True.

Also, and perhaps even more impressive is how teenaged girls can look bored doing ANYTHING.

Well, her father's been making her prartice that song every day for years; you'd look bored too.

Yes.  Yes I do.

LOL this.

At least she's not doing that corny "guitar solo O face" that so many people do.

Maybe if she had a Steve Hackett or Robert Fripp solo, she'd start making every stupid stagey guitar-solo face in the book.

Impressive playing to be sure.

When she starts creating it herself then I'll be truly impressed and will listen just as intently.

Until then I'll listen to the original.

She speeds up right before the fast part and plays it uber fast. Not really a complaint, so much, as it's common for young kids to want to play as fast as they can. A guy I went to high school with rocked out Beethoven's 5th on his guitar at graduation, and he had the same problem. The timing was great until the piece started to pick up, then he was off to the races.

She is seriously talented and has a bright future ahead of her for cutting heads with a bunch of bar room hacks that think they can play. Now, if she can just keep the same tempo through out the whole song...

/No, I can't play it
//Yes I am jealous

I like how when Eddie did all this crazy stuff, it was 'revolutionary' and now... Meh 14 yr old can do it.  She needs to learn to improvise... mix it up a bit... halfway through, switch over to Hendrix's Star Spangled Banner, then windmill it a bit and light the damn guitar on fire.

14 year olds aren't writing stuff like this, just duplicating it.  Child prodigies have been around forever in music.  Hell, Mozart could have rocked this on harpsichord when he was 10, probably, but it is his creations not his playing that we know him for.

However, there's a word for musicians that can reliably recreate pieces written by others: employable.  All the band members you see at concerts with solo artists and with bands that are nominally only 3 or so people?  Folks like this girl.  They get their assignment and play it expertly, night after night, never needing to go "all widdly-widdly" to quote Daniel Johns.  Hell, everyone you see in a symphony orchestra pit is in that category.

You'd think so at first, but then you would realize that kids like this are doing things like this in order to demonstrate that they got chops. If they were to improve something, some other person would come on and say "Yeah, but can she do Van Halen/Clapton/Hendrix/Segovia worth a shiat?! I think not!"

It's sort of like the guy who accused Picasso of painting Cubist and Abstract because he couldn't really draw real stuff. So Picasso took a napkin and did a photo-realist sketch of a cow and handed it to the guy. (Cool story, bro!)

Good playing, but I notice the videos that get attention are "look at this 14-year old play guitar" or "here's my fetus on the drums"...

...or, "I made this shiatty movie, BUT I SHOT IT ON AN iPHONE!"
And everyone's like "OMG, that movie was shot on an iPhone!"

I wasn't actually hating... and I still like my version better in my head.  Kid can play a guitar though, something I can't say.

Any guitar player now worth a crap can play Eruption.

Been that way for years. You start with Smoke on the Water, move on to Angus Young riffs, then Zep riffs, then the EVH stuff. There is practically nothing 1985-now besides Metallica that has the same influence.

If you could have played Eruption in 1978, that would have been impressive.

I've been listening to a lot of Jamiroquai on Pandora lately.  I didn't really follow them much after "return of the space cowboy" and I now feel that I've missed much.  If you can handle their obviously undying love for disco strings they are a massively talented dance band.

The other track that the drummer was playing was sick, too... a lot of Pretty Purdy influence.

Thanks. My entire day is now to be plagued by stupid.

Technically dificult is technically difficult....period. In ANY year.

It is just as hard to play Bach,Paganini or Rachmaninoff in this century as it was in any time.

....btw,NOTHING makes a pianist of ANY skill level cringe more than "play like Thelonious Monk"

seriously. I have heard piano teachers say that it is basically "impossible" to play like Monk.

This.  Also, Hackett was tapping years before EVH...not that tapping is a particularly hard technique.  She's good, no doubt...but let's see her play Lark's Tongue In Aspic or anything at all from Allan Holdsworth.

One of my favourite guitar clips on the youtube is audio from a club where Eddie tries to play alongside Holdsworth.  It's like a 12 year old wandered onto the stage with a pro.  He sounds so sloppy and unoriginal comparatively.

Hilarious.  You complain about a 40 year old song and then link one that is completely in the style of 1975.

As with all music that involves playing a lot of notes really, really, really fast... I think it's very impressive.  It doesn't do anything for me... but it's damn impressive.  I like my music with... you know... musicality.

It's usually the case that talented young musicians pick up the technical dexterity first and the intangibles later--or at least it seems to be.  That wave of violin prodigies coming out of Asia in the 80s/90s (Sarah Chang, Midori, etc.) was like that.  They don't usually acquire the interpretive/improvisatory skills until they've got some life behind them (if then), no matter how spectacular their chops.

Hope this girl continues to progress and doesn't get sidetracked by the usual high school bullshiat.

Indeed I do. I really really do.  That aside, this lady has insane skills. Even if that is the only thing she can play ( I double dog guarantee it isn't) she would have turbo skill. I am jealous but hope she finds a wicked good paying gig.
