Going in to make a pot now. Don't worry, I measure carefully.

Sooo. How many oz. in these cups the Aussie researchers used?

2013-05-26 09:39:12 AM
That would be no coffee. No wait, it kills others when I have no coffee. Nevermind.

In other news, you can still have too much of anything in your system.

Falling asleep at work could kill me more.

Relatively Obscure: Falling asleep at work could kill me more.

I know "kill me more" was a bad choice of words.  I haven't had my coffee.

This is just one study right?

Is this where I say until more proof that correlation yada yada causation?

They don't use ounces in Austria.

Hrm, I wonder if it's the same for both hot and cold brewed coffees?

I know cold-brewing coffee can get you more caffine but less of the acids dissolve/are leeched out. I wonder if this is one of the acids that doesn't get leeched from the grounds.

Dear medical community:

There's this thing called "moderation".  Believe it or not, the vast majority of people in the world practice it in most consumption-related circumstances. Please stop trying to scare us, because when you do things like this, it makes us ignore you when you actually have a valid warning.

Also, if you farkers cause the US to tax coffee at a higher rate to "protect coffee addicts", I'm gonna go all Liam Neeson on you. You don't want to see me without my caffeine.

You are mistaken if you think the medical community is trying to scare you.  address you concerns to the media who hype everything and need 24 hours of stories to keep their channels running instead.

I could maybe do 3 cups of coffee in a day. 5 might cause my heart to burst.

I couldn't really do this anymore, but once upon a time the late-night diner used to just set the entire pot at my table.

I know.  That's why I asked, so it would translate into an amount that makes sense to me.

That'd be relevant if TFA was talking about caffeine.

Maybe you need a cup of coffee to perk you up enough to read :P

I can't wait until we can force people to sleep for 8 hours a day. Then we can really start saving lives.

2013-05-26 11:52:04 AM
If you're drinking five times the amount of coffee that normal people drink in a day, you're probably also eating five times as much food.  There's your connection to obesity.

So, we talking 5 cups or "cups" (i.e. a pot is 12 cups)?

The researchers found that mice given an equivalent dose of five cups of coffee for a human developed twice the amount of visceral fat - the most dangerous form of fat that collects around the organs in the abdomen.

Guess I'll have to cut back to 4 cups then.

The key is *six* cups of coffee.

I'm willing to bet that people who drink 6 cups of coffee a day are just likely to die as everyone else.

You gotta die from something.

2013-05-26 12:48:19 PM
studies show that you shouldn't publicize studies based on mice, as they might not be valid for a different species, say humans.
Really now.. this kind of grandstanding is not good for real science.

Yet there is still a certain amount of ounces of coffee that can be put in the cup the Austrian used.

But slamming back 20 Red Bulls a day is still fine, right?

2013-05-26 03:09:31 PM
"Poison is in everything, and no thing is without poison. The dosage makes it either a poison or a remedy." - Paracelsus

Also, "all things in moderation" includes moderation itself. Sometimes you just gotta binge.

Mega Steve: But slamming back 20 Red Bulls a day is still fine, right?

No. The only thing that is safe is pharmaceutical stimulants like dextro-amphetamines, say perhaps like those found in Adderall or Dexedrine. Given to school children, college kids, stay at home mothers, well, just about anyone who has heard of it will have taken it if they can. Government approves and so does your doctor, so it must be safe, right? But caffeine and b-vitamins? No, that's a potentially deadly, ill-advised approach to staying alert and focused.

The My Little Pony Killer: If you're drinking five times the amount of coffee that normal people drink in a day, you're probably also eating five times as much food.  There's your connection to obesity.

That is actually the opposite of "probably," as coffee makes a wonderful food surrogate. It's got the calories of water and the flavor to trick your body into thinking you ate.
