I thoroughly enjoyed the Super Mario Bros / September 11th conspiracy theory that popped up on IMDB. It was more entertaining than  the movie, that's for sure.

2013-05-27 01:05:45 AM
I never would have heard of John Leguizamo were it not for that movie. It was cheesy and horrible and an icon whether we like it or not.

2013-05-27 01:08:10 AM
How can the headline simply not refer to Leguizamo by name? I feel like everyone should know he played Luigi in that movie.

Well. I guess it's finally time to admit I'm getting old.

2013-05-27 01:10:30 AM
That film was shot in the abandoned Ideal Cement Factory here in Wilmington NC.  We've used it for just about every show filmed here.  Most recently in the NBC show "Revolution."

Probably one of the worst places i've ever been.  Someone gets hurt every time we shoot there.

2013-05-27 01:11:46 AM
That movie might have been fun in a hallucinogenic way if it wasn't so damn boring.

2013-05-27 01:16:21 AM
The guy who played Luigi? You mean John Leguizamo  subby? Really dude?

2013-05-27 01:17:36 AM
I recently watched this "movie" with some coworkers during lunch. The guy who brought it kept insisting it was a great movie, while I kept telling him otherwise. Then again there are also people who think Star Trek Into Darkness, Fast and the Furious 6, and Battleship are great movies.

Speaking of which, I would rather watch Mario Brothers over Battleship if I had to choose. Battleship made my head hurt. At least Mario Brothers is campy and unintentionally funny.

2013-05-27 01:18:48 AM
I was 12 when it came out, and I remember that my friends and I liked it. I thought it was cool to have the Mushroom Kingdom reimagined as a gritty, grimy place. I thought Dennis Hopper was awesome and that Princess Daisy was totally hot. Also, it was before Leguizamo became totally annoying in everything.

Why is movie in quotations? Did you just bring in a box that you wrote "Super Mario Bros." on and throw it in front of a screen?

Dennis Hopper is dead??

Exactly, and it was more entertaining than actually watching Super Mario Brothers.

I thought this was going to be about Luigi from the the television show and was very disappointed.

/remembers the show where Luigi joked about getting Nicole Eggert (in her pre-implant Baywatch prime) out of her clothes

2013-05-27 01:57:55 AM
Ok, I haven't seen it since it came out, but I remember enjoying it.  It wasn't a great film, but fun.  And I was 15...

I'll rewatch the first Ninja Turtles movie again.  At least that holds up.

2013-05-27 02:13:34 AM
I saw this one in theaters with my brothers and I even remember the car ride over to the theater. I was really excited for this movie.

As a child, I thoroughly enjoyed it and really wanted a sequel based on the ending. Looking back, it's really not so terrible, but it is far from a great movie. It will always have a special place in my heart.

2013-05-27 02:21:26 AM
Scariest movie I've ever seen.  Once Mojo Nixon devolves into a goombah, my eight-year-old ass was like, "OK, I've split from the farm here."

Saw it again when I was older and as bad as it is, there is a certain early-90s sugar-rush charm to it.

Foxxinnia: The guy who played Luigi? You mean John Leguizamo  subby? Really dude?

Yeah, I can't stand the guy, but he has name recognition.  At first I thought the headline was a reference to the TV show with Captain Lou Albano.

He has some annoying comedy, but his drama and action roles are pretty good and his standup is actually quite funny.  Also, the Violator was great.

And thus began a long line of films having absolutely nothing whatesoever to do with the game.

2013-05-27 03:16:09 AM
Is subby trolling in the headline? Because he might be annoying, but Leguizamo's had a legit 30-year career in film and TV and is still going...

/thinks maaayybe been trolled.

This.
How long has it been since The Wizard? Cause that's sure to make me cry. Oh, I just looked. 24 years. Farkin' hell. I can't believe my Nintendo Power Glove (tm) is older than the women I date.

Came here to say something like that. Leguizamo has proven himself to be a true talent, but in Subby and Kotaku's world apparently he's just a washed-up schmoe whose career highlight was playing an 8-bit video game plumber.

This "little" video (runs for almost 30 mins.) made me re-evaluate my opinion of the film. The movie is still kind of campy and not very Mario Bros. in nature, but there was effort placed into it and they did include videogame references. And I'd love to read a full takedown of the drama behind the scenes.

I recommend this critic's videos. He does bring a new perspective to much-maligned and some obscure titles, and loves what he does. His choice of never appearing on-camera does wonders for his arguments too.

She was hotter when she was topless in Pump Up the Volume.

Long enough to where the girl from the wizard has had a successful music career

He's already talked about how much they all disliked that movie:

It's an interesting read.

Anyone who does not know John Leguizamo was Luigi is no friend of mine.

I'm only 32 and I've been getting that feeling a lot lately.  I refuse to admit it though.

The thing is neither movie > video game, nor video game > movie works because they're always viewed as a cheap cash-in.

What might change things is when you get the gamer generation becoming directors. That's what happened with comics - Branagh read Thor as a boy, Singer read X-Men as a boy. They made films that gave a shiat about what they were doing. Maybe Duncan Jones' film of Warcraft will work. He's into his gaming.

While it did begin a huge and unhealthy crush on Seth Green that lives to this day, it is so very 90's it hurts to look at the poster... let alone remember the movie.
