(WGAL 8)   You've lost faith in our systems, witnessed a parade of lies and deceit. So you look for comfort, a friend in this darkest hour - a nice bowl of ice cream. There's just one problem. Ice cream is also a lie. A damnable lie   (wgal.com) divider line 250

Proper use of the sad tag, subby. That is just pathetic and nasty.

"They have changed the ingredients and instead of using cream, they are using corn syrup," said Bach.

Somehow I doubt that they altered the recipe by swapping cream for corn syrup. Those two things do not function similarly.

The new Breyers has a texture that is almost, but not entirely unlike ice cream. Gimmie a chunk of Haagen Dazs strawberry to chew on any day.

I remember back in the 80s when Breyer's ran commercials with people trying to read the ingredients of competitors "frozen dairy desserts" as opposed to the simple list of ingredients on Breyer's. Unilever changed all that.

Ever make home made ice cream before? It's delicious. I bought a ice cream maker attachment for my Kitchen Aid mixer (it was not cheap, but totally worth it), and have been going nuts with it ever since; butter pecan, chocolate and mint ice cream, vanilla (with real vanilla beans!), peach, chocolate.

Now I want some ice cream.

Yep.  The original Breyer's was awesome and tasted just like homemade.

This is why I'm picky about brands now.

Haagen Daas is expensive, but at least it's real ice cream. A few other brands are real ice cream as well, but I believe Haagen Daas is the purest. At any rate, I read before I buy now.

If you're paying less than $4 for a gallon of "ice cream" you shouldn't be shocked by this.

2013-05-23 11:58:20 AM
This is old news, just like orange juice is orange drink when not really made of oranges.

Look for the words frozen desert.

2013-05-23 11:58:29 AM
Ug. This has been making the Facebook rounds for a while, and like everything forwarded on Facebook, it's a hysterical dumbing down of reality. Like it says in Page 2 of the article (yes, there is a page 2), Breyer's has not quietly switched this new Frozen Dessert for ice cream and let's see if anyone notices. It's a separate product. You can still get Breyer's Ice Cream on the same shelf. You'll only get "duped" if you're an idiot who doesn't read labels.

The ads with sound-effects man Fred Newman were most memorable

But yeah, Breyers was the best until they got bought out, and now them and everyone else not only added stuff to save money, the container sizes aren't even half-gallons anymore.

i haven't had breyers in a long time, because blue bell is awesome and similarly priced. but i used to get breyers often, and it was good. if i noticed it was different, and especially if i noticed it was no longer "ice cream", without there being some sort of official advertising/signage/etc, i'd be really pissed.

i LOVE ice cream. if i want to go cheap and risk the quality, i will go for a store/generic brand and take what i get for the cheaper price...even "ice milk" and such is usually pretty good on the cheap.

but there's not a big brand that compares to blue bell, without paying a good deal more for b&j or haagggaaannnn daaazzz (never knew how to spell that)

or if i'm out with the family, braums. braums is incredible, and a LOT cheaper than other premium ice cream places like coldstone and marble slab!

Most flavor of Breyers have not been ice cream for quite a while. I stopped buying it over a year ago after I notice the flavor and especially the texture had changed.

2013-05-23 12:00:47 PM
TFA: "But Bach does not like the way Breyers went about making the change. She knows that consumers are creatures of habit and says no customer will notice the change on the label."

You see, she and her eight-year-old are smart.  It's the other 6 billion of us who are dumb.

blatz514: Ice cream is gross.  Fake or not.

Absolutely. The only reason people can eat it is because it's frozen and they can't taste it properly. Taste buds get very muted on extremely cold items. Let a bowl of ice cream melt to room temp and have a honest taste of what you're eating when you can actually taste it. It's absolutely hideous.

If you biatch about it to your local news affiliate's consumer specialist, yes.

2013-05-23 12:03:25 PM
The most telling line of the article is at the very end: "As for the price, it's exactly the same."
The manufacturer clearly had cheaper ingredients rather than "consumer demand for a smoother texture" in mind.
