Didn't the first double amputee just finish climbing earlier this week?

What's with all these handicapped people climbing Everest all of a sudden?

2013-05-23 07:29:30 AM
But is she hot?

2013-05-23 07:29:46 AM
To be fair, she had a leg up on the competition.

Everest is basically a theme park ride at this point. If you hire enough sherpas, you could be carried to the top on a royal litter.

Advances in adaptive technology have enabled us to do things that weren't possible in the past. Everest has long been considered the pinnacle testing the limits of human endurance so it makes for an obvious goal.

/won't climb Everest anytime soon.

This is great for her and all, but wake me up when someone goes up there just to bring down a hefty bag full of trash (and/or a dead body).

At best, she'll get to the top.

At worst, her frozen body will serve as a landmark to future runners. "Take a left turn at One-Leg." Serving humanity in death better than she ever could in life.

This.   Everyone should read "High Crimes" by Michael Kodas.  The whole Everest industry is disgusting.  I have little to no respect for anyone climbing it.

Everyone with maladies from hangnails to missing limbs is rushing there way up to the top to be the "first X".  This way they can eke out a small living on sponsorships and corporate speaking events.

I'm reading "Into Thin Air" at the moment, so I'm getting a kick, etc. etc.

They finally got around to painting the disabled parking spaces and adding a wheelchair ramp last month.

I'm trying to imagine how many switch backs you would need to get a 1:12 slope all the way up there.

Technically hasn't she already had her final leg?

Does anyone know if she used to work for Obama? Just wondering because of the way she was thrown under the train.

It depends on the mountain.  Summit's good and summit's bad.

One of my favorite Taos ski patrol guys, Dave Hahn, just made his 15th Everest summit, more than any non-sherpa.

Except that's becoming so ho-hum now. Their 15 minutes are quickly getting shorted to 1 minute. Just this week some 80 year old Japanese man. Ugh. Everst is a tourist trap now and the sherpas are taking people up by the hundreds at a time.

Look up list of people who have died on Mt. Everest. This year alone, so far, 9 people have died. Two died on May 21st. One on May 17. I've known for a number of years that the Climb is the world's most dangerous tourist attraction and the greedy industry does little to protect people.

High Crimes. Ordered.

From what I have read, in terms of difficulty, other mountains like Denali are harder/more challenging.

The highest mountains on the seven continents
High crimes and Into Thin Air I both good books
