"2011 was the year of Elizabeth Smart..."

It's 2013 now.

rooftop235: Heathen: skinbubble: lennavan: So I clicked, all giddy at the excitement of seeing someone tell Nancy Grace off.

"I really, to be frankly honest, don't appreciate you bringing this all up."

That's it?

Not taking the troll bait and sticking to the high road is better than sinking to Nancy Grace's level and doing it in a mature, level headed way is bonus points.

screw that, jam a #2 pencil into her throat

No one should waste a perfectly good pencil on that biatch.

So use a broken pencil.

Warthog: If you want to spend your time on something worthwhile, here is a link to Elizabeth Smart's remarks at the Johns Hopkins human trafficking forum.  The video runs 12:50, and is surprisingly engaging.  This is the speech that gave rise to the throw-away line in TFA about her having spoken out against abstinence education.  Her remarks are actually more nuanced than that.

Was going to post this link. She's actually speaking against a particular bullet point in most abstinence education curricula, the one that says not to have sex because you'll be worthless to society afterwards. Very interesting and horrifying speech for many reasons.

BYU has a huge campus in Hawaii. Chances are this dude is a mormon studying at BYU, and they got married in Hawaii for that reason.

Yes it was.

I do admire Elizabeth Smart. She has handled herself well in the years since her kidnapping and has really tried to use her history to make a difference.

I agree both on the low quality of the article and the praise for Elizabeth Smart. On a more superficial level, the article did give another reason to complement Elizabeth Smart - she has a pretty decent sense of style. I'm not sure if it's a blouse or dress she's wearing in that photo, but she wears it well and I hope that the tasteful use of polka dots becomes more popular in the future.

While I can't comment on the respect issue, mainstream Mormons haven't endorsed polygamy in over 120 years.

Nobody ever used reason to become religious so you can't expect the religious to act reasonably when faced with a challenge. She was fourteen, it's not her fault her parents failed her.

Although i applaud her efforts, trying to teach "abstinence only" is not going to convince rapists or kidnappers not to kidnap or rape. I'm sorry what she went through, and I'm glad she's for the victims, but a rapist is going to rape, they don't really care what you think or want to teach. If they did, they wouldn't rape you in the first place.

/no shiat, Grace was trolling for juicy emotional answers, to painful questions she shouldn't have brought up in the first place.  For ratings. What a hag. She's like a female howard stern, but with less ethics and class.  Would have been better if she had come back with something like "I dunno, how did you feel when your dad farked you in the ass? " or " I thought i had met the worst vile disgusting puke ridden lowest common denominator in my kidnappers.  But, at least when they were farking me, you knew they were going to.  You, on the other hand, are supposed to be a professional journalist, but i see, that you are just trying to fark me for ratings in the very thin guise of being empathetic.  At least with my kidnappers, they were honest about what they are.  You are just raping me again for bigger numbers in the neilsons. Go fark yourself you ugly flapped out hag.

Really?

A Christian is someone who believes Jesus Christ died on the cross to save them from their sins and give them eternal life.
John 3:16 says: "For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life." (Love how fundies say gays cannot be Christian. what do they do with that "everyone"? But I digress)

Mormons deny the sufficiency of Christ's death for salvation. They also deny the Trinity and that there is one immortal God. The goal of Mormonism is that we all become as 'gods' becoming both immortal and divine, blurring the creator/creature distinction. They believe God the Father was once a man, just like you or me. For Mormons, Jesus isn't the only son of God, and he's not eternally begotten of the Father

Uh, these are contradictory. Part of the "endorsing polygamy" was kicking the 18-year-old boys the fark out because they were competition for the women. I suppose that could be seen as a positive thing though since it is saving those boys from a religion.

"CAN YOU AT LEAST TELL US THE DETAILS OF YOUR RAPE? A REAL BLOW BY BLOW THAT EVERYONE WANTS TO HEAR!"

To me it sounds like she wants to change the message that women are worthless after they are de-virginized and probably change a lot of other things about it. I think maybe Mormons and Christians in general are going to be more likely to listen to a message from someone in their community than from someone who says "You guys are stupid and your religion is stupid and I'm an athiest now." She wants to be a Mormon and she wants to make their religion better- I don't have a problem with that.

This is actually a decent example of how ubiquitous the hyperbolic language of normal message board and blog chatter really is. Because someone wasn't directly compared to Hitler while being called Roseanne Barr's taint cheese, we literally don't recognize it as a tell off.

Alternatively, it was a really farking weak tell off.  It's definitely one of the two.

I'm pretty sure most people in this thread would agree Nancy Grace needs a bit more than a courteous "I don't appreciate that."  I guess I was just hoping for more.  Something more recent woulda been good too.

Meh, it's arguable.

I'm on mobile, so perhaps, if the article links to a video, someone can tell me what Ms. Smart's tone was. If her tone of voice was one like "Bring it up again, and I shall make it my life mission to end you", then that can be pretty damn effective.

Hmm, interesting point.  In that case, though, women are being treated as a commodity, a resource to be managed, rather than autonomous human beings.  I think determining whether or not that is a better status than being one who is given a fancy title and run out of town so as not to represent competition over said resource might just be a personal judgement call.

I'm not sure that GW was really claiming to speak as a direct conduit to God, however.  Politicians are expected to be pragmatic ("Politics is the art of the possible." -- Otto von Bismarck), and in 1789 abolition would have been incompatible with uniting all the colonies.  A religious leader, by contrast, is supposed to define ideals to aspire to (e.g., "If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also." -- Jesus).

Actually, there are loads of Catholic doctrine, as well as Mormon doctrine (The only two religions I know well enough and that have a centralized figure) that suggest that a prophet or pope is indeed fallible, except when acting in certain offices or under certain circumstances. The biggest example being Moses.
