Lady, this is a County that KEEPS electing Sheriff Joe. What I saw out there made me long for the straight up corruption that is Massachusetts. At least the mobbed up asshats out here keep the neighborhoods safe. Seriously. Safest neighborhood I've been in out here had a meth lab--the guys who ran it made for damn sure that their clients weren't anywhere near, and ran anyone off who even thought about attracting attention. The mobbed up neighborhoods? Safe as houses.

Out in Phoenix? Whole different story, whole different ballgame. This is a town that still thinks of itself as the Wild West, only with more housing developments, a lot more industry cash, and a few sports teams and training camps. Even those aren't terrible safe. Worst shootings in the area have happened at or near those arenas. It is the first place that I've thought about carrying since Boston. Then I was making night deposits near the Combat Zone, back when it was still sketchy.  Phoenix and Maricopa is a Disneyland for violence and crazy, and none of the officials nor their Sheriffs nor their police are particularly inclined to do much about it, because the more headlines means harder crackdowns, more press, more funding, and herding folks into communities to flee the nastiness, which happened to be owned by folks who put the folks supposedly trying to "control" the problem into office.

The sad thing?

These are FAR from the craziest folks in business in Maricopa.

I worked for a chef when I first got to Phoenix in the Biltmore area, who was running cover for some high class call girls. They could meet clients, evaluate them, and then use him as their billable, which he got a cut from, so that the agency could launder the cash. Very classy joint, and the kicker? His ex-wife was the sommelier--and just mere months from her Master Somelier status. For the non-food nerds, there are only about 200 Master Sommeliers in the world, and over half of them are in the US. She since got her certification, and is one of 18 women certified here in the US--and his partner. Did I mention that the chef was married? And that he often took out a bit of his "arrangement" out in trade? Oh, and did I mention THAT was part of the reason that his partner became his EX-wife? Don't get me wrong, Christopher did amazing food. He also employed a LOT of illegal labor, engaged in money transactions that even my mobbed up bosses of the past would have raised eyebrows about, and tended to scream at cooks, waitstaff and customers on a regular basis?

Amy? In comparison from what I saw in my years out in Phoenix, is sort of small potatoes, even for the crazy and business-sketchy...

There is sooooo much crazy in the restaurant business.

CSB:

Years back when I was installing AV equipment, we ran across a guy building this beautiful bar who wanted the best equipment money could buy. The place was awesome, and the owner had a wish-list of electronics that was beyond anything we'd put together before. We had several meetings to map out his needs, and signed on the dotted line to provide it.

After ordering up the stuff, we make the trip to install it. We start by putting up the TV mounts.

Owner: "WHOA!...you aren't putting screws into my new walls are you? That can't happen".
Me: "This is where you wanted the TVs, right? How exactly do you suggest I mount them to the middle of the wall?"
Owner: "Not my problem, but you aren't putting screws in my walls."

It went downhill quick from there...to the point of having a very large stock of new TVs and stereo equipment.

I read the article and it struck me as having a whole lot of commentary decrying that MT was  was a fanatic, a fundamentalist, and a fraud, but very little (if any) evidence to support that conclusion. Now, I'm not claiming that the article's author is wrong, but her claims are not supported by the rest of the article. The whole thing was written from a "You'll just have to trust me on this, I'm a professional and I know what I'm talking about" perspective.

Let's say for the sake of argument that the show was indeed edited to deliberately paint the owners as assholes. This wouldn't surprise me. However, I spent a few minutes reading yelp reviews posted before the show aired, and the owners' raging assholery seems a common theme. Anything posted after could be considered suspect.

But even then, this guy's Facebook meltdown and harassment of yelp reviewers more or less proves what everyone is claiming. Dude is a raging douche. Here at Fark we don't talk to each other like that (generally), even when the recipient might deserve it. I know that Facebook has lower standards of dialogue but what the hell, man.

/Ramsay did a show on a restaurant where I happen to know some of the staff. The consensus among the staff was while plenty of the scenarios are scripted, often they aren't. Or at least they weren't in that particular episode. If you watch the show it's pretty obvious what's fake and what's real, and having known the asshole owner (of one of my local joints, not Amy's) I'm inclined to agree.

Yes, it is illegal for employers to take tips, even if the employer doesn't take the "tip credit," that allows tipped workers to be paid below the standard minimum wage, so their defense of "we pay them well above minimum wage" doesn't hold up.  You can pool tips with other tipped employees, but not with the employer.

I lived across the street from two houses of murderers, a house full of drug runners, a drug lab next door. And the cops and the judges and the prosecutors all knew what was going on. They got their bribes so they did nothing to stop the two women--one of them pregnant--from being strangled, the break-ins, stolen cars, the 30 illegals sleeping in one house for $100 a month per mattress.

Phoenix has always been the place where the Vegas mob kills people.

There was a cop murdered while on duty. The city wouldn't put his name on the memorial for cops killed on duty.

Well, yeah. Sheriff Joe.

The icing on the "homemade" cake would be if they were laundering money for old Joe and this brought him down.

According to the waitress that got fired on the show, that Pita Jungle is pretty much always overflowing with people.

Mother Teresa was a con artist? Man, you can't trust anyone these days.

In fact, now that you mention it, yes. Recommend reading the full book, but that's a good start.

Allow me to do your research for you, since you can't even manage to comprehend a byline with the author's name in it.

I didn't ask for a thesis on the woman. I was presented with an article and commented that the criticism in the article wasn't supported by the evidence in the article. It's a valid critique.

Yeah that's why I said it's a good start, but that I'd recommend reading Hitchens full book on the subject, along with God is not Great.  Of course they're ranty, since you know, look who we're talking about, but the man did do deep research.  The Vatican doesn't interview J Random Slander-ist regarding beatification after all.

Reading that Wiki article, there's not much in the way of supporting evidence that isn't [Citation Needed]'d. A lot of it looks like stuff that was relatively minor and trumped up in an attack on Mother Teresa.

Now, the things that did stick with me is the idea that "She wasn't actually central to the issue, and that others did far more work than she did", but she certainly was the face of Western efforts to assist the poor in India, something that did help to keep the issue going.

Was she a Saint? I don't know, and seeing as I'm not Catholic Christian (Or any other sort of Christian), I do not intend to make a judgement on such. However, based on what I've seen, I don't think she was 'evil', as is implied by the criticisms leveled against her.

After watching the video, it seems that Kitchen Nightmares was more real than some people think.

I have never watched it before but have seen similar shows so I understand the formula. I suspected this episode was less staged shiat and more real because Ramsay got quieter and quieter as the episode went on. They didn't need him to create drama, nutso and craycray were doing a great job by themselves.

I saw he. In fact, he never raised his voice. He seemed to be in a daze, the whole way.

/now in the right thread.

Re the stripper thing, I couldn't really imagine her ego allowing her to work for someone else after having been the one in charge herself for so long.
Then again, whatever they do will probably bomb eventually anyway.

If there was some reason for them to get their assets frozen that would be the icing on the cake.

Records show Amy has served time in federal prison and has a history of liens and judgments.

In 2003, Amy Bouzaglo pleaded guilty to misuse of a Social Security number when she applied for a $15,000 bank loan. At the time, her name was Amanda Bossingham. She spent about a year in prison beginning in 2008.

dickfreckle: Let's say for the sake of argument that the show was indeed edited to deliberately paint the owners as assholes. This wouldn't surprise me. However, I spent a few minutes reading yelp reviews posted before the show aired, and the owners' raging assholery seems a common theme. Anything posted after could be considered suspect.

The American version of this show is renowned for manufacturing drama, but not for this episode.  A former employee who has been widely interviewed said the producers portrayed everything very accurately.

The employee said the producers actually had to deescalate a potential physical altercation by clearing out the place and paying all the checks.  If the reality 'stars' are crazy enough, there's no need to fabricate drama.

hubiestubert: The sad thing?

This reminds me of a section of Bourdain's "Kitchen Confidential" where he describe all the shady stuff going on behind the scenes in the restaurant biz (gun running, drug dealing, etc).

I've never been able to figure out why people who shouldn't want attention on themselves seek attention for themselves. It's like the guy who was on American Idol a few years ago who threw a fit when his brother was kicked off the show and it soon came out he had outstanding warrants or something.
