This man had  כדורים  , which if teh Googles is correct, is at least "balls" using a loosely translated term in Hebrew.  Or he had giant  beytsim if you go Yiddish, but my spelling could be off.

Is this one of those things where the last surviving member of a club gets to keep the entire treasure?  Or does he have to fight the other last member to death to gain special powers.  Cause either one of tthose things wwould be bad ass.  I wonder if aanyone owns his rights, that'd make an awesome movie.

It's funny, when I was younger and full of piss and vinegar, I'd start fights without regard to the outcome because I was always optimistic that I'd win.  But I think if I was in an institutional setting, like these men were, I'd go along because I'd keep hoping for a magical solution to the hell I was in.

Now that I'm older and can recognize hopeless situations more readily, I'd be more likely to join a resistance.  Not because I think there's a better chance of changing things, but because I'm more ready to die.  When I was young death was frightening, but now that I'm old it's just there.  You can't avoid it.

Maybe these men reached the "ready to die" phase early because they knew it was going to happen anyway.  That's a terrible conclusion for a young man to reach, but good for them that they acted on it.  It's even better that this man lived to a ripe old age.

This.
What Hitler was hoping to gain from WWII was oil reserves and material resources to continue building his empire. If not for people resisting at every opportunity, Germany would have raped the land without remorse.
We got to see the extent of Stalin's legacy. Russia turned into a farking mess.

Americans aren't saints, but it could be far worse.

Well, I guess 750 out of 6 million that decided to fight back isn't too bad.

i.r.id10t: Or you'd grow a pair and realize that you are fighting not just for your life, but the lives of your family, neighbors, and your entire community...

That's the eternal question - if you don't have the resources to win, then does fighting jeopardize the lives of your family, neighbors, and community?  And can you sacrifice their lives at all?  If you do, what if everybody dies, which is essentially what happened?

"Grow a pair" is a simplistic answer.  What the Warsaw Uprising asked was "is it better to die fighting oppression than to live in it?"  Those people answered yes.

"They're going to start the final resettlement now. We know what it means. We sent someone out. Zygmunt. A good man. His orders were to follow the trains out of Warsaw. He got to Sokolow. A local railwayman told him the tracks are divided, one branch leading to Treblinka. He said every day freight trains carrying people from Warsaw forked to Treblinka and returned empty. No transports of food are ever seen on that line. And civilians are forbidden to approach the Treblinka station. They're exterminating us. Won't take them long. We're sixty thousand left. Out of half a million. Mostly young people. And this time we're going to fight."

For hundreds of years the Jews survived by "going along" with whatever the European governments threw at them.  When Hitler rose to power, the attitude was so firmly ingrained into them that far too few fought back.  At the end of the war the survivors had come to the realization that they had been wrong, that it's better to fight back.  I think that's one of the reasons why Israel has such a bad-ass army.

So I assume you are in favor of Israel's rather vigorous and violent defense of jews since then?  Since we know what will happen to them without a violent and vigorous defense.

If you take down one of them you break even. If you kill five before they get you that's 500% profit. The idea is to make your death count for something.

Regardless of my criticisms of the Israeli gov't etc., I'm very fiercely anti-anti-semitic. If they start pogroms against the few here Jews in Lexington KY I'll have to jump in; if it happens in Brooklyn I'll have to go there. Very few of the world's Jews are actually implicated in the evil deeds of the Israeli government.

Then again, remember that the Nazi's main objection to the Jews is that Jews were (allegedly) smarter. Trying to "improve" the world by killing off the smart people? What a stupid idea.

RIP to a true hero. These people won nothing but an honorable death. They had a choice of either walking timidly to the showers, or dying a hero, and chose the later.

Regardless of who in history wants to use their sacrifice for their own gains.

The One True TheDavid: Then again, remember that the Nazi's main objection to the Jews is that Jews were (allegedly) smarter. Trying to "improve" the world by killing off the smart people? What a stupid idea.

Not necessarily true. The Nazis believed the Jews were more devious, not necessarily more intelligent. In fact, this was a main point of contention between the members of the Wannasee conference - the SS leadership treated them like idiotic cattle, while the Non-SS treated them like intellectual beings.

TV's Vinnie: Are there any Wehrmacht from that battle who are still alive? Let's see which one ends up being the last one alive and then we'll declare the winner.

The Wehrmacht is not the SS. They were two distinctly separate things.

I know I'd have the guts. The hard part is having the brains to do it in a way that has real effect. The "Nazi" who beats me to death for spitting on him can always wash his uniform afterward: that kind of "guts" is just stupid.

Common sense. Can somebody spare any?

Anyway those people went through hell and gave 'em hell right back. Major respect to all those that went through that.

Go ahead and snivel, ya whiney kvetchniks...

But answer this: The Jews that populated Palestine at the founding of  Israel in 1948... did they really want to be there?

The answer is a deafening NO!!! They were dragged there, kicking and screaming - victims of "circumstance",  of convenient "coincidence".

So who did want them there, and had been working for over a half-century to get them there?

Your anger, your hatred, your fears... have they been misdirected?

I remember hearing an interview of a woman who was a little girl in the Warsow Ghetto. Despite her mother trying to shelter her (she even said watching Life is Beautiful was somewhat reminiscent of her relationship with her mom) she definitely had this sense of dread and a not far off end while living in the ghetto. Her uncle used their apartment to stash weapons while her mom would smuggle in good food for trade (and to make sure they didn't starve). Basically they were well aware that if they boarded any train or van as directed they were going to die.

Luckily for her she and her mother were able to take advantage of the chaos and sneak out what with looking like Western European types instead of Jews. I'm guessing her mother had a pair of ginormous brass balls for having been regularly up to no good during that period and never getting caught.
