some_beer_drinker: why does this happen?

Sweet little old lady sees cats outside, brings them in, feeds them, can't afford or doesn't think to neuter them.  Kittens ensue.

To be fair (though this is still an overall bad situation), that one cat in the picture does appear to be in pretty good shape.

Problem-o solved-o.

Of course, if the neurotic felines take to pissing outside the box, you gotta get the CSI UV lamp to find the spots and clean them up.

Was she hoarding cat feces?

reminds me of my friend's neighbour,

in that house, they took out 180 cats, they were in the walls, ceiling etc. There wasn't a single horizontal surface that wasnt an inch thick in filth. The cats had to be put down from respiratory issues breathing in too much ammonia.  We thought he was just a weird guy with a couple of cats. turned out he was batshiat crazy with over a hundred cats in a tiny house.

poor kittehs....  :(

Cats are invader, mind-controlling space monsters.  They sink pscyhoplasmic tentacles into weak human brains and take control of them.

wood pellets also work really well. for some reason they don't really smell bad, just kind of piny, no smell of ammonia.  They are dirt cheap so you can just dump the box whenever and refill.  Sometimes its tricky getting the cats trained to use them if they are used to normal litter but the pellets are so much superior to normal litter.

When I was about 13 I went to a friend's aunt's house that had at least 100 cats in it. You could smell the stank from the sidewalk. Once we got inside, you could barely breathe from the smell. There were cats EVERYWHERE. They were crawling all over the tables and counters in the kitchen. It was the saddest and most disgusting place I have ever visited.

How many litter boxes does she have?  With three cats I certainly hope that it is not just one.  With three cats you need at least two, ideally you should have one per cat.

Ok, 51 cats is definitely too many for a one room apartment.  I have to wonder why they were taken away, though?  As per the article, they were being fed and watered, and there was no animal abuse.

I mean, I'm just curious... where is the limit?  What is the cat per square foot equation?

Some people just don't understand the responsibilities of taking care of cats. There are a lot of duties. You can't just dump the duties onto others.

I'm kind of curious if she lives in an apartment, did other neighbors not hear any sounds or smell anything unusual? It's hard to cover-up 51 cats in an apartment I would think.

And the box should be sized to the cat. I can't believe how small litter boxes are. My two cats are both gibs, fixed tomcats. They're pretty big, 15 pounds each and not much fat. They barely fit diagonally in standard litter boxes. I just got a Rubbermaid laundry basket and cut it down to size. Now they can go in there and make their piles of hate with plenty of room to scratch.

One of them has this mental issue where he needs to paw at the box for about five minutes while looking in my direction. If he did that with standard boxes there would be hills of litter outside in no time.

I have one cat and live in a 1 BR apartment.  No issues with odor, but I need to clean his litter about every three days and I change it out once every two weeks (arm and hammer litter). Typing that out makes me think that once a week would be better, but at $12 per box of litter, that is a bit expensive to do weekly.

He really loads that box up and I can't imagine more than one cat sharing it.  I think each cat should have its own litter box, especially in an apartment situation.

The only smell issues that are a bummer about sharing a 1 BR with a cat is when he lays a fresh duke, before the smell dissipates.  Goddamn cat shiat is stinky.  And in a small living space there is no escape - you gotta ride it out.

Ideally there should be one per cat, plus a spare, and the size can definitely be an issue. Not that they don't miss sometimes, anyway. It's not like they don't know where to go.

My mom's torti prefers to pee on rags. She's a sweet, intelligent cat, don't get me wrong, but she has a couple of screws loose. Instead of discouraging her from peeing on old towels, Mom put rags in a litter box. It worked quite well. Everyone won, except whoever gets to change the pee rags.
