HotWingAgenda: "She stayed in character for the whole thing. Oliver thought she was the real Queen, and well, that's good enough for us,"

That is horribly depressing.  I get that parents lie to their kids all the time, but going out of your way to publicize the fact that you tricked your kid into believing he will be buried as an actual English knight?

I tend to disagree. This is a kid who has apparently suffered a great deal in his short life and who will in all likelihood be dead soon. Letting the kid keep that moment for his few remaining days seems a lot kinder to me than letting him know that he really met Helen Mirren instead of the Queen and wasn't really knighted. What would be the point of telling him the truth? Letting him know that life can be cruel? He's got Down Syndrome and several flavors of cancer - developmentally disabled or not, he's probably learned that lesson. Honesty is all well and good, but despite the saying, it's not always the best policy.

To be honest, I'd rather be visited by Helen Mirren playing the Queen rather than the Queen herself.

"Rover went to live on a farm, kids".

The kid's a cancer-stricken Downie. I doubt he'll be scanning the pages of the newspaper, even the Daily Fail, and will discover his folks' cunning plan. He'll be lucky to say "Today is July First".

Yeah, this is kinda farked up. I get that everyone's heart was in the right place and that you can't really tell a kid with a horrible disease "Well, we can't give you what you wanted, but here's an actor", but it is kinda shiatty to go along with an act instead of seeing what they could do about his *next* biggest wish or something. Nice things are nice but maybe in time they'll wish they did something more legitimate. But what do I know, I don't even have a kid, let alone one with a terminal health problem. Just struck me as weird, is all.

FTFA: Mirren brought Oliver and his family to Gielgud Theatre to see her play the Queen in Peter Morgan's The Audience.

Since she hosted them at a play she was acting in, I'm guessing that a kid without disabilities /might/ have figured out she was an actress. The parents, rather than say "Yay! Let's deceive Jr." were more acknowledging that their child couldn't really understand the difference, and that was fine, because it made him really happy for a day. Kudos for Mirren, taking time out of her day and life, to make a kid happy.

The royal family are useless...I keep hearing about the tourist dollars that they bring in. But do they? Do people honestly travel to England thinking they are going to meet the queen, or see her drinking tea at a McDonalds? No, they go there to take photos of themselves in front of landmarks...and oh, the argument is that the royal family owns those landmarks...really? Do they? Or does the populace just not bother to take that property back and claim it as historical sites run by the government...Get rid of the royal family and people will still travel to Britain to take photos of themselves in front of all those same landmarks.

The queen had one real job, to serve the people, and she couldn't be bothered to help a special little boy carry an amazing memory with him into that long good night...f**k her.

He better really die at this point, or he's going to feel like real asshole later on.

Brought to you by the "Make a Wish/Receive a Lie Foundation"

He's on round 3 of fighting cancer, not to mention that Downs kids are very sweet and trusting. I'm pretty sure it's OK to let him be Sir Oliver while he can.

Well, they did have the gall to think maybe we should pay for the part of the Seven Years War fought in our sphere.  We happily settled the new lands and kicked out the Indians against the British promises but they were the ones acting without honor.

We also negotiated the peace treaty w/o inviting our French allies, who would have wanted to get the own concessions during those negotiations (thanks for the help France, we got ours... so fark you!). Face it people... the founding fathers were dicks.

You must be visualizing the Hollywood version of a royal families.  The true history of pretty much all monarch is one of cousin farking, back stabbing, theocratic oppression, screwing over the serfs and proving they have a bigger dick by sending some 'loyal' subjects to die in the farking dirt.

Versailles gets more visitors than Windsor Castle and the French executed theirs.

It's heritage that people come here for. We've got whole towns that look like they did back in the 18th century.

The Royal family brings in an incredibly high amount of tourist money.

She's also 87 years old and her health isn't the best any more.

But she's not the last of them

/and how much does the "Royal Family" bring in vs their cost?
//how much would it be if their properties were like our national parks?
///royalty is an absurd and outdated concept on any level

Says the guy from California.

The royals bring in way more than they cost. Not even counting the tourist money, the last figure I saw was that they give the State huge revenues from private land holdings, and the State gives them about 20% back in Civil List income. And no, that doesn't count state-owned properties and parks, just the land holdings that belong to the family privately.

I live in one of her dominions. Her job is pretty-much like the ceremonial side of the White House, only bigger. There's no real power, so it really doesn't bother methat she's a hereditary monarch.

Whatever

/defend pointlessness if you will
//it remains pointless
///WTF does being from California have to do with it?

Because in California (aka Hollywood) we worship and idolize random human beings because they can sing, dance or giggle their ass the right way.

At least with the Royals, they come from respectable families that (for the most part) have had great leadership skills and some semblance of honor. Loyalty is something that America is starting to run out of, and at least in the UK the loyalty that most people have to their Queen is something that unites generations.

The California comment was to point out that you're a self-appointed advocate for a group of people (the oppressed masses yearning to breathe free under a monarchy) you really have nothing to do with. You have no dog in this fight - why the passion?

You know, you're right. She should just get off the national teat. Yep, she should take back all that property and its revenue she gives to the Nation from her inherited holdings, and give the English back their civil list. I'm sure that would work out well, financially.

So you're supporting the concept we fought a war to dump?

/no, I'm sorry. Hereditary monarchy is as silly to me as religion
