Cucullen: There is a reason why Rome forbade uniformed soldiers within its walls.

So, the various police departments of the United States are going to band together and march on Washington in a violent revolutionary overthrow of the Government?

You've been watching too many Uwe Boll movies.

This. I'd start with the best intentions while trying to uphold the law and protect the community...but within a week I'd be flashing my sirens to get through mall traffic and arresting anyone who looked at me funny, wears jeggings or sports a barbed wire tattoo.

I saw the old pics in your profile so I gotta ask how do you even SEE over the hood of a car? It looked like you could have swam in that tea mug you were holding

Yeah, I often sit on a cushion when driving. But as a police officer I'd sit on the confiscated belongings of my terrorized subjects community partners in crime prevention.

Cucullen:
Yeah not sure when that came into common parlance. Probably started around the time Nixon declared war on the hippies, brown people and poor. Reagan probably helped step it up a bit too. Generally reflective of the militarization of the police force.  Not a good thing, the cops ARE civilians. Even though the law gives them preferential treatment they are still subject to it. Though obviously the importance of this distinction is being forgotten in the name of people being scared of their own shadow.
There is a reason why Rome forbade uniformed soldiers within its walls. And a reason the Roman Republic became the Roman Empire when Augustus marched his army through the gates.

This.

From wiki:

In US parlance, a civilian is also considered one not on active duty in the armed services or not on a police or firefighting force.

I guess it's just my personal hangup then.  But not active duty = civie.

I agree.
But they way police departments are using military tactics, uniforms, and weapons, you'd never know the difference.

This sounds like a great ploy to direct blame back at citizens for cops making bad decisions behind the wheel.

"You saw an officer do what in his squad car? Oh, that was a citizen; us cops would never do such a thing."

/See cops turn on their lights to get through an intersection and turn them right back off way too often.

I guess it's because the word came in to existence by these groups' usage to define the out-crowd, but it seems to me almost like we go with a contra-positive definition. If you think what organizations don't exist yet that you'd consider qualifying, I come up with "on duty in service to a job where expectation is you'll put yourself in harm's way to accomplish it."

What.

Make a point about departments destroying evidence or covering up actual incidences of brutality. Make a point at how the police departments in the United States continue to tolerate risky and irresponsible behaviors that endanger the public rather than face off with unions over the likehood that something was wrong with the paperwork.

Don't blatantly lie about what the law says, and doesn't say

Ni: If a civilian shoots an off-duty cop in self-defense, he'll be going to jail if he even survives the process of being arrested. If the off-duty cop shoots a civilian in self-defense in a similar situation, his buddies in blue will be patting him on the back and the ADA will be laughing "You want me to prosecute what?!"
