This is both smart and funny. I've ruled in favor of Pedestrian before in Pedestrian v. Bike (remember that cyclist in San Fran that killed some pedestrian or something?), but I'm thinking the Car is clearly the dumbass in this case.

My Verdict: Car will pay for new bike, keep job. Being a dumbass for a moment isn't worth Internet justice (patent pending) and losing your job over it. If you call for people to lose their jobs for silly things over and over, it'll be your turn before too long. Everyone is a dumbass eventually.

Some folks find it amusing to 'buzz' cyclists in an attempt to scare them or make them fall or whatever.

Last week I was biking into work, when I heard a large engine vehicle gun his engine behind me. Better safe than sorry, I moved off to the right behind a pick-up truck that was parked at the right side of the road, and sure enough an F-150 blew about 2 inches past my left handlebar.

Well, my little maneuver must have caused him to miscalculate, because he plowed into the side of the pickup that I ducked behind, taking his own mirror off, before backing up and fleeing the scene.

The old dude who owned the pickup was standing on his porch when it happened. He was shocked at first, but there wasn't too much if any damage to his truck so he wasn't too pissed. I apologized anyway, and he laughed it off saying, "hey, better my truck than your ass".

Instant karma, baby.

Jaywalkers and cyclists. I always wonder if they think the little white lines on the road are going to magically stop any cars barreling at them just because they technically have the right of way. Especially the jaywalkers. Just because you technically have the right of way in a crosswalk that doesn't mean my car can stop from 25 mph in 5 feet or less because you decided to walk in front of it.

/ this comment had very little to do with the TFA

Um, you do know that they aren't jaywalkers if they are in the crosswalk with the right of way, right?

Or do they just not have any driving instruction requirement whatsoever where you live?

Nooo, I didn't get a look at the driver, because I was in shock, and in seconds he was gone. He was driving a white F150. Given the neighborhood, he was probably a black guy, and the old dude on his porch was a creole.

Why are you bothering me anyway if you think I am full of shiat? Go away now. Shoo.

I had a bicyclist flip me off and swear at me?  Why.  Because I didn't realize he was going to run a red light, and dared to enter an intersection when I had right of way.  I guess I forgot that if you're "clipped in" means you don't have to follow the traffic lights at busy intersections.

/Just to be clear, he ran the light AFTER I had legally entered and crossed nearly half the intersection.
//I don't hate all cyclists, but damn are there a lot of assholes on bikes.

2013-05-22 07:25:46 PM

titwrench: You know the little red hand light means something different than the little white walking guy light right?

Actually, in PA, stupid people who ignore the light but do it in a crosswalk still technically have the right of way. Apparently the little white lines means you don't have to enough brains in your head to know that getting hit by a two ton chunk of rolling steel isn't going to end well.

Fortunately, you won't actually get in trouble if you hit them because it's still their fault, but, technically, and stupidly, they still have right of way.

2013-05-22 07:26:00 PM
As a cyclist, I obey all traffic laws. I stop at all stop signs and traffic signals when they are red, I signal all turns and I yield right of way when required to do so. I keep to the right side of the road as much as possible, unless dodging a substantial obstacle, to allow motorists to pass me.

I have, nonetheless, nearly been struck by motorists who ignored and drove through stop signs. Since then, I have installed an air horn. Thus far, I have not had cause to make use of it.

Should more drastic measures be required, I do possess a device capable of producing a louder noise, but legally I must experience a reasonable fear of imminent grievous bodily injury or death to use it.

A lot of the incidents I have on my bike (all minor, thankfully) are with assholes in a huge pickup truck. Realistically, who drives a farking monster-sized pickup truck to their office job? On average, it's an asshole with a small penis IMHO and a hard-on for dicking around with people.

"We are taking the incidents very seriously. A full and detailed investigation will be carried out and appropriate action taken. We have already spoken to Norfolk police."

It's a good thing it wasn't the Suffolk police.
