This was such a big deal that they showed it on the Jumbotron at Skydome in Toronto. Still can't believe I watched the finale with 40000 other people.

I was in boot camp when it aired. Had to catch it in reruns like two years later, all by my lonesome.

It was a great series, reaching 20+ million a week at its peak.

// Can't tell if the news about the Irish language reboot of Cheers, Teach Seán ,was serious or just somebody pulling our legs.

// Who would have guessed that Woody Harrelson would be the most successful of the Cheers alumni?

I just recently found out ted danson wore a rug that whole time. I recently watched a couple of seasons, never realized until somebody who watched the show originally told me

I lived through the 90's myself, but I still want to ask; are we just being wistfully nostalgic for the 90's, or were the 90's truly the last decade when we had anything awesome and everything instantly turned to sh*t the moment GW Bush seized power? To be honest imo the 00's really were a dogshiat decade that I would love to forget.

Great show, recently watched Frasier & Cheers from beginning to end a couple of months ago. As for where I was 20 years ago. Still in elementary school, grew up watching it with my folks.

Was on its way to shiat even before that. But as far as television comedy goes: blame Seinfeld. Before Seinfeld for a comedy to be good, it had to be smart and clever. Seinfeld was the turning point because while it was smart and clever, it was also a 'show about nothing'. Every show after that is a Seinfeld rip-off -- shows about nothing but minus the cleverness. Just a lot of inanities delivered as if they're oh-so-ironic. Blame the Internet, too: there's a whole generation of people who think comedy is just how many 'references' you can cram in. What they don't realize is that this isn't comedy -- it's just your brain being totally rewired to be a reflection of the World Wide Web.

He takes it off in front of Rhea Perlman(Carla) who had no idea that he wore a rug.

/Her reaction in that scene is hilarious!

I never saw more than a scene or two of that show.  In 1993 I was 11, my age group had friends instead.

"Well ya see, Norm, it's like this... A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members. In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, as we know, kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers."

they show old cheers reruns at one in the morning on some channel (tbs maybe?) and i work third shift so we've been watching it during lunch break for the past few months.  i was like 11 years old when the show was cancelled so i barely remember it at all.  but even for a show that's 20 years old, it does not feel dated at all, except for the fashion and some of the outdated technology like the bar's phone.  but the humor isn't dated at all, it's almost timeless how the characters acted and how they wrote the jokes.  i'm seeing it basically for the first time and it's really a great show even all these years later.  and i don't even like most network comedy sitcoms.

I was a hair too young to take full advantage of the show (was around 13 when the finale aired)...looking back it ages quite well, and some of the lines I remember in this comments section still get a chuckle out of me.  Great show.

I remember that. He and Rebecca are in his office, and he's trying to reassure her about something, and lifts his wig up to prove the point. I think he only had it during the later seasons, although I can't say for sure.
