I freaking hate Websense. Luckily we've complained enough and messed with it that it's been disabled for the past several weeks.

YoOjo: Mind blown

A few years ago there was an exhibit of Gregory  Barsamian's work here in Pittsburgh. It's 10 times trippier in real life. There were a couple of his pieces that I couldn't look at for more than a few seconds without getting dizzy.

Christ people, it's a strobe light....which is definitely not to say that the workmanship and engineering involved isn't totally impressive, but it's an absolutely ancient concept at this point, and if the majority of the public can't instantly grasp how a strobe light works with your eyes, and a moving object, then I guess I'm going to have to stat digging my bunker deeper than I'd originally planned. That goes double for all these motherfarkers who actually see the strobe and the object warming up too speed, and still can't understand what's going on. Do these folks also think that their TVs are full of tiny little people?

"Well, let's see. First the earth cooled. And then the dinosaurs came, but they got too big and fat, so they all died and they turned into oil. And then the Arabs came and they bought Mercedes Benzes. And Prince Charles started wearing all of Lady Di's clothes. I couldn't believe it. "

All I saw was epilepsy-inducing video salad caused by totally unrelated frequencies interfering and reinforcing each other:

Camera frame rate
Monitor refresh rate
Video player frame rate
Strobe frequency
Zoetrope angular velocity.

(it didn't blend)

/ I'll just order the soup next time.

You're right, you know? It's all just a strobe light, nothing else. No planning, no execution, no precision. Just slap a strobe light on something and it looks like this. We really should be ashamed that we wasted any time at all admiring this, since all we needed was a flashing light.

For the record: I certainly have no desire to stop you or anybody else from admiring it. I admire it. I tried to acknowledge the impressive workmanship and engineering before my first sentence was over. I would stare at that thing all day. However, it's also based firmly on concepts we all encountered in middle-school science class. By no means do I mean to disparage anybody for simply appreciating the obvious quality and thought put into this particular exhibit, I do mean to disparage those adults in the video (and I suppose a few in the thread) who don't understand the notion of moving images in general.

DC Metro has ads like this.  As your car moves along strobes flash the images outside of your window, and it looks like you're watching a car commercial that follows the train.  It's weird, but cool.  SCIENCE!

The Zoetrope at the Ghibli Museum will really blow your mind.  This is some video smuggled out as the museum prohibits filming inside.  I can't even describe how beautiful it is up close.
