean you can't do any hair tests.

However, from reading a few things here and there, while coke only stays for a few days it does cause the doomathingy levels to go (up/down) which can be detected up to 6 or 8 weeks after consumption if it's a chronic user.

I still don't understand why people would donate money to a successful media company for a video of a Mayor doing drugs. I guess this will be standard procedure now, to crowdfund things rich companies don't want to pay for themselves. PT Barnum would have been happy to witness this whole thing.
