Looks clear.

Didn't the last film end with him becoming the owner of a bunch of half-dead people with a space armada nobody in the universe could stop?

Looks like things didn't work out.  Totally looking forward to this.

I feel like I should loathe these movies, but I enjoyed the hell out of the first two and am looking forward to this one as well.

I'm also not a big fan of Vin Diesel but I've enjoyed the Riddick universe. This one looks a lot like Pitch Black though.

Yeah. I liked the Riddick films too, so far. They feel like good ole hardcore scifi should -- the plots work, the dialogs are acceptable and good at times, the vistas are gorgeous and the acting is passable or better. Altogether the result is quite good.

Yea, someone said the assassin dude kind of looks like a Necromonger, so they might not be too happy with his leadership style.

Bring back Kira as a necromonger, preferably a naked one

Pitch Black was a fantastic movie. Unexpectedly so. The Chronicles of Riddick though? Not so much. That one was dumb. It seemed like someone wanted to make their own space opera and that character doesn't lend itself to that.

THIS movie looks like it should have been the sequel to Pitch Black. This one I'm interested in.

I agree.  Chronicles of Riddick was just a bizzare sequel to Pitch Black.  I don't know why they thought shoe-horning that character into a completely unrelated universe was a good idea.

Maybe it'll end up being the Highlander 2 of the series.  :-)

For a second there, I was worried it would be more like Chronicles but it looks like it will be more like Pitch Black. I loved Pitch Black and while I thought Chronicles was a better than average film, it just seemed weird and out of place to me as a sequel to Pitch Black.

I'll be climbing aboard the hype train.

Agree completely, and it looks like someone in a position to make the call got the message.

Not impressed with the trailer. So it's a remake of Pitch Black. I've seen that movie already....

Lookin` goooood (in my best Cheech voice).  Wasn't a big fan of the 2nd installment but loved Pitch Black and this looks like it should do it some justice.

I feel bad saying this, because I love both Pitch Black and Chronicles of Riddick... but that looked kind of lame.  Like a watered down version of Pitch Black, without all the plot that was provided by those supporting characters.

What the series needed was something delving more into the Furion and Elemental mythos, leaving behind the Necromongers.  Maybe Riddick discovering he has a daughter that he has to save from kidnappers, and so he hunts them down to a backwater hellhole, and then he finds out his 10-year-old kid is as much of a badass fighter as he is, because she's half Furion and half Elemental.

Anything but a generic, "Men, we're here to collect a bounty on Riddick.  Watch out, he can see at night without having to wear the nightvision goggles that we can't afford despite having a f*cking spaceship."

I'll still watch this in case Starbuck gets nekkid.

Interested, but Pitch Black worked because the characters were characters. This is a flat bounty hunting brigade. Better be folks from his past prior to bounty hunting with some stories to tell at least.

I guess I disagree with the consensus here in that I thought The Chronicles of Riddick was at least an attempt to create a new sci-fi universe. Pitch Black was pretty much an "Alien" movie.

Your intuition into the dozen or so lines of dialog in a pre-trailer is astounding!

I liked 'Chronicles of Riddick' more than 'Pitch Black'. Chronicles was original while Pitch Black was more of a generic sci-fi not-really-horror film. Also the Riddick in Chronicles was far more likable than the basically evil-until-the-very-end Riddick in Pitch Black.

Are they going to pretend that Riddick didn't end up in charge of the Necromongers, that all of that didn't happen? I thought they would have him go into the Underverse to get Kira back.

As to the trailer, it looks like the new movie will bug me in the same way Pitch Black did in that there's no way a desert planet can support that many big lifeforms. There's no prey for them to eat and no reason for them to lay dormant until it gets dark so they can come out and hunt nothing.

The thing is, the Riddick films aren't really science fiction. They are fantasy. Chronicles of Riddick was essentially King Kull. Riddick is a re-skinned Robert E. Howard anti-hero. Yes, they have a sciency looking backdrop, but they are naught but fantasy, with some hip new threads.

And there's nothing wrong with it, because it breathes new life into that style. I loved Pitch Black, and the animated films, and Chronicles of Riddick, and the video games were a nice way to bridge the gaps between the tales. It's a neat way to bridge the material, and I love the fact that they are reaching deep into Robert Howard's vault for inspiration. Heck, the ending of Chronicles of Riddick was pure Howard, with the crown settling on the head of a conquering hero, who just wanted the girl to live.

The ships are dirty, lived in, and the universe that they zip around is aged and weathered, lived in, but it's a backdrop for fantasy tales of barbarians and the monsters that challenge them. It's a great way to connect to those tales. It's a fresh way to dig deep into that mythology, and tell it anew. You could almost call it space opera, only without the strong jawed heroes, but it's not. It's a fantasy franchise that happens to set itself in a science fiction backdrop, and that is what makes it a lot of fun. Monsters, bad men, bad girls, and barbarians and more. I like that they are embracing the roots of these tales, and making them fresh and new. Howard, I suspect, would be proud, at least if there were more nekkid chicks. The franchise has plenty of rippling muscled heroes, and as a flawed and brutal protagonist goes, Riddick fits the bill nicely. It is a fun way to revive these stories, and make them new.

Chronicles was a little silly at times, but created a very cool universe and some really fascinating characters. Riddick himself is entertaining in any setting.

Is it just me getting old or are these movies just formulaic FPS video game ADHD wankfests. They all look alike now.

I loved Chronicles. Awesome set design, costumes, look. Loved the Riddick universe. And infinitely more interesting and appealing than one of the 'star' universes.

The movie would have been better if it didn't think it was an epic. Riddick vs. the Necromongers= cool idea. But then he ended up getting kidnapped and taken to a prison planet just so he could bust out and get back to where he started from, and by the time he gets back, the pacing had been killed. If they would have left that part of the film on the cutting room floor and kept The Chronicles of Riddick tight and focused, it would have worked out much better.
