Could we do this with Detroit?

There's GOT to be miles of empty space with underutilized infrastructure.

I'm really surprised most of those stores would have the power and cooling needed for that. they must have some horrible locations if that makes more sense then leasing or selling them at ffire sale prices.

I too wondered about the heat and power, but I'm going to assume that that was folded into the monthly bill they pay for the rent, so their going to soak their landlords for the new higher power draw.  And since mall landlords suck, I say "I'm okay with this".

Maybe the harder thing is siting these near Tier-1 high bandwidth services for the access.

TFA says they're all on fiber backbones and they all have at least 1megawatt of power.

Now everybody's just leasing logical server resources from Amazon, and its okay that there's no availability guarantee because you can just buy more redundancy.

From the way TFA describes it, the converted space is all owned by Sears from either their own purchases, or real estate they acquired when they merged with KMart.  These aren't your typical mall type store fronts they are converting, but rather industrial warehouses and abandoned stand-alone stores.

TFA also says that they will be using conex containers (sort of like the google ones) that manage the cooling/energy internally, so all it needs is a plugin for power and a plugin for data.  as far as the container is concerned, it could sit in the open air of a desert (not much unlike an open kmart store is now).

Somewhere, I can't remember where, a library bought one.  My first reaction was that they should prepare for a floor crack or collapse, depending on the foundation.  Library are heavy mofos.

280 million sq/ft.  That's 10 square miles.  That's a lot of solar power area.

you don't need redundancy because the cloud does it all.. Magical clouds with fairies carrying packets to the leprechauns who hold the golden data.   And then you have the guards on flying pegasai  preventing the bad ogres and trolls from hacking into the data.

LOL.  No.  The industry is growing at a nice pace.  I used to work in a data center.  For the 5 years I worked there, we didn't have to do jack as far as advertising and there was always a waiting list for cabinet space. Always.

Hell, we'd have customers moving equipment into cabinets before we'd even turned up power.

There have to be some closed/dying Sears stores in places you can buy power from the TVA (cheapest power in the US).  Getting hooked the net can't be a problem, those places haven't moved since steam engines were high tech, and why do you think the Southern Pacific Internal Network Telecommunications was the first to go all fiber?  (Answer: right of way everywhere in the US).

My favorite spot would be to put a datacenter in upstate NY (preferably Buffalo, but Rochester would do).  Nearly as cheap power, cheap cold (even if you don't pull from Erie), and educated workforce (don't hire in the Tennessee Valley if you want answers other than "Jesus brings the data").  Just stock up for the next big snowstorm  (the TVA gets flooding, snow is safe to wait out if the roof is properly constructed and you packed food/backup diesel).  Don't pretend there aren't closed dying sears (or Kmarts) in Buffalo and Rochester.

That's what they did at the one I used to live near, except not at fire sale prices. Whole foods took about a third of the store (which wasn't doing that bad) at a premium, since Harris Teeter sold the shopping center on either side of the sears building a premium to be the only grocery store in the development. But Sears isn't technically a part of that shopping center, they own their buildings and parking lot at that site, so they were happy to sell them some space. Harris Teeter was royally pissed, but there was nothing they could do. Trader Joes is also trying to rezone land right across the street for the same reason.
