If not they'll have a tough roe to hoe.

The concept of a possession limit confuses me - that seems to suggest that if your daily limit AND possession limit is 5 fish, you take em home, clean em and freeze em - you're not allowed to go fishing again until you eat some of the 5 in your freezer.  But if you want to eat 5 fish ever day you're free to do so.

My god, have the death panels started?

Should have spent the extra bucks and got the commercial fisherman licenses instead.

Is anyone on FARK a fisherman? I amy be the only one, I dunno, but this story bothers me. If there is another fisherman nearby, have him read the names of the accused and I promise he has seen this before. I know I have.

Yup.  If you eat 'em, you're good.  There's a daily limit, and a total possession limit.  I think it is intended to prevent unlimited harvesting, unless you're consuming them.  I get it, but it seems weird that they can come and look in your freezer though.

I wonder what they are going to do with that much fish. You can't eat them your self or it would make you sick. Sell them? But they so many were in their freezer why not sell them ever hundred they get. Something else is happening.

Usually for bass you just use a shiny spinning lure. Bass school in large numbers so they were probably snagging.

That's because you're too honest.  What you have to understand about fishermen is that they are the scummiest, dirtbag, lying, cheating, short-sighted, self-centered and downright shameless people you'll ever meet.  The exceptions apply like Fark's rule of cops, where 99% give the other 1% a bad name.  And they all think that we're still in the days of 1500 years ago when every body of water was so stocked with fish you could just reach in and grab them if not for the Big Bad Gummint, rather than precisely the reason why our waters are a dangerously depleted resource.

Imagine if there wasn't a possession limit.  Say you can only catch 25 fish a day, but then someone's seen trying to sell a pile of about 500 fish.  The first thing they're going to say when they're caught red-handed with a crapton of illegally caught fish is, "Aw, shucks, we didn't fish those today; we only caught 25.  This is our stash we've saved up over weeks!"  Or, "We didn't catch these; we bought 'em and just reselling them.  If they were illegal, you'd better ask around."  Or any number of a hundred blatant lies that are just plausible enough to put the burden of proof on law enforcement, because that's all they need to do.  It doesn't really matter that no one believes their bullshiat.  If a fish is in an icebox it's certainly possible to tell how old it is, but more trouble than it's worth when just about every damn fisherman is a lying scumbag.

So, a possession law takes the burden of proof away from law enforcement and back on the fishermen.  Makes the job of dealing with these people a lot easier.
"Aw, shucks, we didn't catch those --"
"I don't care.  It's illegal to have that many fish anyway."

It takes going about that far to keep our waters from being picked clean.

I fish weekly... but everything is catch and release.  I have a major problem with people taking more game than is allowed.  The limits are there to ensure a healthy population.  Smart outdoorsmen understand this concept and appreciate it.  Personally, I think they should get some jail time.  Same with people that harvest deer out of season or take more than the limit.  These are managed resources that can't be pillaged or they won't exist in the future.

They probably voted for Obama.  ;-)

It is little surprise to me that they can't believe they would ever be held responsible.
After all, they were merely fishermen.

That's why the Seafood Combo Platter with Fried Rice is such a good deal.

Around here the DNR don't bother checking licenses for non-English speaking immigrants.  I asked a DNR guy why, he said "They don't have ID, they give a fake name for the ticket, and don't show up for court, so what's the point?"

Same thing here in the Great Lakes area around Toronto too.  East Asian people just seem to think that the world's fish are their for the taking however they feel like doing it.

I'm trying to figure out their math.

128 fresh
218 whole
314 fish worth of fillets (628/2)
= 660 fish
posession limit = 50 (per person, I assume)
660 - 100 = 560 fish over the limit.

I'm a fisherman. I hadn't even clicked on the article and told my wife I bet they were southeast Asian. No idea what it is about southeast Asians, but extreme overharvest is very common in that community. On multiple occasions, I've gone out at 2 or 3AM during the pre-spawn and see three or four of them on shore with 6 or 7 coolers full of fish. It's insane. Anyway, there's my racist comment for the day. Flame away.

My first thought too. Didn't matter if it was California or Minnesota, whenever I read a fish-poaching story it always seemed to involve SE Asians.

My then-girlfriend used to go clamming at low tide on the California coast. We'd come back covered in mud from head to toe, laughing our asses off and lucky to get enough for dinner. We had fun, but we sucked at it. While we were out there, we'd see whole families of Vietnamese; Mom, Dad, kids, Grandma and Grandpa out there. They'd be there 10 minutes and have full buckets of clams. And the only mud they'd have on them would be their hands and feet.

/oh yeah, forgot to flame you
//what the hell is a senoy? :)
