A giant floating toilet that doesn't flush.

Some of the local travel agencies don't even list Carnival cruises in their ads any more. Talk about brand destruction.

No shiat.

My guess, as Carnival ships are dry docked they will be quietly rebranded into Princess ships.

I am now laughing at the articles written by "analysts" who said that those disasters would have no impact on Carnival profits and to keep investing in them, because people will quickly forget about all this and immediately want to get back to cruising like none of this ever happened.

All this has eaten into profits.

I would have written "All this has seeped into profits"

That's too bad. There was a time when Etiquette rules the waves.

I remember those too, and also thought those were full of crap (just like the Carnival ships). People shelling out hundreds (if not thousands) for a cruise want to know they'll have a good time, not end up drifting in a dark oversized Johnny on the Spot.

Carnival might be able to come back from this but it's going to be a while in coming.

They needed some time to dump their stock.

I doubt it, the cruise industry runs on very thin margins, to the point where many times the profits (if any) rely solely on liquor sales. If they can't fill the boats even at giveaway prices they'll probably run out of cash fairly quickly and default on their loans on their boats and then it'll either be restructuring (and likely rebranding) or liquidation. I hope it's a liquidation so the idiots in charge that cut back on maintenance lose their jobs.

Sadly, the idiots rarely get what they deserve.

Meh, Carnival is just one of ten brands owned by a parent company.  If the Carnival and Costa brands go tits up, they'll likely just move a lot of their newer construction over to other brands (or make up a new one) and chug along.  Princess and Holland-America are held by the same company, so they can just pick up whichever ships the parent company wants to keep around and sell the rest off when Carnival itself goes to shiat.

People buy Fiats and Dodges in this country too. And vote in Bush *twice*. Lady Gaga and Justine Briebert have sold more albums than the Beatles, and American Midol and Glee are two of the highest rated TV shows in recent history.

Are we *really* surprised Carnival is still in business? Go to most Walmarts some time, that's Carnival's core demographic right there.

They deserve each other.

Never underestimate the capacity for Americans to buy something based on its price alone. Carnival will be fine.

An evening stroll on the poop deck doesn't carry the same sense of romance now.

Years ago, my wife and I took a 3-day Carnival cruise from Cape Canaveral to the Bahama's. She was working in South Carolina for the week, so we met there for a getaway.

When we showed up to embark, I was shocked. I'd been on a cruise before, but it was nothing like this. I thought I was at a casting call for "The Jerry Springer Show".

We were most looking forward to the dinners, which were amusingly tarnished by our tablemates that showed up to dinner with their aluminum Bud Light bottles and complained about everything. Complaints included:

- "Why isn't this Tuna Tartar cooked?"
- "This Prime Rib is pink. Don't you have a fancy steak like a ribeye?"
- "What's a risotto? Can I get a loaded baked potato instead?"

Our favorite was the guy with gold teeth who could never understand the menu. The last night, he gave up and asked for a kids menu and ordered dinosaur shaped chicken nuggets.

When my wife got her meal, he asked what it was.
"Veal"
"Veal?" he said, trying to place the name. "Is that fish?"
"Uh, no. It's....baby cow."

"Hmmmm" he said, nodding and popping a triceratops nugget into his mouth.

I don't get cruise ships.

Why would I want to vacation on a floating hotel that I can't leave?

And paper over their losses.

The weird thing is, they haven't lowered their prices. I would've assumed they'd be doing fire sales after all the hubub.

Looks like pretty low prices to me. Go to  http://www.vacationstogo.com/ and compare to the other lines.

David Foster Wallace - 'a supposedly fun thing I'll never do again'

A hilarious and insightful essay that helped me decide to never, ever, go on a cruise. This will assist my plans to never be ankle deep in feces.
