Really? He went with the "Sergio's got plenty of black friends" defense?

I'm not sure whether the picture of Colbert with his token black friend, or the Jon Stewart "You're Not Helping" would be more appropriate here.

Leave it to Europe to willfully demonstrate on their own being at least a full century behind the times on race relations in comparison to North America.

They literally can't shut up can they? Chronic foot-in-mouth disease seems to be rampant.

I'd like to know where this sits on the "Facepalm" scale?

How can they get with the times when they're too busy throwing bananas and making monkey sounds at black players during soccer matches?

You almost have to laugh that he kicked it up a notch by turning it into the "Sergio's got plenty of colored friends" defense.

Fuzzy Zoeller did it better, Sergio.

Hell, Saxby Chambliss did it better.

Like we're supposed to believe Sergio Garcia has any friends in the first place.

Not sure why this is an issue.

If Woods would have said he wanted to have Garcia over for a "big ol' bowl of Paella", or  Guan Tianlang for Hot Pot, nobody would have blinked an eye.

Being that there is no cultural stereotype involving paella, your analogy sucks

FTFA: "All races play on the European Tour and that's how we're going to keep it."

O'Grady went on to add, "We have wops, spics, dagoes, frogs, krauts and even a couple of kikes, and we let all of them use the White Men's changing room."

Correct racial faux pas apology:

'I'm sorry.  Please forgive me for what I said and did. I'm sorry. I am flawed and fallible, but I promise to try to do better. I am so sorry.'

Just like with your wife and/or girlfriend(s), you don't have to understand; you just have be convincing.  Any nuance or specifics will just make it worse..

Yup.  With apologies, the less you say, the better.

Old, rich Englishman is not up to date with current politically correct terminology. News at 11.

And how is Sergio Garcia supposed to know that fried chicken has racist connotations ffs? African-Americans supposedly liking fried chicken is probably something he's vaguely heard of and thought he'd make a harmless joke about it, like saying you'd serve a German some brattwurst or a Frenchman some frogs legs. It was a faux pas made by a Spaniard who I'm sure didn't have a clue how "offensive" he was supposedly being.

How anyone (including black people) can muster up one single fark about stuff like this is beyond me, I've got more important things to worry about personally.

Probably because Spanish folk aren't overly sensitive biatches.  The day one of my black buddies tells me no when I offer them fried chicken, I'll stop thinking that black people like fried chicken.

Like crying to the media because someone pulled a club out of his bag when they weren't even swinging?  NO, surely no Spaniards are like that.

Or complaining about tee times, the weather, the condition of the greens, the size of the locker room at the Ryder Cup, or any of the million other things Sergio has whined about while failing to come close to living up to his potential.

I know this thread is dead, but Sergio Garcia has played in 251 PGA Tour events and made the cut 212 times.  Even if he flew in on Thursday morning and left on Sunday night, the dude has spent at least 3 years (cumulatively) just playing golf and we know damn well that he has spent more time here than that.  Stop acting like he is Tio Sergio who has only visited the states a couple of times.

Precisely. If he didn't know of the significance of "fried chicken", why mention it? If his knowledge of US culture were so shallow but he still wanted a put-down, he would have mentioned something quintessentially American such as burgers or hot dogs. And if it was intended as an insult, why mention any food at all?

"I'm sorry that something I did made you upset" is an anti-apology.
