Nice, but it's not as entertaining as Tim Hudson getting a homer off of Jesus Bryce Superstar's glove:

I liked how the color commentator says that you can't pitch to Cabrera there, even though the result was a four base error.

NuttierThanEver: Miggy is a freaking monster so far this year.

So far this year, he's ahead in the count when it's 0-2, in scoring position from the batter's box and picking up all of Prince's slack right now, which is a lot.

Cabrera leads the AL in RBI and average and is second in HR.  Mike Trout - not so much.  Miggy is on pace for back to back triple crowns.

Yes, but what's his WAR, UZR, POO and xRAY. That's what matters, not the fact that he's singlehandedly writing tickets for opposing pitchers to AAA.

It's disgusting that he added a HR and RBI to his total last night for that play.  MLB scorers suck.

Hint: His offensive WAR is very good, because hitting home runs is good for that.

His UZR, dWAR, and other defensive statistics are terrible, because he's an immobile tub being forced to play a position because two even more immobile tubs are blocking 1B/DH.

Ball never hit the ground, so it is a "home run" that would properly be scored a four base error.

Ayup.  First place by half a game despite handing their rival a home run.  Best team offense in baseball, and it's not particularly close when you consider their home park.

Rule 6.09(h):
Any fair fly ball is deflected by the fielder into the stands, or over the fence into foul territory, in which case the batter shall be entitled to advance to second base; but if deflected into the stands or over the fence in fair territory, the batter shall be entitled to a home run. However, should such a fair fly be deflected at a point less than 250 feet from home plate, the batter shall be entitled to two bases only.

I would love to see the bolded part of that rule come into play.  Can you imagine a manager going apeshiat because he thought it was 240 feet or 260 feet?

It would be more impressive to see a ball deflected over a wall in fair territory from 1-200 feet away without hitting the ground.

Terrible would be an understatement of the highest order. You know they're in huge trouble - defensively - when they're trying to hide Cabrera at 3B. But hey, defense doesn't really matter, right?

Yeah, and in May he's .243/.391/.414 with 2 HR's and 12 RBI's while striking out 23% of the time... hence the "right now".

In May Fielder is hitting .243 with 12 RBIs (including 7 in just 2 games) and 2 HRs., compared with .301, 27, and 7 in April.  He's gone 0-for in 4 of the last 10 games.

4NTLRZ: Terrible would be an understatement of the highest order. You know they're in huge trouble - defensively - when they're trying to hide Cabrera at 3B. But hey, defense doesn't really matter, right?

To put it simply, Detroit is dead last in baseball in team defensive efficiency:
Put a ball in play against the Tigers' defense (worst): .318 batting average.
Put a ball in play against the Royals' defense (median): .292 batting average.
Put a ball in play against the Cubs' defense (best): .266 batting average.

(If you adjust for the park, Minnesota is the worst defensive team.  Detroit's outfielders have the partial excuse of needing to patrol a lot of ground.  But being 29th is still bad.)

In related news, with Fielder and Cabrera manning the corners, we have the rarity of an AL team leading the majors in bunt hits allowed (11 hits in only 21 attempts).  Why speedy guys aren't dropping bunts down with regularity is puzzling.

Most of the starters are pretty good at fielding their position, but yeah, lay it down the lines and you're golden. You might even get a double out of it if Avila picks it up.

Seems like the bad defense is contagious. Even Torii Hunter is bombing some plays lately. Infante + Peralta aren't horrible, but the only + defender is on the DL (Jackson).

MichiganFTL: Even Torii Hunter is bombing some plays lately.

To be fair, he's 37 years old and his defense hasn't kept up with his reputation for a couple years.  His range has become below average for a RF-- about 1 play per 10 games fewer than the average AL RF over the past couple years, and that's including Mike Morse, Nelson Cruz, and Jose Bautistia as "defenders".

I actually like Bautista in rf. he won't go balls out on sinking liners but he wisely plays everything conservatively. That in tandem with his arm means nobody is getting those accidental triples that never get written down as errors.

That being said, he totally farked up on a liner over his head this week.

Ron Luciano claimed in his first book that a hard line drive once deflected off the glove of a leaping Graig Nettles at 3B and went over the outfield wall for a home run.  I think the batter was Tony Oliva, but I might be wrong.

Hunter is dropping very catchable balls, for sure, but worse is his airmailing throws to home plate. Dude needs to realize he's not going to throw every runner out at home.
