The Aztek is fine, it's a practical car with tons of space for quadcopters and R/C tanks and spare parts.

I believe the Prius looks weird for practical reasons. The Aztek was just simply ugly.

The Prius sets the standard for "strange but there's a reason for it" looks. The Aztek just made no sense when you looked at it, especially when you looked at its MPG as well. This car is just plain with nothing really in its favor or against it, which means people generally will hate it.

The Prius is a smaller Aztek.

Plus, the Aztek is like a Subaru Baja.  It's functional and more or less unique on the road.  Give me one any day of the week.

The Aztec was an initial effort to make a crossover. It led to the more stylish Buick Rendevous, and is grandparent to the highly successful, and pretty damn good looking GM crossovers that are on the roads now. Yes, it always looked dorky, but I see ugly crossovers from other auto manufacturers (I'm looking at you, CRX).

The crossover has essentially replaced the minivan for several demographics, which had replaced the station wagon for families.

The Aztec is also essential for cranking up your meth empire.

The sad thing about the Aztek was that the concept vehicle, had it been built as-is, was actually a decent design..

The production version is a case study in exactly why you don't allow "Design by Committee" to dictate your vision.

There is no reason for the Prius to look that way. The Tesla model S, to give an example, has a lower coefficient of drag and yet it doesn't look retarded. Toyota hasn't seemed to show any desire to innovate since they came out with the Prius 10 years ago. It is as if their engineers all said "well, this thing is so far ahead of its time we will never have to work again".

The Prius is a smaller Aztek.

The Prius was designed with a forward egg shape that directs air flow behind the car to actually reduce air resistance up front as well as to push the car to a small degree with the re-directed flow. If you have ever driven one on a windy highway, you can actually feel the wind push re-direction from behind and see it in the mpg difference. The original Honda Insight had the same front end style for that reason. An Aztek, on the other hand, does not use the forward egg shape. So, while they may look slightly similar from behind, the reasons for the design are not similar.

Poor comparison. Subaru actually builds decent vehicles. GM, however...

I liked the Aztec. I would never bought it, because, you know, "Pontiac", but I enjoyed the "half-van, half-hatchback" aspect.

On the other hand, my ideal vehicle would be a diesel-electric Dodge Sprinter or Ford Transit or Honda Element, so I am probably skewed way too far to the "utilitarian" end of the car-style spectrum.

It is clearly the love child of a Nissan Versa and a Toyota Echo.

Frankly, I'm just glad to see a new car design rather than a new CUV.

But I don't really understand why Mitsu doesn't try selling some of their cars that dominate other markets in the US. What's the worst that could happen? Something worse than the Galant?

I've seen one Aztek in my life that made me think, "This... this is why this vehicle was made."

It was a dark purple, with the grey plastic beneath....

And a well-placed Decepticon logo on the trunk/hatch.

2013-05-22 10:58:22 AM
What an absolutely uninspired generibox.

I expect to see some stars driving it around the Top Gear track.

2013-05-22 11:07:27 AM
The original aztec was a bit more rounded and shapely. If I remember right, they had issues in the production plant that they were going to manufacture the thing in. Something about the side panel installation machine was originally designed for the mini-vans, and were all quite expensive and new. however, the Aztec concept design was to wide or rounded and they couldn't be installed, so they redesigned it into the flat side panel design that was so hideous.

2013-05-22 11:11:11 AM
I wouldn't compare it to the Aztec, but it's not a particularly striking vehicle. Mitsu needs a striking vehicle, because they are pretty much irrelevant in the US car market. Of course, they could be pulling a Suzuki, and blowing us all off for up-and-coming markets in Asia.

I got an Aztek as a rental car once.  I thought it was the ugliest POS I'd ever seen.  Got inside and was impressed at how well I could see what was going on behind me via the rear view mirror.  Still ugly but it does have a practical side.

It looks like every other generic car that's come out in the last 5 years.  Yawn.

And I still don't understand the love for the Mitsubishi Lancer, either.  It's another boxy, boring car.  Surely the Japanese don't believe they're designing something good looking here.  This looks more like "don't take any risks, sell a bunch".

The Aztec was designed to have its own platform, but the bean counters decided they wanted it to sit on the Montana minivan platform in order to save production costs. So many stupid decisions. The inside and even the hatch options were awesome at the time.

To me it looked like some one designed an OK looking hatchback and then an accountant added a boot to it. Put the first gen Focus rear end on it at it would look much better.
