While a sweet gesture, part of me questions the ethicality of this.

kbronsito: neither is the boy's... maybe she could empathize. or she could have invited the boy to buckingham and had one of her other useless relatives fill in for tea with him.

Too bad her dream wasn't to meet a dying young boy with Down's Syndrome and they could have killed two birds with one stone.

MmmmBacon: Helen Mirren is about as awesome as it gets. Especially the verbal beatdown she gave the drummers outside the theater, detailed in another, related story on that page.

A true Lady of class.  Wish we had more of them.

That is horribly depressing.  I get that parents lie to their kids all the time, but going out of your way to publicize the fact that you tricked your kid into believing he will be buried as an actual English knight?

He better really die at this point, or he's going to feel like real asshole later on.

Apparently, I was reading Fark and only just found out it's a blog for someone named MaudlinMutantMollusk who has an issue with the British monarchy. I wish Fark had made us aware there's a redirect on this page.

Wolf892: farkeruk: Wolf892: The royal family are useless...I keep hearing about the tourist dollars that they bring in. But do they? Do people honestly travel to England thinking they are going to meet the queen, or see her drinking tea at a McDonalds? No, they go there to take photos of themselves in front of landmarks...and oh, the argument is that the royal family owns those landmarks...really? Do they? Or does the populace just not bother to take that property back and claim it as historical sites run by the government...Get rid of the royal family and people will still travel to Britain to take photos of themselves in front of all those same landmarks.

Versailles gets more visitors than Windsor Castle and the French executed theirs.

It's heritage that people come here for. We've got whole towns that look like they did back in the 18th century.

So....are we arguing the same thing? ;) Get rid of the royals and people will still come...

Yes. I was just adding more data.

The fact is, if people were coming here to see the Queen, tourism would have died years ago. "I went to the UK to see the Queen and the biatch didn't show up".

//of course, if we had one here in the US, the Republicans would likely be all for it

The Royal family brings in an incredibly high amount of tourist money.

She's also 87 years old and her health isn't the best any more.

But she's not the last of them

/and how much does the "Royal Family" bring in vs their cost?
//how much would it be if their properties were like our national parks?
///royalty is an absurd and outdated concept on any level

Says the guy from California.

The royals bring in way more than they cost. Not even counting the tourist money, the last figure I saw was that they give the State huge revenues from private land holdings, and the State gives them about 20% back in Civil List income. And no, that doesn't count state-owned properties and parks, just the land holdings that belong to the family privately.

I live in one of her dominions. Her job is pretty-much like the ceremonial side of the White House, only bigger. There's no real power, so it really doesn't bother methat she's a hereditary monarch.

Whatever

/defend pointlessness if you will
//it remains pointless
///WTF does being from California have to do with it?

Because in California (aka Hollywood) we worship and idolize random human beings because they can sing, dance or giggle their ass the right way.

At least with the Royals, they come from respectable families that (for the most part) have had great leadership skills and some semblance of honor. Loyalty is something that America is starting to run out of, and at least in the UK the loyalty that most people have to their Queen is something that unites generations.

/It's only pointless to you. To others itz srs bsns and you should respect their opinions in the same way that they tolerate yours.
