Most of the time, you don't need the doctor. But that one time you do, you really need him/her.

My girl gave birth to a dead baby and the doctor basically just stood there and held her vagina open.

The nurse did all the work. But if things went bad and my girl was in trouble, it would be the doctor who took over and solved the problem.

Yup.  I've got a couple nurses in my family.  If I ever have to go to the hospital, I won't allow any unsupervised doctor near me without an RN.

You know what they call the guy with the lowest grade in his medical school class? Doctor.

I've dealt with some brilliant doctors and many completely idiotic doctors. If you can find a good doctor, hold them near and dear. They're pretty rare and worth 100x their weight in gold.

For one, supply and demand. The entry-level degree for an RN is an Associates which can be obtained at your local community college. An MD/DO must first compete for a spot in med school, where seats are limited by the AMA/AACOM and further limited by the number of residency positions available post-grad that are funded mostly by Congress (with heavy lobbying by the AMA/AACOM to limit numbers to maintain a shortage).

The whole doctors vs nurses things is so farking retarded.  You need both to have a well functioning medical system. Yeah there's shiatty doctors out there who are incompetent and just went into it for the money but there's plenty of lazy nurses who mess up/don't fill orders who can completely screw a patient over (especially bad in cash strapped county hospitals).  In the optimal situation, you have experienced nurses who care for their patients and can inform the attending doctor of any notable changes in their patients and you have doctors who can take that information and make decisions on the next best course of action.  No matter what nurses with inferiority complexes say, when the shiat hits the fan, at some point you're going to need the knowledge a doctor has.

Because now people advocate for parents of hearing babies to learn how to sign so that they can communicate with their babies much sooner than they could if they stuck to the old-fashioned "wait until the baby learns to talk" method.

On the other hand, the cochlear implant industry's financial interests depends on rampant audism, the very same audism that says a deaf baby should never, ever, under any circumstances learn to sign, because they must "adapt" and pretend to be a pale imitation of a hearing baby.

So now you have hearing babies encouraged to sign, and deaf babies discouraged from it.  Thus, The Ultimate Irony.

As someone who works in a cash strapped hospital, I couldn't agree more.

I've been working in health care (HCA/CNA) for 2 years now. When I was 18, I would have laughed in your face if you had told me I would be wiping asses for a living. I love helping people, especially the seniors who don't have many family/friends around to visit.

That said, I honestly dread going to work now. On one of the wards I work on, it is extremely rare to have all scheduled employees show up for their shift. We have been chronically under-staffed since I started, usually one nurse, or sometimes two, and quite often short a hca/nca as well.

We are all incredibly tired and stressed out, because we can't give the care we want. 95 percent of my co-workers are in this field for the right reasons, to help others. Not only that, mistakes are made( sometimes big ones) because of the fatigue, and the simple fact staff doesn't have time to be thorough. How pathetic is that?

I would not want a family member going there.

Sorry for the rant

Don't you dare be sorry for that. I've seen it. It makes me stabby. Thank you for at least giving all you have when you are there. Don't, for a second, stand for the others who laze about. Call them on it. The patient comes first. Keep fighting. You are all that patient has as a defense. I know it can wear on you. You feel helpless and like no one is listening.

Just keep fighting. Please.

I volunteered in a nursing home for a few summers after high school and was always amazed at the compassion and dedication of the nursing staff there. Yes, there were a rare few who just didn't care and it showed, but they were in the vast, vast minority. My grandmother also spent considerable time in hospital/palliative care while she was suffering from Alzheimer's and her nurses were absolutely phenomenal.

Overstressed and overworked or not, you do amazing work and help give dignity to these people in the twilight of their lives. I'm not even close to being the only one who understands that and appreciates it.
