(Talking Points Memo)   Arizona Governor Jan Brewer tells the GOP to expand Medicaid or she'll start vetoing legislation. And she's already started to make good on her threat. Man, those democrats don't--wait, she's republican?   (livewire.talkingpointsmemo.com) divider line 63

She's been making comments that she is eligible to run for re-election in 2014 despite the Arizona State Constitution prohibiting her from doing so. She's been trying to ramp up a re-election campaign.

Republicans are no less willing to take federal dollars.  They just have to piss and moan about it for a little while first.

It's a pretty good deal for the states, the federal government pays for almost all of it.  You really have to hate the fark out of poors to hate Obamacare.

She doesn't want the population of Sedona, average age 115, protesting. Those geezers make quite a mess.

Medicare has to be a HUGE source of  business income in that state.

The iconic part is that she drastically cut funding for healthcare in Arizona. It has hurt the hospitals in the state.

Tons of people are now without healthcare which the hospitals eat the cost, due to the massive cuts.

Now, she is for expanding it.

Sedona is mostly old hippies pushing 70. The really old farts are in Sun City, Sun City West, and Green Valley (south of Tucson).

I'm impressed she's smart enough to see the train barreling down the tracks.  It's one thing to be against giving the states extra money to expand Medicaid, but once you've lost the battle and the decision is made to give the money, you have to be a complete idiot not to take it.

I am so looking forward to Jan 2014 when the law kicks in and millions of people in red states realize that their Republican government is withholding health insurance benefits that most other states are getting.  And the only motivation for doing this is a butthurt hissy fit because they lost the fight over Obamacare.  That is going to be fun to watch.

Mark my words - Republicans are going to HATE that this bill is called "Obamacare" in just a few years.   It will hang over them like Social Security did for Republicans in the 40's and 50's, except if everyone called Social Security "Rooseveltcare".

Marcus Aurelius: It appears that she actually gives a crap about the poor old people in her state.  Shocking.

And Arizona has a lot of them. They probably put pressure on the Sea Hag (along with medical equipment manufacturers, hospitals, and all kinds of other business interests who stand to lose big) to go with this.

Guys, a lot of you are talking about Medicare, but she's talking about an expansion of Medicaid, health coverage for poor people, not the elderly.

I'll rephrase: Federal spending on health care has to be a major source of business income in Arizona and Florida. Those businesses don't want any of those sweet, sweet tax dollars escaping.

To bad it's too late for these people, who died after benefits for the poorest were cut by Brewer..Patients die waiting for heart transplants after services cut.

I think you mean Medicaid. Normally I don't care, but her record until now suggests otherwise so Im wondering if this process of Medicaid expansion may not occur as we think it might. Of course, it seems like a fairly straightforward process, so we shall see.

Her son is a psychiatric patient at the state hospital. I think she probably knows these sort of things need funding and Obamacare is a good deal.

The term I've seen referred to Brewer (who as far as I recalled the right absolutely adored) ever since she took a stand here as been "brewercrat" and "brewercrats" for those in the GOP that are on her side.

When an entire party is so partisan that it's literally with us or against us on every single issue I don't think there's much hope. There's no way it's been like this in the past without a major shift amongst the parties or the rise of a new party.

past the Supreme Court this summer or you are in big, big trouble.

I actually expected her blatant contempt for everything POTUS stands for would trump sound policy implementation. She's proven me wrong. This time.

On the one hand, good on making a stand for expanded health care.

On the other hand, fark holding unrelated legislation hostage to get your way.  It's stupid regardless of if it's related to the debt ceiling or health care.

you don't have to hate the poor, you just have to not care about people in general.  The only reason to resist the medicaid expansion is that you want Obamacare to fail.  The GOP needs it to fail, and they're doing everything they can to reduce its effectiveness.  What other reason can there be to oppose the exchanges?

The republicans are simply using the same strategy they've been using with the economy, they do everything they can to damage it.

Jan Brewer must believe she can win another term somehow.

The last Brewer veto that stood out for me was a federal gun law nullification bill. She might, possibly, be more deep than derp.

/Interesting...go on...

Good on Brewer for letting AZ legislators know she's serious about getting the medicaid expansion put in place.

OMG, I just said something nice about Jan Brewer.

/So very confused now.

Probably a bunch of medical equipment lobbyists slipped her a whole lot of cash. That is pretty much how she operates.

I don't care, however. If she needs a giant bag of unmarked bills to do the right thing, then fark it, at least she's doing the right thing for once in her miserable life.

As a resident of Arizona, and constantly being disgusted with our governor during election cycles, I can say that I have been pleasantly surprised with this. She is standing up to pressure from the 'Big Right', and holding to her threats. She even vetoed a bill allowing people to sue over violations of religious freedoms.

Now, I'm all for religious freedoms, but we know that it's a republican talking point bill, and completely useless.

Go Brewer Go, just please hold true to this threat.

Curious: few time i with we

wish we. that small print is hard to proofread.

as far as republican governors trying to quash the ACA by hurting their populations, yeah there is that too. and it will back fire on them. bobby has had his hope for 2016 crumble and this isn't helping him.

if the republicans had been smart they would have encouraged going to court but once the SCOTUS ruled they should have dropped it. turned to their constituents shrugged, said oops too bad time to move on. all that repeated repeal shiat in the house especially this last time just makes them look super partisan and stupid. which may help joe tea party guy but hurts nationally.

now if the republican party as now constituted collapse tomorrow and faded away next week i wouldn't be unhappy. that said it's time to get back to business, raise the debt ceiling and the other things we all know have to be done. then we can fight about immigration and do we really need the osprey and another tank.

I'd like to think Brewer is doing this out of an attack of common sense and/or human decency, but looking back on her history I'd bet she's only doing it because some medical lobby group is bribing her BIG time.

Granted I have just about as much admiration for Bonefinger as I do any other James Bond villain. . .but for Cthulu's sake, Democrats.  A Republican is defending your plan better than you are.  Show some stones, drop some nukes in the Senate, and tell those religious whackjobs we don't give a damn what your sky fairy told you about eggs: the law's the law.  Say a few hail marys for your soul, or write out a few checks for fines.  The choice is theirs.
