Don't worry. Most Boston fans are actively trying to forget last night, and were there any Ranger fans still around?

On further review, while you could read Tort's f-bombs off his lips, the f-bomb that made the air was actually said by the linesman last night

Yeah, but you know he instigated it.  Torts rules.  I love a coach that shows emotion.

I'm more surprised the linesman actually gave one back. Seems like one of those "unwritten" rules for the officials (and by unwritten I mean it's probably written in several places)

I say the Senators, led by their stout coach Maximus Walrus, eat the Penguins alive tonight. Matt Cooke becomes so incensed he reverts to his scum bag self and gets suspended indefinitely for reaching into the opposing bench and slapping Maximus Walrus with an illegally obtained trout.

The impetus towards the goal was not a kicking motion towards the net, however trying to angle a deflection (without a real "kick") would also be disallowed.

I think he has the rule wrong.

Redirects have been okay for a long time. And you can see on that play that Morrow was clearly trying to get the puck with his skate, but trying his damndest not to thrash and kick at it.

dallasstars4life.files.wordpress.com

Let's just say the NHL is particularly sensitive to "letter of the law" vs. "intent/spirit of the law" -- they will let goals off skates stand if there's no obvious intent to kick directly into the net even if it makes the "letter of the law" interpretation a little vague or ambiguous.

If you deliberately turn your skate to redirect the puck in a "not really a kick, but essentially a kick" motion, you might have that one disallowed -- but it has to be really obvious

cameroncrazy1984: 100% kicked in.

...or not. I really, really don't like to get into the anti-ref paranoia, but it's really starting to look like the league wants the Pens to move on. Half the penalties called against the Sens are marginal at best (the proverbial 52 in a 50 zone), the Pens aren't being called as often for the same things, Crosby getting the benefit of the doubt in the face off circle quite a bit, and then that goal tonight...

I dunno. The ref's aren't the reason that the Pens are up 3-1, but they sure aren't keeping the playing field level in this series.

/Go Sens!
//It's gravy being in the playoffs at all after this year, but it'd be nice to go out losing to JUST the Pens, not the league as well.

Techhell: cameroncrazy1984: 100% kicked in.

So uh... After that call, still believe that?

2013-05-24 08:06:02 PM
That's a penalty? lol

And I hate the Pens but that was a BS call.  Big time

cameroncrazy1984: See, that look right there is why a lot of people hate Crosby. That "What, me do wrong?" look.

In fairness, it looks like the ref who called it is having second thoughts about calling the goal a good goal, and is trying to make up for a bad call. That's about the only reason I can see why that was called a penalty.

On further review, it was a ticky-tack call. But the look is still dumb.

Donnchadha: [dallasstars4life.files.wordpress.com image 300x265]

Let's just say the NHL is particularly sensitive to "letter of the law" vs. "intent/spirit of the law" -- they will let goals off skates stand if there's no obvious intent to kick directly into the net even if it makes the "letter of the law" interpretation a little vague or ambiguous.

The NHL is much bigger on the intent/spirit of the law.  The referees are allowed and encouraged to use their discretion in cases of penalties, goals, icing, etc.  There are a few exceptions, namely the puck over glass delay of game penalty.  However in almost all other cases, the referee's discretion is used to keep the game flowing.

2013-05-24 08:07:54 PM

I shouldn't judge too hard, not like the beer they flog at footy/cricket games down here is much better.  But at least it's our damn piss, made from 100% Aussie cat urine (I think they add roo piss to Carlton Draught for flavour, in fairness) and not some dirty foreigner's.

Wheat sucks too as far as adding something good to the flavor. Same thing with oatmeal chocolate apricot and all the other flavored beers that are in vogue.

I like some wheat beers. Allagash White, Harpoon UFO, Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier, and Sam Adams Summer stand out in my mind as being very very good wheat beers. Blue Moon, meh at best.

If there's anything worse than paying $8-$12 for a beer at the game, is the fact it's corn-syrupped swill.

I'll never forget seeing a sign at a store for Busch Beer, which proudly proclaimed: "Brewed with Illinois corn!"

That's a strange thing to be proud of.

There's nothing wrong with adding different grains to the process - oatmeal stout, yes please - EXCEPT if you do it to make it CHEAPER.

I dont realy care what it costs. I just dont care for all the fashion beers out there that adsd crap that masks flavor with trendy ingredients. Every single company that makes an oatmeal stout makes a better stout without oatmeal.

I enjoy oatmeal stouts, but there are some strange farking grain mixes out there.  I enjoy variety in my beer, but I've come across some beers where I've thought "You [the brewer] don't even care what this tastes like, you're just trying to get people to buy this on weirdness points."

Ironically, it's better if you use the cheaper beer for shandy. Don't use your high quality craft brews - you wouldn't make sangria with a $50 bottle of wine.

As long as it can cut down the hoppiness it's all good... this fad for ULTRAHOPS in "beer" defeats the entire purpose! You are supposed to get the full experience with a beer, not choke down the hop-flavored beverage!

You can grow accustomed to it and compared to other wheat beers some are definitely better than others. I can kind of give wheat beer a pass because its 1000+ years old so its not simply trendy. Especially if its from some place that cant grow good barley.

Love the guy, but I wouldn't want him coaching over here. Granted Vancouver needs a bit more spirit behind the bench, but not that much.

No, I think we need someone that can promote a more offense-minded style like Detroit or Pittsburgh.
I'd like the lock the whole team in  room, show them the Detroit-Chicago game from last night, and yell "See?? That's how you defend a 1-0 lead, kill penalties, and guard the last two minutes of the game!"

Before he got the Ranger gig he did some time as an analyst at TSN, and was actually very good, not quite as, ummm, passionate as he is a coach... but pretty sharp, and not another freakin goalie...

Tomorrow is supposed to be raining and crappy here in Massholeland. So Monaco qualifying tomorrow followed by a brew day.

Mountain Kolsch Ale clone.

In 2 1/2 gallons water at 150° F for 45 minutes steep:
8 oz. lager malt
12 oz carapils malt.

Add 4 lbs of extra light DME ( 1 lbs at first really, other 3 with 15 minutes left in the boil)

Bring to boil.
Add 4 AAU of Spalt hops
Boil 45 minutes.

Add 2 AAU of Spalt hops
Boil 5 minutes.

Knockout. Crash temp and add water to ~1.042 OG  (5 1/4 gallons totalish)
Pitch Kolsch yeast at 68

Wait weeks upon weeks for tasty beer.

Tortorella is a moody, unprofessional asshole.

Sure, they always chalk it up to "Torts being Torts" but he gets a hard time for a reason. He's a high strung type-A personality who can blame everyone but himself.

When he came out and said "we know what we did, we know what we did" that was the most classless post-game interview ever.

If you're going to come out and bellyache about your team's horrible performance and f*cking waste everyone's time, WTF did you even come out for in the first place, clown shoes?

F*CK TORTS!! ASSHOLE!

I wonder if Alffie's got another year in him?  That's a pretty large whole to fill...  Otherwise right there with you.

Johnny the Tackling Alzheimers Patient: BallZach: Does he get to keep all the hats?  I would keep all the hats.

Most places, the hats go to charity.

That they do. There's a nice big container of the hats collected for the season in the lobby (or at least was last time I was there)

Yep, considering where they were last year, Ottawa fans should be proud.

What do you want him to do to prove he's no longer a goon, walk on water?

Doesn't help that Mario the hypocrite said boo about Cooke essentially ending Marc Savard's career but busted a blood vessel when his team got roughed up last year in the Flyers series out the year before when the Islanders failed to bow to them after Matt Cooke instigated a brawl where a Penguins player slugged DiPietro.

I stand by what I've already stated.

DiPietro was asking for it. Don't start nothin', won't be nothin'. Besides, it was goalie-on-goalie violence, which under §17.8.004 of the NHL rules is always hilarious.

Goalie on Goalie violence is always legit.  And if DiPietro doesn't get slugged he might learn to play enough that you guys don't make the playoffs again.  We did the Islanders a favor there.

Also, while the Cooke/Savard comment is legit, your memory of the Pens Islanders Brawl is highly faulty.

I'm quite sure I remember seeing highlights of Cooke running  DiPietro multiple times in the game before.

Yep. Maybe this had something to do with it.

Probably meant for me. It's ok. Cheers. I'm heading to bed. Chores, errands, and beer making to be done tomorrow.

Which totally justified Trevor Gillies elbowing Eric Tangradi in the head(then taunting him as he lay concussed) and Michael Haley going after Brent Johnson.  If your issue is with Matt Cooke, then take it up with him.

Inchoate: 2wolves: Johnny the Tackling Alzheimers Patient: 2wolves: Anderson is feeling what Fleury felt last year in the Flyers series where the D just seemed to evaporate.

Yeah about that: after living a year and a half of "goaltender controversy" in this city, I'm curious what Pens fan expect to see happen with Fleury.

Not a bloody clue.

With the way Vokoun has been playing, and two promising young goalies in Hartzell and (now) Thiessen, I think MAF's status is pretty tenuous. A shame, because I like Fleury a lot, but maybe he's run his course with the Penguins.

There was a suggestion on local radio (Mark Madden, if you care) today that Roy might want him for the Avalanche.  Makes as much sense as anything.

I've been out all night drinking at a bar for a friend's birthday, but I wanted to wish the Sens fans well. Your team played clean and better than the series record showed. Much respect to the fans and the team. I hope Alfredsson returns - the guy is a class act, as is most of your team (outside of Neil - your version of what Matt Cooke used to be). Here's to future meetings in the playoffs!
