Um ... the cost of living is quite reasonable. And the winters aren't usually too terrible. Some of the people are nice.

That's about it.

My thoughts are with the victims of this horrific tornado and I hope for the best for the folks devastated by this tragedy.

That said, Oklahoma is a derp-ridden shiathole.  Anyone who'd choose to live in a third world country like OK is deranged...and not in a good way.

Same goes for TX (excluding Austin).

I foresee a thread full of well-reasoned, thought-provoking points on the superiority of one's geographic location, especially in comparison to the paucity of advantages of all others.  Until the point at which a critical mass of Gotham and Second City denizens stop by, at which point it will denigrate into willy-wagging over pizza.

Its residents are some of the most resilient people around. How exactly do you measure that, and what do the least resilient people look like?  After a rain storm they just lie on the ground and give up?

Yes.  That's why a lot of LA Schools let out for rain.

Sorry but The Flaming Lips are horrible.

My father-in-law is grew up in Oklahoma.  He always felt the place had underrated barbecue, which makes sense as it's between Kansas City and Texas and draws from both traditions.

Other than that, he says his abiding memory of growing up in Oklahoma was "being poor."

I can't imagine the camping is very good there. All the Okies I know complain about the mosquitos and bugs and chiggers. Might have time our next visit with the girlfriends family to coincide with the pigeon races though!

OK has 11 distinct eco-regions.  People think of Oklahoma as being interminably flat, but check out this topo map:

Over 200 lakes created by dams.  More "shoreline" than the east coast.

Your audience is always the smartest, toughest, most resilient, most honest, purest of heart, whatever.  It doesn't matter whether you're in Oklahoma or Manhattan.  Tell the people what they want to hear.

That slideshow was more of an exhibition as to why Oklahoma is some flyover state I never want to visit. I hear they are going to be building a new strip mall. This time it will have a Chili's! That's gonna be super sweet.

I used to complain about the skeeters - then I visited Wallops Island, VA.  The US Navy actually uses mosquitoes from Wallops to power Aegis missiles.

I grew up there.  Yes there are some amazing clumps of derp in that state.   However having lived there the last time this happened I am still proud to have been part of the "anti-Katrina"  ...

Town's leveled, what do you do?
a) Clean up
b) Look for survivors
c) Riot, Loot, Shoot S&R workers.
d) Fire up the grill and make coffee for the locals on your camp stove.

Despite the politcal derp of the region (Looking at you Inhoff) OKC, Moore, and Norman have a historical trend of being decent neighbors when it hits the fan.  Just don't forget to mow the lawn if you are in an HOA... or better yet avoid the HOA's!

Once you're outside of the two major metropolitan areas ... it can be pretty bad. Oklahoma City is much better than it was even 15 years ago.

My wife nags me at least twice a week to find a job elsewhere and "get us the fark out of this place."  We both grew up here. Moved to Texas. Moved back. All our family's here. But the social and political climate is so much worse than when we were growing up.

Our politicians suck, and our uneducated masses keep electing the worst possible people for the jobs.  In the old days, we actually had some forward-thinking politicians and leaders with vision, even though I wouldn't call them liberal. Now they just all try to out-conservative each other, which is turning the place into a backward thinking social-Darwinist Redneckistan.

This.  And when people get angry at their politicians, instead of electing more competent leaders, they think the answer is to elect people who are even FURTHER to the right and will do anything to court that extreme-right populace.  People like Jim Brideoffrankenstine...

Well, they did have the airbrushed truck tail gate, so there's that.

The southeastern part of the state is lovely.  Very green, with lots of rolling hills.  Some nice lakes, too.

For example, Talimena Drive:

I'd stop biatching about living in Oklahoma if they would move into the 21st 20th century on their beer laws. I have to go out of state to buy real beer, or go to a liquor store and buy a limited selection of beer above 3.2.
Choc beer from Krebs Oklahoma is pretty good stuff!

2013-05-23 12:05:43 AM
To those of you biatching about shiatty Oklahoma beer, it's only shiatty if you have shiatty taste in beer. The Bud and Coors is marginally lower in alcohol than other states, 3.2 abw (~4.0 abv) vs 4.5-5.0abv for most Bud?Miller/Coors brands elsewhere. The craft and imports are all still full strength in the liquor store. Yes the law is still stupid, but you only have to drink weak pisswater if you're choosing to buy weak pisswater.

Oklahoma was a reasonable place for so long.  I would even go so far to call some of those politicians of old liberal.  So much of it was motivated by baptist populism.  They were even starting to be merely a bit racist instead of full-blown racist.  But their religious conviction has been used on them as a cudgel by the Randian greed-mongers so even that humanism that used to be such a part of the character of a person from OK is going away now as well.  And a black president?  Forget about it, they're off the deep end now.  Common sense is going to take decades to come back to Oklahoma.  A shame because the only people they're really hurting is themselves.

Oklahoma's a weird state. I have some relatives from there. They have this mix of being levelheaded and highly competent in some ways, and then batshiat derp filled and incapable in others. Then personalitywise, they also have this weird mix of extreme niceness and inclusiveness in some moments and extreme bigotry in others. My impression is that the whole state is kind of like that, but I don't know exactly what makes it come across that way to me. It's not all bad. There's some really good stuff there. But then, also some really terrible stuff.

I agree about Texas. Every time someone says "Everything's bigger in Texas" I respond with "Yes, especially the morons."
