Ford has a total lack of self awareness and self reflection.
As the result of his father's hard work he's never had to work a day in his life. He's never had to earn a living because he was born into privilege. It's all been handed to him. But he would not even recognize this.

Instead, he's a conservative. His type of conservativism is mean spirited, judgmental and spiteful. It's the type of conservatism that criticizes the less fortunate as being authors of their own misfortune without any reflection as what benefits he may have enjoyed that allowed him to avoid a similar fate.

Whether bringing him down is worth $200,000.00 is questionable. I will say that because of what he's said and what he professes to stand for, if he has smoked crack, they should nail his ass to the wall. That's about as much compassion as he deserves.

GavinTheAlmighty: Note that Ford has been very,  very careful not to say that the video doesn't exist; only that the allegations are "ridiculous". OF farkING COURSE they're ridiculous.  The mayor of the fourth-largest city in North America is allegedly a crackhead.  That's crazy-ridiculous!  But it doesn't make it false.  Things can be both ridiculous and true.

I haven't contributed anything, not because I have a problem with giving them money (I do, but the alternatives of them holding onto the videotape and therefore being able to blackmail the mayor are worse) but because we don't know for certain if $200K is the confirmed asking price or if it's just an arbitrary number that they're going to use to negotiate.  We also don't know if the video still exists - these are crack dealers we're talking about, not exactly a paragon of business integrity and intelligence.

The video existed for sure - that's why Ford hasn't sued anyone into oblivion yet, because he knows that if he does, the video can be produced as evidence.  But does it still exist now?  We don't know.  We're just going on the words of the Gawker and Star reporters.  Not a huge problem for me - Donovan and Doolittle are great reporters - but still, they don't have the video in their possession.

Allegedly there's a whole lot more to the story coming out, involving other people.  The video will surely make its way out.

The video will come out eventually.

Rob is being very careful about what he says in hopes that the voters forget about the whole thing in two years. I am certain he knows that the video exists and hos team is working really hard to get it first.

His brother Doug, has been extremely careful about what he's saying too. If this turns out to be a big deal, he can forget about running for the Ontario PC party in the next election. In fact his city career will be over too.

Luckily for both of the their daddy made lots of money, so they never actually have to work after politics.

Apparently if the deal goes south, they are donating the money to a charity which helps people with addictions.

Another reason to not give any money is that even if the video exists and is real it won't change a damned thing. Unfortunately the position of mayor is the one spot in government where you're set once you're in. There is no mechanism for a recall election. You cannot get fired unless you breach specific municipal rules and Ford has already done that and still kept his job. City council can unite as a bloc against him during any vote, but he'll still be mayor. He can't be criminally prosecuted because a video is insufficient evidence and the only witnesses are crack dealers.

On the bright side, he has been fired as a high school football coach, but that was because he called the kids gang-bangers in some inspirational speech he delivered recently.

I'd like to see the video but I'm not going to pony up any cash to do it.  That being said I, like everyone, has found it telling that this jackass mayor has yet to categorically deny that it is him in this video and that he doesn't smoke crack.

Supposedly they want to use this money to start a new crime-free life in Calgary.

(ew.  who chose Calgary as the new home? BC too far away to travel?)

In this case I'd say the Somali crack dealers are the lesser of the two evils, the greater evil being the corrupt mayor of the 5th largest city in North America having a crack habit.

This Kickstarter campaign proves that Rob Ford is worse than crack dealers.

We all knew this, but now it has been scientifically measured.

TheSelphie: skinink: Nick Denton and Gawker Media sure as hell don't need to crowdfund for 200 grand. They're just too cheap to pay for it out of pocket.

This, wtf.

Even assuming they have the money, there's probably not $200k worth of profit to be made by them for buying and releasing the tapes.  I don't really see what's wrong with them going out and asking other people if it's worth a few bucks to have the tapes become public (which is essentially what they're doing).  Nobody is forcing your to donate, and I won't be donating myself.

It does seem like a worthwhile endeavor though.  A mayor that stupid really shouldn't be a mayor anymore.  Not stupid for doing drugs, stupid for doing them on camera and/or with shady folks.  Who knows what he could be blackmailed into doing with this kind of crap.

Let the cops go after the tape so they can release it to the public if they charge the Mayor with whatever.

Yes.  And?

It's not like the money is being traded for crack.  These particular crack dealers have a commodity in their possession that both parties have essentially agreed is valued at six figures.

I would be more concerned about the allegations of the mayor giving money to crack dealers in exchange for crack.

Rob Ford gets caught doing drunken, racist, sexist, impolitic things all the time.  Usually it's "deny", followed by "sheepishly admit", followed by "because fark you, that's why.  i'm the mayor. get out of my office".  Assuming this is true (and it does seem from the Gawker and Star reports to be true) and assuming Gawker raises the money (and this seems likely given their current daily take) his time I don't think "because fark you I'm the mayor" is going to be good enough to get him out of the soup.

I feel for the people in Oklahoma, as well as those in Boston who were affected by the bombs.  But some people want to spend money on different causes. It's all about what's relevant to your life. Imagine if you replace Toronto Mayor with American President.  That fund would have $20 million in it in about 5 minutes.

In one instance you know exactly what your money is being used for, in the other the Red Cross may need a new cappuccino machine.
