ya know really they should've had super bowl 49 in san francisco and super bowl 50 at lambeau for the token cold weather game instead of met life (which has about as much NFL history and character as a parking garage)

To long-time SF Bay Farkers, I have a question:

Ignoring the questionable relocation of the stadium to Santa Clara (figuring that the increased suckage for SF non-car people is equal to the reduced suckage for Silicon Valley fans), how is this any worse than the current location?

At least looking at Google Maps, the old location is served by 1 freeway and 1 bus route, is a significant walk from the nearest Caltrain, isn't anywhere near BART, has what look to be major parking issues, and is in the middle of a freaking neighborhood, so getting from the freeway to the game would be problematic.  Additionally, any fans coming over from the East Bay would be forced to use the Bay Bridge and travel through the 24-hour clusterfark that is 101 through downtown.

The new location is served by 2 freeways and the light rail (and possibly VTA buses, but those tend to be even more of a clusterfark than the light rail), is an even more significant walk from the nearest Caltrain, has a ridiculous amount of parking, and is on a 4-lane highway instead of in the middle of a neighborhood.

I'm not saying it's perfect, but I can't see how Candlestick ever worked well.

Seattle competes for division title; give 'em the toughest away sked in the division, AND make them play the maximum number of games on the East Coast at the time slot most disadvantageous to West Coast teams.
San Francisco competes for division title; give 'em an easier away sked, give them only ONE game in the most disadvantageous time slot for a West Coast team.

Seattle uses PEDs; suspend everyone!
San Francisco uses PEDs; don't test 'em.

Seattle builds new stadium; no talk of ever having a Super Bowl.
San Francisco builds new stadium; give 'em a Super Bowl ASAP.

I see you, NFL.

Yeah, came to say this. Santa Clara, where the new stadium is, is very much anti-fabulous. Rather drab and boring. It's a college town, but it's a Jesuit College town.

So are they going to continue the California sports team theme by becoming "The San Francisco 49ers of Santa Clara"?

One team does it and it's considered a theme?

Nah, I'm just keeping myself amused.

The Los Angeles Raiders of Oakland
The Los Angeles Dogders of Brooklyn
The Sacramento Kings of Kansas City
The Los Angeles Kings of We Have a Hockey Team?
The LA Galaxy of Beckhams

Haha, fair enough.
Also I remembered the Inland Empire 66ers of San Bernardino, so apparently there is a theme.  Fittingly, now they are the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim's minor league affilliate in the California League.  So yeah, my bad

It's been talked about.  The team said no.   Link.  Holy shiat, you're good at being the stereotypical persecuted Seahawks fan.

mjohnson71: PacificaFitz: At least it won't be played in the freaking snow like next year

What's wrong with that?

Yeah, good ol' ESPN had an opinion article that said Super Bowl L should be at Lambeau Field. I could have seen that since they won the first Super Bowl. Then again, if they give Green Bay one, when will they let Pittsburgh host one?

Well, let me just say first off, the Stick sucks, always has. It's a cold, concrete dungeon in the worst part of town. How many 49er fans actually live in the city anyway, my guess is not as many as you think, in fact a stadium in the South Bay will be much better for fans anyway, and since the Niners have been practicing in SC for like the last 30 years, you might even say they are finally home. When the city of Santa Clara bought the property at Great America from Marriott back in 1984, it was the best thing they ever did. Go Santa Clara, and I don't care what you name the team, I'm fine with the people that will come here and being able to ride my bike to go to a game.

If she's still hot 4 years after super bow L, think LIV Tyler should be the halftime show for superbowl LIV

Pinner: Should have given SF Super Bowl LIX

I think you mean XLIX which would be 49

Then the NFL could really shiat itself.

That's about whether they put in a bid this time. Since 2002 (league realignment, 32 teams):

Houston built a new stadium; they got a SB.
Arizona built a new stadium; they got a SB.
Indianapolis built a new stadium; they got a SB.
Detroit built a new stadium; they got a SB.
NY built a new stadium; they got a SB.
Dallas built a new stadium; they got a SB.
SF is building a new stadium; they get a SB.

Let's not act as though it's bidding that matters; there's clearly an unwritten rule that if the people buy you a new stadium, the NFL hooks you up with a Super Bowl as part of the "Look, we're NOT totally f*cking you!" campaign. I suppose that realistically the problem was Seattle not waiting until after Goodell took over to build the stadium, since apparently even the "crappy weather" excuse that would've kept them, Philly, New England, and Chicago from hosting seems to have been repealed for NYC.
