D2theMcV: When did news organizations start publishing the names of minors involved in infractions?

in NC I believe at 16 and up you are automatically charged as an adult and must convince the court to let you into the juvenile system.

Seven Enloe High School students face misdemeanor charges and possible school disciplinary action for an incident Thursday in which plastic bottles and balloons filled with water were thrown at students and administrators...

OK...

...ordered students kept in their classrooms.

WTF?

swingerofbirches: I can't remember seeing the names of minors accused of a crime in a paper before. Not saying that it's illegal, just unusual. And the school had 2,300 students with a contracted security team? It just seems like that's an environment that would lead to students to think of themselves as hoodlums from a young age. I've seen those big schools with metal detectors and police, etc. Seems odd to me. Almost like a prison. Imagine a student who was on the edge of being a hoodlum going to a school like that or conversely going to a bucolic school with a normal number of students, lunch in a real dining room versus herding students into those awful cafeterias, etc. I think it makes a difference. I think people behave somewhat according to the environment you put them in and what becomes normalized early on.

You are so very right. Criminalizing behavior and getting kids in that prison pipeline early is a major function of many, if not most, public schools in the South.

justanothersumguy: Wasn't the use of Dihydrogen Monoxide banned by the Geneva Convention after WWI?

Yeah, but then the G W Bush administration used it to torture people.

Thanks Dubya.

When water is made illegal, only criminals will be able to quench their thirst!

bleeding_heart_fascist: A friend of mine was hit by a water balloon thrown out of a moving vehicle. She described it like being hit by baseball bat right in the gut.

// I'll leave it to the physicists to figure out the energy comparison between a baseball bat and a water balloon traveling at 35MPH

Yeah, that sounds about right. I don't feel like doing the math right now, but I'll back it up.
Also depends on the balloon and how full it is... sometimes, those things just refuse to burst, and then you get much better transfer of energy than you would out of something solid (ie, would hurt MORE, not less).

That said, without any real details, going to the degree of arrests and charging assault does seem overkill. Even if the water balloon did hurt someone, the fact this is described as a prank implies accident, as the intent wasn't aggression.
Suspension or expulsion for recklessness, sure. Arrest for assault? really?

He said, "What were you arrested for, kid?"  And I said, "Throwing a water balloon."  And they all moved away from me on the benchthere, and the hairy eyeball and all kinds of mean nasty things, till I said, "And creating a nuisance."  And they all came back, shook my hand, and we had a great time on the bench, talkin' about crime, mother stabbing, father raping, all kinds of groovy things that we was talking about on the bench.

cc_rider: Clearly, the perpetrators must be charged with domestic terrorism for using a weapon of mass destruction.

Enloe has about 2,300 students, and "objects are not to be thrown" simply as a matter of keeping order on the campus, she said.

So, the school has a policy prohibiting the throwing of any objects on campus? I guess they don't play baseball/softball, then?

All were charged with disorderly conduct.

Cole also was charged with simple affray (fighting) and resisting an officer.

Something tells me these kids might be in serious trouble.

Something tells me these kids are all black.

I don't know about that, but one was a Coward.
