SplittingAces: JonBuck: Mugato: Quasar: A relief? Every effing commercial involving a husband/wife dynamic portrays the husband as a clueless retard and the wife as the one who sighs and has to fix everything using X product.

That's also true of most sitcoms.

Thanks a lot, Tim Allen.

Ray Romano took that to another level.

I suspect the reason that the "men are idiots and women are mean" approach to comedy is so prevalent in recent sitcoms is that the networks were looking for the lowest common denominator and this what resulted. Give it another ten or twenty years and it will be normal for it to also include women hitting men in the balls, paving the way for "Ow, My Balls!" to become the new standard of comedy. It's kind of like record labels in the 70's hoping that disco would become the template for lowest common denominator music.

Mitt Romneys Tax Return: BarkingUnicorn: Mitt Romneys Tax Return: BarkingUnicorn: I think  Samsung miscalculated here.  Women make about 80-85% of U. S. household purchase decisions, but smart TV appliances are likely in the other 15% when there's a man in the household.

I think they assumed guys would find it amusing (after all, who doesn't like a fart joke, amirite?). Although I'm surprised so many men have such a low threshold for offense. Seriously, dudes, grow a pair.

Yeah, and women should also learn to take a joke, especially about their tiny, simple brains.

Am I supposed to be offended by your response?

Oh, hell no.  I'm just promoting gender equality.

Anayalator: FTFA:  Further, she argues, men, who are in power in our society, cannot legitimately cry sexism. "You can say [this ad is] prejudiced, in bad taste, insulting, not funny," she said. "But it can't be sexist. Just like a black person can't be racist. Sexism is a word with a very specific meaning, which is a certain group having more access than another group to the things that make life worth living, such as high wages and good housing."

Um...

Holy SHIAT.  As a woman, that whole paragraph there makes my blood boil.  And as a feminist that isn't psychotic enough to scream at men who open the door for me, "YOU'RE NOT HELPING."

bugontherug: 1) What really upsets her in the racism/sexism context is white men drawing false moral equivalences between racism by blacks against whites and sexism by women against men. Yes, black people can be racially prejudiced, and women can be sex-prejudiced. But she feels in both contexts that black on white racism/female on male sexism aren't real social problems. Blacks and women have less power to hurt whites/men because of their prejudices than whites/men have to hurt blacks/women because of theirs.

For what it's worth, I absolutely agree with her in the racism context. And 20 years ago I might have agreed with her in the sexism context too.

I agree with you, but the issue I take with her statement (and other using similar language) is that her terminology is taking a specific sub-category (institutionalized and/or systematic racism and sexism) and applying it as the definition for a more general term describing a from of discrimination or bigotry. In other words, it's too much like Orwellian newspeak for my liking and it's also poor communication in general.

The people who argue that women can't be sexist or minorities can't be racist are just trying to stake exclusive claims to the power that such accusations give to the accusers.

I didn't major in sociology, gender studies, or race studies. I've never even taken such a class. My undergraduate degree is from a small, very conservative university with very conservative student body. In 1992, the first choice in the Republican primary on my campus was Pat Buchanan. My course of studies included classes with classically ethnocentric names like "early western civilization," "modern western civilization," and "colonial American life."

It doesn't speak well of you that you equate trying to see the world from another's point of view with "playing psychologist." Your sort of egocentrism (an actual psychology term!) is a big part of what's wrong with America today.

Or not.  There hasn't been more than two or three good commercials in the last decade.

I'm assuming there was some sort of mass layoff back then, out with the knowledgeable people, in with the low paid brats.
At least that's all I can think of by way of an explanation.

SearchN: Gail Dines, an expert on sexist images in the media and a professor of sociology and women's studies at Wheelock College in Boston, agrees. "It's not funny because it normalizes masculine behavior and makes a joke of it," she told Yahoo! Shine in a phone interview. "It's the reality of many women's lives, who get dinner ready, take care of the children, help with homework and do the housework, while the husbands are, in fact, sloth-like."

She almost made it through without slipping and showing the man hate card. So close. Maybe next time.

That's called the 'Mook' by advertisers. Yes, it exists IRL. She's stating fact, not opinion, and she's right; commercials like that train men to behave that way (along with a lot of other culture).  That's part of why it's sexist; it's encouraging that culture. Half the men I know act like this, and while I sympathize--you are what culture makes you--maybe we should change that culture so we aren't just farking men over.

Replacing a general term with a specific term limits what can be potentially communicated and I view it as being in the same category as newspeak, just to a lesser degree. It's poor communication because the woman quoted in TFA is using what could be considered jargon definition of a term (I would also apply my criticism in this context - it's even bad as jargon) and expecting the general public to recognize this definition.

I have this theory that men, like women, are all pretty much individuals with a variety of learned behaviors and experiences that make up their modes of behavior and that trying to assign given behaviors to gender is a bit daft.  So, remember guys, when you're arguing with a woman and she says "Oh, you just hate women!", it's OK to say; "No, I just hate you."

Ordinarily I tend to agree with your posts, but I think you're focusing way too hard on men with this particular concept.  Do you not think women fall prey to this exact same situation? Men/husbands/boyfriends aren't the ones telling their women to buy $50 shampoo and wrinkle cream ya know.

Well, it can be helpful to understand how political ideologues distort language in the interest of advancing their goals. Feminists have decided that labels like "sexism" and "racism" have political power and have tried to redefine those terms so as to deny their opponents the use of them. Of course, anyone with a grain of intelligence can see it for the joke that it is.

Women? You want to be a pilot/surgeon/miner? Knock yourself out.
You want to be a stay at home mom? Go for it!
You want to start your own business or climb the corporate ladder? Be my quest.
