FTFA: "1. Terriers"

media.tumblr.com

Look, I loved Terriers.  It was a fantastic show with great writing, acting, directing, and story.  You know what else it had?  A fantastic ending.  Utterly perfect for the show.  Sometimes we just need to let these things be.  Citizen Kane doesn't need a sequel and neither does a great television show.

One day, one of these comebacks is going to fail miserably (I'm looking at you Veronica Mars) and we're all going to sit down and say, "maybe this whole 'resurrecting a show after it's been off the air for a decade' thing isn't such a good idea."

Yeah, "Alphas" would be at the top of my list. Seems like a good fit for Netflix, too.

I really liked that show.

"The River" was decent, but I don't think they really need to do more of it.  Sometimes a story can be told in one season and we can leave it at that.

While I'd love to see it happen, I'm afraid too many of the stars have moved on to other shows.  I don't think you're going to pry Olyphant away from Justified at this point.  (And if you are a Deadwood fan and haven't seen Justified yet, well, then...what the hell is wrong with you?)

I know. It's just a shame it never got a proper ending. HBO was supposed to conclude the series with a couple of feature length films but they never got off the ground.

Absolutely.  HBO forced the second season to stray a little with the compressed schedule, but allegedly a full six-season arc was sketched out.  The first season was brilliant.

Ed Grubermann: Brimstone.

I can't believe my two choices are already represented.  I was convinced I was the only person who had even heard of that show.

There was a very short lived sitcom, a sort of Odd Couple rip-off where a divorced guy moves in with a party guy and they would day drink hit on women etc, had kind of a Swingers feel to it.  Anybody remember the name?  They should make that show.

Deadwood
Carnivale

Better off Ted

Haven't seen most of that list. Somehow it makes me not want to; the annoyance of a prematurely ended show can be more painful than not having seen it at all.

2013-05-24 02:18:44 PM
Guys, stop. Seriously. Outside of the canned laughter sitcom crap that still exists on the broadcast networks, the overall quality of television shows over the last few years has vastly improved. Because Hollywood sucks, there's a metric crapload of talented writers more than skilled and worthy enough of creating content for the silver screen who are disillusioned with the business behind cinema and turning to networks desperate for new programming to fill their vacant time slots.

I'd much rather let someone just create something from scratch, because of late, the new stuff coming out is generally more than worthwhile.

/I'll make an exception for AD...

Oh, I concur.  Not bring the old show back, per se, but stream Rifftrax'd movies.  Similarly, I know it would be far too demanding, but I would love to see Netflix selections come with DVD options like commentaries and behind-the-scenes nonsense

Dow Jones and the Temple of Doom: Southland. That is all.

Agreed!  That would probably be the easiest show to bring back on the air.  Just film in everyday Los Angeles, no special backdrops or expensive soundstages or anything.  Keep the cast small, no large ensemble.  Quality writing, like House of Cards.

Southland's biggest failure was that it could not expand beyond its core audience by streaming past episodes online through Netflix, Hulu, or On Demand.  I was watching it on NBC, but I didn't know it moved to TNT and lost track of several episodes, then refused to watch any new ones until I had a low-cost way of catching up on the missing episodes first.

TNT killed the show by not doing any kind of online distribution.  Netflix can easily revive it.

They've almost all moved on to other shows. And like half of them are either on or have been on Sons of Anarchy and Justified. (Lost too, for that matter).

There's just SO MANY stars... even if you could get them all to agree to come back... the date would have to be like 10 years from now before they'd all be free at the same time.

Agreed.  After they left Agrestic, the show went all kinds of wrong.  Mary-Louise Parker's character became incredibly annoying and self-absorbed, acted like she had all the answers but yet was making incredibly bad and selfish decisions that were putting her family in constant peril.  It had its moments in later seasons, but never really returned to form and I ultimately felt dumber having watched the whole thing.

I think it would be fun to watch old episodes of 60 minutes.  What was a pressing issue this week in 1983?  I know I could look that up, but I want to be told about it from the perspective of people who didn't know how it would end up, and I want to hear the analog stopwatch.

Better Off Ted was great, but the second season was inferior to the first, and it was beginning to lose its magic.
A sixth season for Angel would be cool, but prior to the apocalypse, while they are still at Wolfram & Hart.  Season five rocked!
Something *like* Dollhouse, without actually *being* Dollhouse.  Call it a reboot.

That show just needs to be rebooted.  30 years later someone tries to replicate Sam's experiment and leaps, Get Jim Belushi to play the part of Al, and have it star the guy from Chuck.

And keep it the hell away from Subway. The last season of Chuck was one long, extremely embarrassing advertisement.

While impossible for this to happen, I wish that the television show Way Out would have lasted longer. It was hosted by Roald Dahl and could be compared to the darker episodes of The Twilight Zone, but approached with slightly misanthropic black humor. There are a few episodes on YouTube:

Killer Cars: Guys, stop.

I could not disagree more.

escherblacksmith: Dungeons and Dragons . . . yeah, I want to see them go home dammit.

They actually wrote the script for the final episode, which resolved everything, but the show was canned before the episode went into production. A quick check on Google will locate you a copy of the completed script, if you're curious as to how it ended (or was going to end).

JenFromTheWood: Greatest American Hero.

They tried making a spin-off, called "The Greatest American Heroine", but it wasn't picked up and the pilot was aired as a TV movie instead. Quick synopsis: It takes place a few years after the end of the series. Ralph ends up blowing his cover (why he never wore a mask, i'll never understand), and the aliens that made the suit decide to give the suit to pre-school teacher.

I've heard rumors of a remake of GAH, but i'd rather if they continued from the point where the lady inherited the suit from Ralph, maybe even keep him as her mentor since he's had so much experience with the suit and its powers.

Wow totally forgot about Brisco County Jr and Sliders. Seconded.

Never really watched Brisco (it aired before I was aware of the awesome that is Bruce Cambell), but so much yes to Sliders....with a few exceptions:

Everything after season two never happened. Arturo, Wade, Quinn, and Remy are all alive and well. No "brother", no "merged alternate", no Kari "30-day PMS" Wurher, no Kromaggs. Tracy Torme is the main showrunner again, with full control of story and budget. Back to the "what if" concept, no more cannibalizing stuff from other sci-fi shows. Bring back Logan St. Clair as a recurring villain, and pretend that Roger Daltery eating Arturo's brains never happened.

Hell, now that i'm mentioning sci-fi shows starring Jerry O'Connell, I'd love a continuation of "My Secret Identity". It's been 25 years since it first aired, so make the new series about him raising his kid(s) that developed his powers after puberty.

Yeah, but the live action version would allow we 30-40+-year-old adolescents to drool over Captain Liberty's (lack of) costume.  (Or Batmanuel's if you prefer.  Or Mothman's.  Whatever.)

FuryOfFirestorm: Never really watched Brisco (it aired before I was aware of the awesome that is Bruce Cambell), but so much yes to Sliders....with a few exceptions:

The entire series (one long season) of Brisco is on DVD. It's well worth watching if you get a chance. Everybody thinks Firefly was so original to combine the old west and scifi, but Brisco did it first, and it did it better. Bruce Campbell beats Nathan Fillian every time. Kelly Rutherford was hotter than anyone on Firefly, too.

You need to know why it's so important not to touch Pete's piece. You need to see how a painter can stop a train. You need to witness true villainy in the form of John Bly.

I highly encourage people who haven't seen Brisco to go watch it NOW.

MisterRonbo: They should bring back that show that starred William Shatner, the one that was set in another century. What was it called?

You're probably thinking of TekWar. It was originally a series of Sci-Fi novels "written" by Shatner, which then got a comic series, and then a handful of TV movies. This eventually led to a short-lived TV series on USA Network in the mid 90's. I liked the books and the TV movies, but never read the comic or watched the TV show.

It ended like it should have, probably.  The last season was pretty good as a quick watch-through.
