Stop trying to drag people who happily live in a 17th century theocratic sh*thole into the 21st century. They don't belong here and they'll only resent the effort.

I usually try to refrain from judging other cultures, but f*ck those assholes.

If there ever was a poster child for the dangers posed by the erosion of the separation of Church and State, it's Afghanistan.

Indeed

The only way to unite the Afghan people is to invade them. Once the invaders are gone they resort to happily fighting among themselves again, just as they did in the times of Alexander..

The place is a lost cause. Not one drop of American blood should have ever been shed there and not one dollar of taxpayer money ever spent there.  They're ungrateful and backwards. Let them remain in the.....well whatever century they are in. Not even in the first chapters of the Bible were women treated as bad as they are in Afghanistan, so we can't even say they are living in the 1st century or some BC centuries.

Ummm...the 17th Century was the middle of the Renaissance. Belgian peasants had a higher standard of living in 1650 than Afghan women do today.

Over the last 50 years it seems that the rest of us are being dragged back into the 17th century theocratic sh*thole that Alabam-ites would see as paradise.

Here's my attempt to start a meme.

You know when you're taking a huge dump, I mean a monster bowl-filler, and you flick your cigarette into the bowl and it lands on some poo that's sticking out of the water, instead of landing in the water itself?  That cigarette burns a little bit of that poop before it is extinguished.

The smoke from that burning poop is now known as "Afghani Incense"

Why are we there?  The only thing that they hate more than each other is us.

The U.S. should have never armed the rebels way back when the Soviets were trying to take Afghanistan. Should have let them fight the USSR on their own.

It didn't always used to be that way. Back in the 1950s, before the wars and terror, women were educated and worked alongside men. Kabul was a modern city and its culture was admired throughout the country.

\That's a low threshold, mind you.

And the soviets most likely would have won had we not intervened. They weren't as inclined to wage a PC, media-safe, liberal-friendly war as we are.

Oh GDI, fine, let's spend another few hundred million waiting for democracy to kick in.

They don't want it, they won't have it, just leave them alone, sheesh. Either draw a 34 kiloton line in the sand and be done with it or get the heck out...

If you are referring to Ayn Rand, no pretty much the exact opposite. Rand's ideas involved a minimum of government regulation or intrusion, and maximal personal responsibility.  Pretty much the 100% polar opposite of what the problem is here.   Yes, her atheist libertarianism is despised by lefties, but let's at least get the general inflammatory brushstrokes right to avoid ridicule.

Too bad the moderately repressive, secular governments were replaced by populist governments that catered to the religious majority and became even more repressive.

hopefully we'll never make similar mistakes again.

Can someone explain to me why we're still there? They've been this way for their entire history and our presence has done nothing but create more terrorists because we're occupying them and they don't want us there. Nothing at all has been accomplished, at least nothing long lasting or permanent, except they hate us more than the Russians at this point.

Ahhh, then the cold war happened. Too bad we didn't listen to Patton when he said we should just march on Moscow. Then again, it didn't work too well for the Germans. That march is more of a death ground for empires than Afghanistan ever was.

I doubt that. Very few countries are as hateable as the Russians.

Let's put it this way -- a lot of countries welcomed the Nazis, because it meant the Russians were leaving.

Some sections of the human population will never, ever cease to be anything but a plague upon the rest of the human population.

The entire middle East is an example of such.

I've had a similar idea.  I'd really like to see it offered.  As we pull out, we ask each woman "do you want to be educated?".  Anyone who says yes gets put on a plane.

I'm a fairly liberal dude.  I support gay marriage.  I think a woman should have a right to choose.  Welfare is a good thing for those who need it.  And we should have universal healthcare for all.  With that said, can't we just build a 50 foot high wall around this place (and may around some of its neighbors -- that means you Iran and Pakistan), lock all the savages who live there inside, and then throw away the key?

Damn, I thought my distrust for Russians was based on Rocky 4 but it appears the whole globe feels the same. I'm also scared to set foot in Russia, I'm too tan and I got curly hair. I hear it's super racist and a haven for neo-Nazis (which makes no sense since Nazi's killed so many Russians in WW2).
