I'll save all my outrage, not for the commercial - commercials always pander to the lowest common denominator after all, and are largely below contempt - but for Gail Dines, who argues that sexism and racism can't be directed against white men.

Look, I get it. I really do. You feel aggrieved and persecuted and you feel that white men hoarde all of the societal perks for themselves.

So it gives you a little frisson of excitement, a little tingling down your spine, to demean white men. It gives you a thrill to "speak truth to power" and tell white men that they have everything and have no right to complain. It satisfies you on some deeper level to just not care what white men think and to tell them that they are always in the wrong, and that they cannot, categorically, experience discrimination simply because that are white, and men.

Here's a news flash, though. White men get that exact same tingling, that wondefully warm feeling of "fark you, that's why" when they use a racist slur. They get the exact same feeling when they open their mouth and say some sexist shiat that is derogatory to every woman on the planet. It's the same sort of attitutude and feelings that have driven the past umpteen centuries of white conquest, colonialism, and expansion: "you're not like me, so fark you, that's why."

Congrats, Gail Dines, and everyone that thinks the same way that you do. You have become everything that you profess to hate.

The commercial is meh, but Gail Dines is one of the rare and special ladies that the c-word is reserved for. What a coont.

PsiChick: SearchN: Gail Dines, an expert on sexist images in the media and a professor of sociology and women's studies at Wheelock College in Boston, agrees. "It's not funny because it normalizes masculine behavior and makes a joke of it," she told Yahoo! Shine in a phone interview. "It's the reality of many women's lives, who get dinner ready, take care of the children, help with homework and do the housework, while the husbands are, in fact, sloth-like."

She almost made it through without slipping and showing the man hate card. So close. Maybe next time.

That's called the 'Mook' by advertisers. Yes, it exists IRL. She's stating fact, not opinion, and she's right; commercials like that train men to behave that way (along with a lot of other culture).  That's part of why it's sexist; it's encouraging that culture. Half the men I know act like this, and while I sympathize--you are what culture makes you--maybe we should change that culture so we aren't just farking men over.

Oh STFU. As if you know what a man acts like at home. The reason the men you know act like that is because the only ones who will go home with you are blacked out drunk and desperately looking for a wet hole to stick their dicks in at last call. They are lounging on the couch because they are hungover and pissed at themselves for going hogging on the previous night.

There are commercials that are sexist towards men. There are also commercials that are sexist towards women. There are people whose lives are negatively affected by sexism. There are also people who sit around on the internet all day, jerking off to their own perceived victimization, looking for things to get offended about, and competing with other like minded people over who can be the most outraged and who can find the worst thing to be upset about. Whoever is the saddest, maddest, most cruelly oppressed victim who cries the most about their horrible oppression and is most vicious towards anyone whose opinion varies even the tiniest hair-width from theirs wins.

Oh come on it's just a commercial! So what if they make commercials that portray men as dumb and lazy? Women are always portrayed as sex symbols anyway or house cleaners. The commercial was just poking fun at men, it's not a serious sermon about how all men are dumb and lazy, just like not every commercial is right about women always being sexy and smart. There are actually a lot of ugly and dumb females in the world. Just let the commercials be funny and don't take it seriously.

Sexism is a word with a very specific meaning, which is a certain group having more access than another group to the things that make life worth living, such as high wages and good housing."

So what have we learned?

Housekeeping appliances and chemicals, toilet seats and stoves are non gender specific items as to their operation.   Nobody likes a slob or a smug pain in the ass.  Humor is crucial to survival.  If there is any such thing as biologically specific traits that manifest in forms of behavior or world views, they probably aren't going to change.

Neither is the person you married.  They're going to be whoever they were before you married them.

And finally, there's a metric f*ckstack of money to be made by trolling the notions that all of the above is SEXIST !!1!  Carry on.

Flint Ironstag: Adverts do have a track record in the last decade or so of showing men as complete simpletons while the wife is the one who comes up with the answer/solution/explanation etc. But this advert is also stupid for not telling me what the product actually does. It spends most of the advert showing us a daydream of how a man could be improved but doesn't show us what the damn thing they are selling does to improve our TV.

As a rule of thumb if you remade the advert with the genders reversed would it be acceptable. Imagine this advert with the man imagining how his lazy, ugly, slobbish wife could be "improved". Would that be okay?

Not anymore.

Dr. Gail Dines overlooks something.  The preponderance of women performing in pornographic videos seem to be not only having a jolly good time, but I'm pretty sure the checks are clearing and nobody is holding a gun on them to have sex on camera.

Perhaps marketing's increasing focus on "social values" arises from decreasing differences between products.  Personally, I buy what a product does, not what a company does.

Um...

that seems the very definition of sexism and racism. I'm surprised to hear it coming from a sociology prof. I took both sociology and anthropology in university and we looked at sexist stereotypes towards men as well as women. Sociology especially seemed to be about trying to step out of what was considered the norm and thinking critically about stuff we take for granted.  While sexism and racism tends to suggest (or necessitate) a power hierarchy, (which I supose she is suggesting here) it shouldn't be the only way of looking at sexism.  I think it is perfectly acceptable and interesting to question gender stereotypes be they regarding men or women. Her view seems rather patronising actually.  I find it a very unfortunate position coming from a sociology professor.

I said prevalent, not unique. Elaborating on my music industry comments, the generic autotuned dance music around today could be said to be the same concept of disco, but made even easier to create through the technology now available. It's a similar concept to reality television: once networks realized that viewers would watch programs that didn't require professional actors or even screenwriters for the most part, it became part of the new norm.

It's easy to illustrate why many women hate pornography, using economics:
upload.wikimedia.org
Just rewrite this as "Suppose the price of sex rises from P1 to P2 because one of the inputs (women) rises in price This would cause men to have less sex, quantity decreasing from Q1 to Q2. For the {imperfect} substitute porn, the demand curve shifts out for all price levels, from D to D', leading to more porn consumed." And because it is a substitute, albeit an imperfect one, the person controlling the opportunities for sex cannot simply charge monopoly prices.

Q.E.D.
