It's the 97th running and the 102nd year since the first race.

And the 80's were an ugly decade. My step dad has the 84 Fiero pace car replica. He promised that I inherit that one... yay?

The 70's were no bargain, after 1972 or so.

I remember the Beretta pace car, even sold a limited number of Berettas with the pace car finish. I know this because I saw a few around Chicago back in the day

Honestly it's not a bad looking car. New rims and a paint job and it'll look pretty good. I would highly doubt that keeping it original would increase it's value much.

I like that the last non-GM car was driven by the chairman of GM.

It's a fun car to drive. Only has about 2k miles on it. Been garaged for damn near 20 years. He also has a collection of VW bugs like you wouldn't believe.

Leno has driven the pace car, but Letterman hasn't?!!

Only 2K? wow thats low. Hmmm maybe get it stock then. I do have a special place in my heart for 80's cars though. Most of the cars were bad but there are a few gems. Also helps I'm an old GM guy with love for Pontiacs in general. Does he have any Things? Thats another car I've always liked for some reason.

Looks like an emergency services vehicle. Did somebody crash already? (Trucks are always a bad choice.)

When Jim Caviezel drove the pace car, was he wearing his Christ costume?

Looks more appropriate for the Grand Marshal of the Tournament of Roses Parade.

Now THAT'S a pace car!

anyone notice the HP numbers? Amazing to think how far we've come with power output.

good_2_go: Leno has driven the pace car, but Letterman hasn't?!!

Good point.  Now, Leno is known for his car collection or what have you... but Letterman is from Indy (I think?) and owns/owned part of an Indy Car team.

I was talking to my roomie about that the other night. I had an '85 IROC Z-28. It came with a 305 TPI V8. Rated around 215 horsepower. 0-60 in 7 seconds. That was the top of the line Camaro that year. Now a days that's not bad for a midsized car...

Pretty cool to look at the evolution of the American car over 100 years.

Well, he wasn't the chairman of GM at the time... and Lutz was pretty much responsible for the Viper existing in the first place, so it made sense.

1984 Pontiac Fiero

Yeah, I remember when the Fiero was The Future of Cars.

So, you broke a fender? Hey, just go buy a new one and snap it on.

They handle amazingly well. It's a blast to drive.

Not to hate on you Indy, but I drove one of these this morning, and it was a pretty sweet ride.

If you don't want it I'll take it in a second. I think the Fiero was one of the best cars of the 1980s simply because it was different. A mid-engined two-seater from the General? Yes, please.

Incidentally, if the pace cars and their histories interest you, one of the websites I frequent, Curbside Classic, runs pace car histories every May.
