Her son Adrian, 22, was on his balcony when he got into a heated argument with four or five noisy bar patrons.
"They told me 'What are you gonna do? Come down,'" he said. "Stupidly, I went down. They spoke to me within an inch of my face, I pushed them and a fight started."

Next time, teach your son not to start unnecessary fights where he's outnumbered 5-1 against drunken hooligans.

An ounce of prevention and all that.

If only the attackers had guns, and the mother had a gun and the son had a gun, all this would never have happened.

Guns are like locks: they only prevent honest people from acting foolish, while those more inclinced to say 'fark the law' will do whatever they want.

Also: The cops arrested the mom for defending her (stupid) son? Hell, here in the states they arrest everyone possibly involved in anything physical.

The hell's going on up there?

If anything should be banned/restricted, it's being French.

The son sounds like a real moron.  If you're going to argue with belligerent bar patrons, then don't come down to meet them.  If you're not looking to fight, then don't shove them around.  If you can't take on give guys at once, then don't... well, just don't.

Sounds like the police are trying to figure out if he deserved a whuppin'.

Also... don't mess with french chicks. Great in the sack but you dealin' with some serious cray cray there, son.

Montreal is also in a perpetual state of mini riots. The cops just kind of pick and choose when they feel like doing their job. You can't really blame them though because to keep things sane would require 1:1 citizen/cop ratio. They just kind of roll up, watch the chaos and extract the ultra assholes if they don't chill out. It's very strange to watch.

Not to my knowledge, no.

I get that boys do stupid things (actually, so do girls, just in a different way) but taking on 5 drunken, loudmouth idiots just seems like sticking a fork in an electrical outlet and being surprised about being electrocuted.

It just seems like behaviour that flies in the face of human survival. If testosterone has such an impact on risk perception and dangerous behaviour it's somewhat amazing we've survived as a species all this time.

Well, boys will be boys and it would be beneficial to accept that as a fact of life.  It's just how they're wired.  They have succeded with much gusto in perpetuating our 'species' so I don't think we should anticipate any population shortage in the foreseeable future.

To be fair, it's not *just* the testosterone. I imagine part of it comes from simple minded people being influenced by fiction believing they can overcome any odds, blah blah blah.

Could also be the 'you just woke me up at midnight or later' pissed-off-ed-ness. I've confronted loud neighbors who partied too loud on a work night. But then i'm 6'4 and built like Penn Jillette. And I did the confronting wearing just boxers and a pissed off roaring voice.

I find the slightly batshiat crazy approach works usually. Civilized people are so easily freaked.

It sounds like it was one on one (other dudes staying out of it) and the kid initiated the confrontation verbally, escalated it by going downstairs then assaulted the guy by pushing him. He's no "victim".

It was a metaphor. With all the constant partying and debauchery that goes on in the city it would be like living at a strip club which is not a very healthy lifestyle.

Dude... if you hate it so much why don't you move to one of the smaller towns? You'd save a TON on rent. Enough to buy/rent a car to get into the city if you need to for work/school. Not trying to be snarky. It's a rough place but it is fun to visit. Haven't been for years and desperately want to make a specific trip just for the jazz festival. I'd rather LIVE in Quebec City though. Little less frightening and I love the old city.

Ah the old Canuckian anti French bigotry. Don't be mad just because they refuse to be forced to work two jobs 60 hours a week for peanuts, get raped on housing costs and like a little freedom/culture. It's a messed up place but the rest of Canada could learn something from them about enjoying life a little and not always doing exactly what the government tells you to.

Jobs here are stagnant, and I'm continually amazed by the people boasting about their 40k$ salary while paying a mortgage, taxes, more taxes, condo fees, insurance, more taxes again, to live in a city with garbage-filled streets. They have no money at the end of the month.

Don't be mad just because they refuse to be forced to work two jobs 60 hours a week for peanuts, get raped on housing costs and like a little freedom/culture. It's a messed up place but the rest of Canada could learn something from them about enjoying life a little and not always doing exactly what the government tells you to.

How do you not get raped on housing costs? Rent might still be rather cheap in Montreal, but housing is freaking as expensive as any other big city in Canada.

And it's hard to enjoy life a little, when you are making minimum wage, regardless of your qualifications, because Quebecers only hire other frogs for anything that has the apperance of a professional job. Even though those professional jobs don't make more than 40k as somebody already mentioned.

The bigotry they bring it on themselves... the only thing I need to learn from Quebec, is their farking date of separation. Leave the union already!

I'm planning on visiting Montreal this Summer.  So, I'm getting a kick.

2013-05-23 09:50:38 AM

Quantum Apostrophe: dr-shotgun: Having said that, no matter their reason for being in Montreal, the streets there are filled with some absolutely remarkable eye candy.

Ah, yes, look but don't touch if you're over 25. It's a very conservative place for a city with such a reputation. And the restaurants ain't all that either. Like you can't get good food anywhere else on the planet?

prodigyking: Out West. Found the love of my life, incresed income by five times, bought house, have a newborne, and have been able to travel the world since I left.

Sounds good to be you!

prodigyking: I am certain that if I was still working in Montreal I would still be scraping for dollars to come up with the rent money every month.

Jobs here are stagnant, and I'm continually amazed by the people boasting about their 40k$ salary while paying a mortgage, taxes, more taxes, condo fees, insurance, more taxes again, to live in a city with garbage-filled streets. They have no money at the end of the month.

An African colleague of mine once remarked that in African countries they kill your body, but in Canada they kill your spirit.

Why don't you just move to Tronno and be done with it, or are you just too fond of biatchin' about silly things?

Gotta love a thread about a mother defending her son that turns into tired, Quebec-bashing hyperbole. Stay classy, Anglos! /thumbsup

So your hate is so seething you'd tear the country apart out of spite. Classy. Do you really think that Canada would be a better place with a huge chunk of it (which I might add is directly in between main shipping ports and the rest of the country) missing? Lookit, you didn't like it, ya moved, now you're happy. WTF is the problem? Some people love New York, others hate it. Same thing. You just butthurt 'cause the ladies wouldn't put out for you too?

And yes, they can be very insular but if you make an EFFORT to appreciate their culture most of them will warm up. Did you even try to learn to speak French while you were there? My French sucks but as soon as I at least made a fumbling attempt to communicate in their language they would generally switch to English and be more than friendly/helpful.

lulz

The way I look at it is if I had people coming up to me every day asking me for directions in Chinese I would get pretty damned annoyed after a while too. North Americans just aren't used to being places where English isn't the primary language and get all entitlement butthurt about it. Quebec is a VERY different place than most of the continent. This is a good thing. It means you can take a vacation and feel like you're in a different country without the cost of going overseas. The rest of Canada is too similar to the US to get that kind of contrast. You might as well just go visit Maine or Washington (state).

Are you posting from the 70's? Polls have shown a consistent decline in support for separation over the past 30 years. It's over, man. The current population just don't want it despite what a few angry old white guys squawk about. And really the rest of the country should be brave enough to stand up and take what's rightfully theirs but instead they just roll over and let the federal and provincial governments mug them while services get cut.

I suspect it's as bad anywhere else, but at least other places don't pretend to world-class status. Montreal is world class nothing IMO.

miss diminutive: Capo Del Bandito: miss diminutive: I don't think you need to get beat up to learn that lesson. I've never been in a fight and even I know that taking on 5 people on your own is asking for trouble.

Obviously you've never been a teenage boy before. Testosterone and the 'i'm invincible' mentality tends to warp perception.

That and lots of guys tend to do stupid shiat even if they're told different because they're convinced they can be the underdog or some such rot.

The prevailing theory I've heard is that men, in the eyes of evolution, are expendable. Women are more inclined to take care of the kids, since, y'know, they had them in their bodies for nine months, so men need to fark and that's it. Thus, testosterone.

/It sounds like a theory that would make sense in terms of  social evolution, though; we train men to fight and die, at least in the West, because there's dangerous shiat out there, someone's gotta take care of it, and if you pump up a guy's testosterone and tell him to do stupid shiat, you get defenders and babies, so society survives, and the women can actually run the place.
//Facepalm-worthy, but it's been working for several thousand generations...

Well if that is indeed true then good for you but you have to realize that's not what happens in many cases. The Anglo/Franco sh*t has a long history and the animosity is self perpetuating. Like Jews and Muslims being pissy with each over millenia old feuds. If people just stopped participating in it it would stop but everyone's gotta get the last word in so it doesn't.

Very sad. Can I recommend maybe you just forget about it and enjoy your new life? The things you have said here certainly don't help Quebecer's attitudes toward outsiders which then obviously effect outsider's views of Quebecers. Done and done!

It's the inital comments on this thread that brought back memories of my years in Mon-real. It's also the way that Quebec manages to make its way into national news about how they want everything for free without contributing to the union that's kind of annoying. It's the non-stop conversation about equalization payments flowing to Quebec and being mismanaged by the most corrupt provinical government in Canada. It's also the new generation of shiat-stains that they are raising, rioting for months and torching the subway, over the great injustice of paying tuition that concerns me gravely.

/Otherwise everything else is peachy over here

It's not like I went around Montreal screaming frogs every day... I really tried to make a good life over there. I tried really hard. How can the same person perform so much better in the same country a few thousand km away, by doing things the same way? Must be the environment that's suffocating..

This is just an endearing term I have taken a liking to, after I left, anyways...

/embrace you froginess, it really is a cute animal if you think about it...

prodigyking: here to help: Very sad. Can I recommend maybe you just forget about it and enjoy your new life?

Done and done!

It's the inital comments on this thread that brought back memories of my years in Mon-real. It's also the way that Quebec manages to make its way into national news about how they want everything for free without contributing to the union that's kind of annoying. It's the non-stop conversation about equalization payments flowing to Quebec and being mismanaged by the most corrupt provinical government in Canada. It's also the new generation of shiat-stains that they are raising, rioting for months and torching the subway, over the great injustice of paying tuition that concerns me gravely.

/Otherwise everything else is peachy over here
//have a beer (La Find Du Monde) on me!

Good stuff. I will re-emphasize that I wouldn't really want to live there either until they get the corruption and violent crime down. However the students thing I can kind of respect (except for the violence). Gotta keep tuitions down and personally I'd like to see higher education, at least some of the more general stuff, paid for. A HS diploma just doesn't do what it used to so it makes sense to treat it like other public education efforts. In fact they should probably roll those things into the HS curriculum even if they have to tack on two years of school for everyone. I mean that'd be nice for Canada but it's more needed in the US amongst other things like healthcare investments (free check ups and preventative medicine saves a SH*TLOAD of money in the long run). Those are worthy investments. Offensive wars in countries that aren't actually a threat to the mainland US and tax breaks for despicably wealthy people... not so much.

Salud!

If you learn one thing in life, it should be to never mess with a Quebecois woman -- they're all kinds of stabby when provoked.

Je me souviens!

Just read this whole thread. Got to the bottom and it had been so long since anyone had mentioned the original topic II had to go back to the top to figure out wtf the subject was.

In other words, the only thing I took from this was that Canadians are a bunch of whiny losers no matter what province they live in. Way to go guys.
