How often does one feed a breast?

2013-05-23 02:50:41 PM
<i>"During the period of breast-feeding, the barium levels in teeth were higher," Arora says. "At weaning, the levels of barium in teeth started to drop." </i>

So... do I invest in a barium storage site, or a barium disposal site?

Just because people are dead, doesn't mean they're better. Dare I say the opposite?

Wellon Dowd: How often does one feed a breast?

All I know is that you never, ever feed them after midnight.

2013-05-23 02:51:37 PM
Well, ah.. we're still here, and the last one of them died out roughly 32,000 years ago... so I'm going to say that maybe--just maybe--we're doing it right.

2013-05-23 02:51:58 PM
Is that why we're still around and they're not?

2013-05-23 02:52:52 PM
Neanderthals did not go to school with a kid who breastfed until they were 7.

Memory can change the shape of a breast; it can change the color of a nipple. And memories can be distorted. They're just an interpretation, they're not a record, and they're irrelevant if you have cell phone pictures.

started weaning at 7 months (from the one tooth that was sampled) and finished by 15 months.

2013-05-23 02:54:11 PM
So they ween at 7 months?

Sounds about right, my daughter is only drinking her meals once a day now and she is at 9, we figure she'll be solid food by xmas

2013-05-23 02:55:05 PM
Hmmm... if they were doing it so right, why aren't they still around? (Mike Tyson not withstanding)

Nope.  Turns out they interbred with early humans and their DNA is present in folks of non-African descent.

According to the article the apparently they did the same as us, between 7 and 14 months.

How about not enough evidence to determine with complete accuracy.  It's an open question right now as to whether the DNA commonalities are there because humans and neandertals interbred, or because humans and neandertals share DNA from their MRCA.

We continually strive to be better because everyone holds us to a higher standard.

That's why. You not knowing that makes me sad.

Pre-modern humans tended to space children about three years apart. Since every other year was a famine year, they could probably only afford one infant at a time. By three the youngsters can be helping out around the home or farm in small ways as they can walk and follow simple instructions.

Chimpanzees and prehistoric humans also space children about three years apart. In good times, or if a particular community is thriving, it's possible to have children every second year or even every year. My genealogy, which no contains over 45,000 individuals, shows interesting patterns that a scientist could use to make and test all sorts of hypotheses:  what was the economy like in 1683? Do wars really lead to more sons? and so forth.

Weaning occurs when the next child is lined up to breast feed. Some nutty modern mothers who have trouble cutting the apron strings will breast feed for longer than three years. There's a Little Britain sketch about one who breast feeds her grown son. Farkers have seen cases of Mothers who breast feed their precious snowflakes at seven or eight.

But it's clear why and how humans developed early weaning: mother has work to do. She can't be breast-feeding several children at the same time. It just doesn't work that well.

With the bottle, of course, you could continue to breast feed longer or never really stop feeding the child cow's milk or whatever. But that's just crazy.

On a related subject, most human love affairs last about three years before the first cooling off or the end of the infatuation phase. The Seven Year Itch might be real, but this "Honey Moon" phase is even easier to observe in daily life around you.

Heck, even cults don't hold on to their converts much longer than three years, and those infamous or famous "homosexual conversions" seldom last longer than that. Human brains have a built in attention span that hasn't changed much in the last few hundred thousand years, or possibly the last few millions.

Three years is enough time to get almost any business or product up and running on its own legs, including children.

why don't you go and chase a herd of woolly tulips off a dike in order to feed your nomadic hunter-gatherer clan of bicycle enthusiasts?

One can draw too many conclusions from a limited study. This study on weaning also fits with Neanderthals having an early maturity:

I know there's some farkers out there that would get with a neanderthal if given the chance.  So I wouldn't write that off so quickly.  Some chance encounter in the moonlight.  A warm breeze causing loin cloths to flutter.
