Nothing wrong with that atmosphere. It has character. It says 'I'm productive!' I have to admire any level of air quality that allows you to run really fast, turn around and still see your 'wake.'

Yes, they can. They don't normally, but as they become stronger and more numerous they begin to breed.

Scary thought isn't it?

I was there a year ago and we were lucky that it had rained a few days before so we saw a bit of blue in the sky but it is normally very grey.

I so wish the US would get rid of the job killing, economy crushing, draconian big government anti-business environmental nazi laws that are hampering our job creators.

Pittsburgh used to be the industrial lynchpin of a thriving steel industry.  People were happy, had jobs, etc... Here's how it used to look libbos:

Well, if computer games have taught me anything, that's what you'd expect after launching birds at pigs.

Basic ecology here, people.

Actually I believe it was pig pandemonium and a deluge of dead ducks.  It's going to get truly horrible in the future with a cascading cacophony of chirping chickens and a catnip crazed cat catastrophe.

Funny

But it says something that people go where the money is, and are willing to live in shiat to do it.

People don't need blue skies, they need green cash.

/or, uh, pink in China

Hey! That looks just like any other modern industrialized city. Why just the other day, NYC had thousands of dead pigs floating in the Hudson River.  And pink water? Jeez, Chicago has green river water every year.

Same thing. Same thing. Keep pouring your 401K money into China!!1!

How do they keep those political prisoners healthy enough to donate organs? I bet the Chinese government doesn't sell a lot of lungs.

Because the Communist Party is an authoritarian regime, you might expect that it could just force Hebei to change its economic model and clean up its act.
In reality, China is highly decentralized politically, and provinces often ignore policies from the center.

I think this right here is the single most thing most Westerners do not understand or know about when evaluating China.

towatchoverme: I've been to Shanghai a number of times.

Well conveniently if you read the article it helpfully points out that Shanghai has less of a problem with pollution because of very strict vehicle emissions standards and a strong ocean breeze that clears some of the bad air out. Literally did not know that before I RTFA.
