I haz a rant.... Went to leave for work this morning....garage door opener won't work. Nuthin'. The remote in my car won't work either. CRAP! Open the door by hand, drive out front...walk back to garage, and pull the door down. Get back home....park out front, walk to the garage...door is OPEN! ???? Walk back out front, drive around to garage, and try to close door. It's latched. Maybe, somehow it has a short or something in it, and opened itself up after I left??? Whatever.....get home, go to put clothes in dryer....dryer doesn't work!!!! WTF?????? Of course, landlord is out of town right now. I seem to be jinxed today. End of rant....need moar beer.

Call an electrician...asap.. either incoming power or in-panel issues.. one side of the power is intermittent.. there are two hot wires coming in, plus a neutral or common wire.. either hot to neutral is 120 volts  between the two hots is 240 volts.. the dryer has to have 240 volts to run.. with the garage door not working, that indicates that one of the hot wires is either dead or intermittent.. have you noticed brighter or dimmer lights?   appliances can be damaged when this happens....

I called the landlord...he said he will come home tomorrow. No dimming lights. His house cleaner was here yesterday and I'm assuming everything was fine. I checked his breakers downstairs, and they are all full on. I put the garage door opener on "lock" so, hopefully it won't pull a fast one on me and stay open all night. When I push the button on the dryer, I can hear a "hum" but it doesn't kick on to turn.

I'm gonna go unplug the dryer...just for the heck of it.

Me too, also still at # 3. This does not compute. We got Juno from # 9 to # 3 in just a couple of hours, and we can't get her into the top two after 48 hours? *shakes head* Well then, I guess we all just have to try harder, don't we?

You definitely have a power problem... keep your nose in gear for strange smells around the electrical panel... and check for warm spots... do you have central ac?   that is also 240 volts...

I see these pics of animals sharing an obviously affectionate bond with other species and it strikes me that 'Maslow's hierarchy of Needs' does not only apply to hunmans.

I wonder how a non-human experiences 'self-actualization'...

You know how good it smells right after the grass had been cut? That's chlorophyll...aka 'grass 'blood'.
I wonder if they experience the scent of iron-based blood in an equally positive manner...

No, I have NOT been smoking or ingesting anything...I just wonder about stuff.

While I have no idea why your car remote would not work, forget that, the rest of what you described indicates a potentially serious electrical issue - try calling the local fire dept. non-emergency # and see if they will come and take a look, tell them that you are worried that it is a fire hazard (and it very well could be). Better safe than sorry.

So, in keeping with Memorial day, and remembering those who have gone before..not Military, however they were mighty hunters...

Thomas..black kitteh to young lot. Mighty hunter, lost to pulmonary thrombosis..second instace.

Porky Pig, very big kitteh. Looked like his hind end was jacked up. Also black. He lurved me, and visited me while I was sick at field school. I swear! I felt him curl against my legs. I slept well that night..pnuemonia..

Cinderella, the Grey Lady, lost to oral cancer. She was grey and white. A wonderful lay, who insisted on sleeping with me while healing a broken pelvis.

Jimminy Cricket, who was my bro's cat..vanished..

Maggy, sent to the farm for decorating my house with pee..she vaporized. I hope she found a loving heart.

Aiko, Queen of all she surveyed. Siamese lynx point, before it was accepted.Keeper of my sanity while in school. Alpha tester of the Potato.

Punkin, Tortie tabby in red,cream.black,orange. Long of hair, and patience. So sorry I did not have the right comb to make you happy kitteh, until you were old. Winner in show for age group. And Best In Show. You wrre teh awesome.

Elias J. Cat. Such a stinker! But I would not have it any other way.

ferfer72: Kittens are safely ensconced in the guest bathroom.  They didn't hiss at me as I put them in the tub, and I put a soft towel and my t-shirt from today in there with them.  They are filthy.  I think we'll have to take the baby shampoo advice Monday (I have to work 15 hours tomorrow).

I THINK (could be wrong, do that frequently) that domari once recommended using diluted Dawn for kittens who have flea and tic issues.

Need advice...poor old Charlie, the group home cat. I've been doing everything I can (including providing incentive for the guys) to keep her box clean so she can use it. She does to pee, but STILL poops on the floor. OK, behavioral issue, but I can NOT figure out what she's upset about!
I know she's old- and judging by the way she's walking she probably hurts. She'd benefit by losing a pound or two, but she doesn't like 'healthy' food (she won't touch Raven's kibble OR gushyfud) because she's been eating the cheap shiat stuff for so long.

She's even bitten her favorite human when he's been petting her...and his world-view does not allow him to understand that she still loves him, she just hurts, so stop petting me I SAID STOP IT CHOMP.
Now he doesn't want anything to do with her, and it makes me sad to see her sitting looking at his closed bedroom door, then turning to look at me, wanting me to advocate for her.

Guess I'm asking "What can I do to make her feel better so that she'll stop hurting and use her box, and quit biting people? "

Our GSD-Rottweiler mix, Annie, ate everything. Eeeeeverything. We're pretty sure she had a square butt, because she learned quickly that if she sat up, she would get something (treats, human food, any kind of munchie), and would often stay there for several minutes at a time, hoping that the longer she sat the more snacks she'd get. One night we (when I lived with my parents and sister, looooong ago) were making dinner and dad was chopping up veggies for salads. Like usual, she came into the kitchen, made eye contact with dad, and sat up. He was slicing up black olives and tossed one to her. That's another skill that she had: catching food out of mid-air. Never missed. So she snapped the olive out of its arc, tasted it, and spat it out, ptui! This was funny in itself, but Buster (our grey and white bicolor longhair at that time) had sauntered into the kitchen as well, for his own kitty reasons. In timing that could usually only be scripted, she bounced the olive right off of the top of his head and he fled in terror. I felt a bit bad at laughing at Buster for that, but oh the timing...

ThePuceGuardian: L33t Squirrel: Ooooooh, I haven't seen that one before. I've had their Double-Barrel Ale (this IS the Firestone Brewery out of Paso Robles, CA, right?) on tap before, and I try to snag it when I find it at the grocery store. Will look for that on my next grocery run.

That's the one. Their 16th Anniversary special release. Had it in my closet since last Christmas, stashed away against a day when I needed cheering up. Wasn't thrilled when I poured it, but it tastes nothing like it smells. The nose is all wet charcoal and oak, but flavor-wise it's straight chocolate and rum raisin. 13% ABV, too, so pretty hot. Hot but harmonious. I thought it would age well, and it seems I was right. I don't think there are any bottles left to be had, though; it's been months since I've seen any.

I'm an hour away from the brewery, I'll ask around. Who knows, I might get lucky.

So this morning before I hauled my butt to work (still there now and will be for a couple of hours), I checked in on the wee angry ones.  They had pooped A LOT during the night!  I think they had been holding back because they didn't want predators to know where they were.  I could be wrong, but I think I read that somewhere.

Anyways...I scooped the litter.  No problem.  Clump of kittens ignored me.  I refilled the water.  No problem.  Clump of kittens ignored me.  I refilled their food, and there was much hissing.

Still...it's progress!

I go and get 'oat berries' from the health food store and grow them like you would bean or alfafa sprouts.
Takes about 3 weeks to get a good strong 'forest' of tender green shoots. I've given pots of these as gifts to people with indoor pets, and they chow it down like goats!

Can this be given in food? Charlie is NOT a cat I would like to try to 'pill'!
I've explained this to Charlie's human as best I could, and told him to watch her tail...if she starts lashing it, then STOP PETTING HER RIGHT NOW...but don't push her away.

I don't know whether this will work; he takes in and understands what he chooses.

Guess I'm asking "What can I do to make her feel better so that she'll stop hurting and use her box, and quit biting people? "

A visit to the vet would be a good idea, if funds permit.

Is Charlie going just outside the litter box?  If yes, I would think behavior, possibly triggered by something physical.  If no, I would add another litter box, or several, where Charlie tends to have "accidents".

As for weight, is it possible to limit how much Charlie gets in a day?  Even if you can't get Charlie on a quality diet, perhaps you can limit how many calories she is getting per day in her current food.  Ask a vet how many calories she should be getting per day to get down to her optimum weight.

Is the biting new?  I'm assuming it is based on her favorite human rejecting her.  If Charlie has achy joints, that might be making her cranky.  Ask a vet, I think you can give cats the same joint suppliment people use.  I think one of Mom's cats is on glucosamine.  Mom tells me she thinks it is a wonderful cat treat.  (The cat thinks it is a cat treat, not my Mom.)

syzygy whizz: ferfer72: Kittens are safely ensconced in the guest bathroom.

I have Dosequin for my oldies (basically like Cosequin). These are powder capsules so all I have to do is open the capsule and sprinkle on the food. You can also sprinkle it into water as well. I got it at the vets but you might be able to get it at a pet store.
