(Washington Post)   National media rips RGIII for having the audacity to create a wedding registry, and fans for 'foolishly' buying things off said registry. Let's see what the media does with this: RGIII and his fiancee are sending hand-written thank you notes   (washingtonpost.com) divider line 58

The kid sounds like...well, a semi-normal and almost nice person.

*gasp

Hey national media: just who, pray tell, gave attention to RGIII's wedding registry in the first place?

2013-05-26 02:49:03 PM
I'm a huge RGIII fan but I get a sulking feeling in my stomach that some PR junkie dreamed this up.

1) Register at BB&B in your own name even though you're a huge celebrity (and you could've just as easily registered with another name and let actual guests know)
2) Have someone post something on ExtremeSkins about finding your registry.
3) Get some kudos for being a normal wholesome guy for getting married at 23 when you could be tagging everything in DC
4) Get even more kudos for writing thank you cards to people who, for whatever reason, bought you stuff off your registry.

This doesn't change my opinion of RG3 for the better or the worse, but I just feel like something is very off about this whole thing.

What could well be 'off' is how far off the 'norm' he is for an NFL athlete of his caliber. I don't know him from a hole in the wall personally, but it seems to me like the MSM seem to be DYING to find something to which they can trumpet to the rafters that's he's JaMarcus2.0, but the more they dig, the more they're finding he's ... well, effectively just a normal guy, and a nice one at that.

Maybe?

2013-05-26 02:54:03 PM
When can we stop calling him RG3, national media?

And don't say "never". We know you get tired of dreamy quarterbacks after a while.

It's just as possible that he naively thought, "What's the harm?  Who's going to look for my wedding registry, and if they find it what's the worst that can happen?"

So what kind of stupid shiat do you register for when you're an NFL QB?

Sheets? Towels? Fondue set? I mean when I got married I registered for a lot of shiat that was too expensive for a newlywed couple...appliances, knives, some all clad pans. But when you can afford to buy whatever you want what do you register for?

/also you're kind of a loser if you buy a pro football player a wedding gift...he's not going to sleep with you just because you bought him some sheets

Since when?  Last season the media was all over his jock, probably because he's somewhat of an anti-Jamarcus.  Military family, straight-laced, Republican etc etc. They love this dude.  He's about as vanilla as they come.

Yea, that was what that blithering imbecile Stephen A Smith got a vacation from working at ESPN for. He found out and said that RG3 wasn't black enough cause he was marryin' a white girl.

No, really. Look it up.

Sure, it's a free country and people can do whatever they want with their money, but seeing a random person buying RG3 wedding presents seems very creepy to me. I think I read that he gave some of the presents to charity, so that's cool on his part.

Yeah, an NFL QB creating a public wedding registry is a bit dorky, but where's the harm exactly? RGIII's fans get "bilked" way more by the NFL buying his jersey and other related merchandise compared to "hey bud, here's the $40 fondue maker you asked for. GO SKINS".

I guess we're just going to pretend that he was ripped for it, even though there was just about no commentary on the fact that it existed. Maybe about the patheticness of Redskins fans for buying stuff...but yeah, there wasn't a whole lot of media outrage.

I guess it was "outrage" like Tebow was "overrated" - people don't actually pay attention to what gets said, just that the story exists and then they make up what it was about.

I figure for them it's less about getting the stuff and more about giving an opportunity for their friends and family to make a gesture that says "hey, we love you and want you to get your marriage started off right."  Of course they don't need the stuff; it's the thought that counts.

I could see it being a bit tacky if they registered at Lord & Taylor for silver dinner services, Wedgwood china, and Baccarat crystal glassware, but they didn't.  Bed Bath & Beyond isn't Dollar Tree, but it surely isn't Harrod's, either.

I have nothing but good things to say about RGIII. He's in that "good guy" class of QBs from everything I've seen, and pretty damned intelligent (throw him in the mix with Rodgers, Russell Wilson, and a few others who'd have had many opportunities outside of playing football open to them).

So if he's responding with hand-written thanks to people for stuff he may end up donating to charity anyway, that's pretty cool IMHO.

Warthog: See here for a write-up of Stephen A. Smith's screed.

So this is ripping RG3:

Greenberg: "My unsolicited advice to RGIII is, enjoy the gifts and pay no attention to, as you call them, the Debbie Downers."
Smith:   "I don't think the fans are the problem here. You know who I think the problem is? His fiancee is the problem.2It's her fault." (while blaming someone, it isn't RGIII)

All of the quotes save one in the second article condemned dipsh*t fans, not RGIII.

Once again, there never was any case of national media ripping RGIII, just like having talking heads on ESPN discuss how sh*tty Tebow is constantly or, even when he was successful, giving the "praise" of "I don't know how the hell he's doing it, but they ARE winning," is apparently constantly talking about how great he is.

Claiming Twitter quotes count is like saying Fark threads are a representation of the national media. No.
