An evaluation of four artisanal ice cream cookbooks.

That word is comprised of two smaller words.  "art"  "isanal".

Or maybe 3 words, I don't know.

I happen to like certain flavors of B&J, but that had better damn well be a photoshop, or I'll get stabby.

"Your mom got anal last night, Trebek!"

Sorry, no. Ice cream is surrounded by a dome of impenetrability. It is an immutable good.

Farking scrumptious.

That last rocky road recipe at the very end of TFA sounded pretty awesome, but celery ice cream with rum raisins in it? Wtf?

I'm not a huge ice cream fan (though I do love B&J, suck it haters) but the two best ice creams I've ever had...

1) a vanilla I had in Amish country in Pennsylvania. My grandfather and I went to a Amish family style place, where they have groups at a single table, passing items, like a family meal. Dessert was the best vanilla ice cream I've ever had in my life. I asked for the recipe. Guy in the kitchen came out sheepishly, it was the local store brand of ice cream. (Not available in CA, so I don't remember the name but it was a cheap local).

2) My roommate makes homemade ice cream. Homemade is just the best, unbelievably good. Alton Brown recipes, and an ice cream maker. Though it broke so I need to get a new one now that it's pretty much summer. :D

Mandrake, do you realize that in addition to fluoridating water, why, there are studies underway to fluoridate salt, flour, fruit juices, soup, sugar, milk... ice cream. Ice cream, Mandrake, children's ice cream.

I personally really enjoy a poor man's peach melba: two scoops of vanilla bean ice cream with a spoonful of peach jam on top.  Crumble a graham cracker over top if you want to put on airs.

Probably Turkey Hill; they're pretty big up in Amish Country.  They even have their own little tourist trap guest experience exhibition just over the Susquehanna as you cross into Lancaster County.

I have an ice maker, and I've made a bunch in the past.  I only eat ice cream maybe once every few months now, though, so it hasn't been worth my bother to make more.  Thus, it sits unused and gathering dust.  :-(

My favourite ice cream is bourbon: 1/2 bottle of bourbon chilled in a fridge that has some sort of ice cream in the freezer section (this last part is optional, as it the chilling).

I highly, highly enjoy Molly Moon, but the truth is that the best ice creams there are relatively simple (vanilla; coffee; Scout mint, which is peppermint with crushed Thin Mints; and cherry chocolate chunk, which is by far her best flavor and is basically mind-blowing in how great it is).

Her adventures into artisanal ice cream with the Beecher's Flagship cheddar and the salted caramel and such are usually not very good at all. They are pretty bad, actually.

The best "fancypants" thing Molly Moon has ever had is this toffee-cornflakes-bourbon-crunch thing that tasted AMAZING with coffee ice cream. Oh, and if their cinnamon waffle cones count, those too.

/Also, she needs to figure out how to make a straight chocolate ice cream that tastes good.

We make the best strawberry ice cream by cooking up a custard and then mixing in some fresh puréed strawberries with a little bit of lemon juice.  Refrigerate overnight in a bowl and then put into the ice cream maker the next day.  Delicious.  Can't wait for the strawberry crops to come in so we can make a bunch of it.

I can't stand ice cream with chunky stuff, because then you can barely taste the ice cream.

2013-05-24 04:16:33 PM
I used to love Ben & Jerry's World's Best Vanilla.  Sod the diabetes!  Gimme a pint of that, and a box of Thin Mints, and I'll be happy for a while...

Alton Brown's vanilla recipe is the best thing that ever happened to me.  Swapping out half the sugar for fruit preserves (peach for him, apricot for us) gives it just the perfect sweetness.

thismomentinblackhistory: Glad to see Jeni's represented.

I've been to Jeni's many times. It's the best textured ice cream this side of the Atlantic that I've had. They had a chocolate/lapsang souchong that was divine. But, I like ice cream, so I'm not picky about it.

Ice cream is like sex: It makes your tongue numb, and gets you all sticky.

Really, just ignore them and let them enjoy their artisanal whatevers.  It's not like you're going to be unable to find a place that has mint chocolate chip.

pet peeve time:

I don't care whether you call it French vanilla, vanilla bean, Ugandan vanilla, whatever.  But it better taste like vanilla --- as opposed to that flavorless crap people call "vanilla" in the USA.  Hell, people even USE the word "vanilla" now to mean "plain" or "basic" or "flavorless."  It's a travesty, I tell you.  Why would you do that to one of the greatest flavors in the world?

Whoever first tried to pass off flavorless bland crap as "vanilla" ice cream should be boiled in a pit of anthrax ripple no-fat frozen milk.  Except , you know, it's not frozen anymore because it's BOILING.  AAARGH!  Just use a flamethrower on them or cut their heart out with a spoon or something.  I can't think of a punishment bad enough.
