McMichael was WCW. And if you are gonna go down that road, how can ye forget GOLDBERG?

And fark you, subs, for implying that Ahmed Johnson is anything but awesome

Actually, Mongo first appeared in pro wrestling in the WWF as part of LT's posse at Wrestlemania XI.

And the amount of ex-football player hits is much smaller than the misses.

JR has a hard-on for "real" athletes, in much the same way Vince has a hard-on for steroid freaks.

My point exactly.  And The Rock probably had an NFL tryout or two; he played ball @ Miami.

WWE has made a significant investment in trying to develop younger talent that can follow in the footsteps of those legends. The company recently announced plans to build a 26,000 square-foot training center in Orlando, Fla., where its developmental program will be based.

Super.  Like we're not cheesy and fake enough here.

Ahmed Johnson actually worked fairly well as a face. He only failed when they tried to make him a heel

Goldberg, The Rock, Brock Lesnar...I'm sure there were more.

Mr Wonderful Paul Orndorff was a drafted by the Saints, failed physicals for them and Chiefs.  He then played in the WFL before becoming a wrestler.

bulldg4life: Goldberg, The Rock, Brock Lesnar...I'm sure there were more.

Rock was a college ball player, Lesnar did the NFL thing AFTER his first WWE run...

I'll give you Goldberg, Bronko Nagurski, and Big Cat Ernie Ladd.

2013-05-23 10:02:55 AM
NFL Hall of Famer Bronko Nagurski was a two-time NWA World champion.

Lawrence Taylor's match was fairly watchable, but that's mostly a credit to Bam Bam Bigelo's determination to make LT look good for the good of the company.

There's nothing wrong with trying to get former football players to try their hands at pro wrestling. Solid athletes who are used to insane schedules and tons of training time means they've already got some of the important skills.

It worked for Leon White, Ron Simmons, The Rock, and a ton of others.

Ahmed Johnson wasn't that bad.

I think I remember (I haven't watched wrestling since the early 90s) that although Johnson was liked by fans, other wrestlers hated him because he injured them regularly.

For a company that likes to retread history ALL THE TIME you'd figure they would want to revisit the last time they had a training facility that actually worked.  When Jim Cornette ran OVW, it produced Kurt Angle, Brock Lesnar, Randy Orton, Batista, John Cena, and probably a whole bunch of other guys I'm forgetting.

This idea sounds more like the WCW power plant.

Yay, just what the company needs: even FEWER people who know how to wrestle! Get ready for more restholds and botches!!!

I don't follow wrestling at all.  But when I used to live down the street from Universal (this was even before they added Islands of Adventure and CityWalk), I could have sworn there was some sort of pro wrestling facility right there on the same property.  Or an adjoining one.  Maybe that was WCW?

The extent of my knowledge or interest in wrestling is my panda t-shirt I got for Christmas.

The WWE wants to recruit cut NFL players, since that strategy worked so well in the past with guys like Steve McMichael, Kevin Greene, Lawrence Taylor, Ahmed Johnson, and Heidenreich so HHH can bury them and prove who the real athlete is.

Add Wahoo McDaniel to the list of successes.

Whatever they try the failure rate is going to be extremely high, because the people in charge have no idea how to train and promote anymore.

Was this around 1993 in Orlando? Because WCW did tape shows there that year. They're well known because they would shoot the TV shows THREE MONTHS at a time, so anyone who went to the taping would know about all storylines and title changes for the next three months. And it bit them in the ass more than once when title holders would get injured and unable to wrestle before they were scheduled to drop their title (Pillman comes to mind).

Little bit after.  I lived in that neighborhood roughly from '97 - 2005.  Not important.  Maybe it was a touring show or something.

IIRC, they did the Disney tapings at Orlando again in '94.

Also, the tapings for Worldwide were done exclusively at Universal from '96 or '97 on.

No NFL, he tried out for the Calgary Stampeders in the CFL but got cut during training camp.

"WWE wants to recruit football players Brain."

"That's a smart move Monsoon."

"Why is that?"

"Football players are so concussed and desperate after their playing days, they'll sign almost any contract."

"Brain...."

"I bet you can get Chad Johnson for a box of Snickers bars right now!"

"WILL YOU STOP?"

Pretty much that.  Back in the day you actually had guys that could make an ex-footballer a decent worker.  Now?  I highly doubt that.
