Kawasaki was a good source of entertainment on a Mariners team that didn't have much else to offer last year. Glad to see him doing well in Canuckistan.

Yeah.  The Marlins sucked last year, so acquiring all the Marlins wasn't exactly brilliant.

Actually, it was brilliant for the Marlins.  Cleared a lot of payroll they didn't need.  Of course, they're not looking to spend that money more wisely since Loria is a scammer, but oh well.

This times a million.

The Ninja should play second once Reyes gets back.

As for "what about Bonifacio", well, what about him?

He of the .240 OBP and .207 BA?

As for defensively, I think they could be fairly comparable, and he did a decent job covering 2B in a handful of games last season.

Give me the guy who has a higher OB by a significant margin at the bottom of a lineup, works the count and provides decent defense vs. someone who can't hit, strikes out too much, can't work a walk, and may not offer much of an upgrade defensively any day of the week, and twice on Sundays (now renamed Kawasakidays).

I think we should be careful not to get caught up in Kawasaki madness. While I don't disagree he deserves his chance, you can't hand him the reigns just yet. Bonifacio has far better numbers than his start to this season (Jays are starting to hit and his numbers will reflect that like everyone else's).

I think Kaw will become what they hoped Izturis would be. Bon will sit a lot in favor of Kaw...but will still be considered the "starter". Also when he returns, Reyes will probably end up DH a few times a week to TRY and keep him of the DL.

I think some people are just destined to be on the DL this year. Curtis Granderson wasn't even back two weeks before he had his OTHER hand broken by another HBP.

Well then what do you do with encarnacion? The dh is pretty much taken and second base is really the only open spot right now.

1B split with Lind. Unless Lind plays his way out again. You just plan it to have Reyes DH against lefties when you will probably have Lind on the bench anyway. It's going to be a merry-go-round for a while anyway. But you're obviously getting Edwin in there as much as you can. I think the DH spot will become the rest spot for a lot of Jays. The good thing the Jays have are a few guys who can move around the field without losing too much.

I just don't think Bonifacio is as good as Kawasaki. He's better than Izturis, but still pretty bad at the plate and on D. He's a better baserunner than Izturis, but not better than Kawasaki. I see no burning reason to start him.
I'm not saying Kawasaki is an all-star. But he gets on base, runs well, and plays good D. He probably rates out as a slightly below average MLB shortstop. Bonifacio is slightly worse, and Izturis is a trainwreck on fire.
If you go in for advanced stats, Kawasaki's WAR so far, Bonifacio's is -0.6, Izturis' is -1.1. He's the third worst player in the majors by that measure. Bonifacio is 12th worst. Kawasaki is near the middle of the pack, 158th of 261 players with 100 plate appearances. Small sample size and all that, but I think it's safe to say he's better than Izturis and certainly not worse than Bonifacio

I agree. I just don't think the Jays will abandon Bonifacio yet is all. I have a feeling Kawasaki will be a streaky player. Great for 4-5 games....then terrible for a few weeks. At the plate, I mean...his glove is probably better than the other 2. Crazy that Izturis what signed for his glove.

Yeah, really. There must be some kind of aura around Rogers Centre that causes second basemen to suck. Aaron Hill was awful his last couple years (granted, the concussion didn't help) and started being awesome again as soon as he left. Kelly Johnson slumped on offence and defence the whole time he was in Toronto, and is now playing great in Tampa. Now Izturis is the same. He was never going to be great, but no one expected this.

You're right, they won't give up on Bonifacio yet, but I think Kawasaki deserves to at least be platooned to hit righties with him, and if he's still clearly better by the all star break own the starting job

No...that was in Skydome. ;-)

Although Skydome had way tougher turf than Rogers Center.

LoR75:

I meant more last 5 seasons or so. Robbie Alomar could probably walk into the clubhouse tonight, fat an 100 years old, and outplay Maicer. Whoever has held down 2b over the last 5 years in Toronto has sucked hard while there, and the two guys who left rebounded in a big way the next season.

This.

I remember playing on it for a bit during one season when I worked at the SkyDome in my mid teens.  That stuff was essentially concrete with a thin green carpet over it.  The ball would roll non stop.

The stuff now is much more "spongier" and way more forgiving.  I haven't played on it, but I've walked on it numerous times and it's night and day compared to the quarter-inch thick carpet from the early 90s

No, even I don't remember that, and I've lived in Toronto my entire life.  If anyone will remember, and if you are on Twitter, ask Tao of Stieb.  He remembers such random things (such as the name of the "ice...cold...beeeeeer" guy) and why he was fired, and is pretty good about the heyday of the SkyDome.  Actually, I'll ask him now because this is bugging me.

I will always remember "catch de taste" for as long as I live though.  One of the most unintentionally hilarious commercials of all time.

Which kind of makes it that much more amazing that Alomar did what he did there. I mean, sure you get a truer hop on the old stuff but some of the balls he got to were barely short of impossible.
