Am I missing something? Isn't it a basic melon with just an etching of the character? How is that raising the prices and why can't everyone just do it themselves in their shops?

Japan has a melon-fetish. Apparantly growing melons is seen as a form of art, and even regular melons are ridiculously expensive. Melons from certain areas easily go for that price without HelloKitty on them It's one of the most expensive, luxury fruits you can get in Japan for some reason.

Hmmmmm, I wonder if I could start importing black market melons and make a shilling.

Due to limited growing space?

I heard they're going to introduce a new "Hello Kitty" character etched onto the same fruit; a medium-sized dog.with a sad but sweet longing for the way things used to be.
"Melon-collie" hits the shelves next week.

Yeah, I went over to the linked site wondering if that was a typo, but it really is 4,980.  As far as musk melons go in Japan, that's dirt cheap.

I wonder if it is like wine where 90% of people can't tell the difference between a $8 melon and a $200 one. If so.. New business opportunity?

When I was in college, we had a group of Japanese exchange students staying with us for a year.  The first time we took them to the cafeteria, they saw there was one of those diced melon mixes on the salad bar.  They all stared at it wide-eyed and wondered, "Are we allowed to have that?"  It was kind of adorable.

I had not heard of a muskmelon before so I looked it up... It's just a cantaloupe? Really? Yeah, why am I not importing them into Japan???

Niice. I had that as my background for quite some time. Can't remember where it showed up first (p-shop contest, I'll guess).

As for the comments about the ridiculous prices of melons.  Giving a $100 piece of fruit in Japan is less about the "quality" of the fruit (though to be sure, it will be very round and fresh) and more about the fact that the person who receives the melon will know you spent $100 on it.

No, more due to the weird perfection they achieve.

There's also the concept of "gift melons" in Japan, which I don't even think I can begin to explain.

Or you could divide by 100 like normal people and just take the rough estimate.

I was in Japan about a year ago. Melons were selling for the equivalent of about $100 a pop. It was surreal.

I had to ... study it out... as the new saying goes... and yes... it appears to be about the Japanese tradition of fealty. no one in japan is paying $100+ for a friggen cantaloupe for themselves.. it's all about the giving of the melon to someone for whatever reason, be it kissing the ass of a buisness associate, or kissing anyone elses ass. I like how it was put up earlier, it aint about the $100 melon, it's that you spent $100 on a melon.
and it would appear that the folks growing the melons have caught on and have learned that if you Bonzai the fark out of those farkers, or at least make the illusion that you are, then you can charge even more for that melon, and hence.... there for.. airgo., an even bigger kiss ass maneuver...

a pair of melons apparently recent sold at charity auction over there for some $25.000.

that these hello kitty branded melons.. are really low hanging, cheap, fruit in comparison of some of the prices that have been floated around out there for these things... a bauble if you will.. as most hello kitty stuff is..

I would like to know more how the image is imprinted into the melon.. I assume some kind of laser etching to induce favorable scarring.. I know the square melons are made by restricting and forming the growth with a mold.

Although Harry_Seldon seems to prove otherwise, Japanese women aren't known for there melons.  Hence the price.

And now, the Godwin:
