There was a guy who had no arms, got a job ringing the bell at the cathedral. He couldn't pull the bell, so you know, he'd just head butt them.

One day, in order to impress the priests, he really went at it. Knocked himself out stone cold and fell from the tower. Someone asked the priest if he knew who the guy was. "I don't remember his name, but his face rings a bell."

It's such a no-no that in medieval times if someone wanted to kill themselves the preferred method was to drown a baby.  The thinking was, the baby has not yet committed any sins and will go straight to heaven and before the court/mob murders you they have to offer you a priest to whom you can confess all your sins.  Which means you die forgiven and *also* go to heaven.

Hmmmm.... interesting theological question.  Is the sin in the intent or the resulting action.  Obviously someone who attempts suicide and lives can then confess and repent.  So if someone attempts suicide and then repents before they die are they forgiven?  Is the sin the end result of the successful suicide or the beginning of the attempt?

I don't think he was Catholic.  FTA, quoting his blog:

The essence of a man is in his existence and not in another world. It's here and now that you have to play out your destiny until the last second. And this last second has as much importance as the rest of the life.

Seems like an interesting man.  From Wikipedia:

Venner was a specialist regarding weaponry and hunting and wrote several books on these subjects. His principal historical works were: Baltikum (1974), Le Blanc Soleil des vaincus (The White Sun of the Vanquished) (1975), Le Cœur rebelle (The Rebel Heart) (1994), Gettysburg (1995), Les Blancs et les Rouges (The Whites and the Reds)(1997), Histoire de la Collaboration (History of the Collaboration) (2000) and Histoire du terrorisme (History of Terrorism) (2002). If he was willing to blow his brains out because two guys could get married, then he obviously had some major issues. I guess that since gay marriage wasn't outlawed in France anymore, there was nothing to keep him from giving in to his lust for hot man ass and took the easy way out.

One can hope that Fred Phelps and his clan decide to make this their new form of protest.

Well...

Contrary to early reports, Dominque Venner was not Catholic, and various French media outlets described him as a "pagan." In a 2002 interview, Venner criticized Christianity's doctrine of peace and tolerance. "We must realize that in the face of threats of our time, such as the spread of African Muslim immigration, a guilt-provoking, universal, anti-racist, non-violent religion offers little help," he said.
Venner also spoke of his affection for the churches and cathedrals of Europe, despite his distate for religion. "I myself come from a Catholic family and I am always moved when I contemplate our ancient cathedrals or our small country churches which... are intrinsically European."

"I am healthy in body and mind, and I am filled with love for my wife and children. I love life and expect nothing beyond, if not the perpetuation of my race and my mind. However, in the evening of my life, facing immense dangers to my French and European homeland, I feel the duty to act as long as I still have strength. I believe it necessary to sacrifice myself to break the lethargy that plagues us. I give up what life remains to me in order to protest and to found. I chose a highly symbolic place, the Cathedral of Notre Dame de Paris, which I respect and admire: she was built by the genius of my ancestors on the site of cults still more ancient, recalling our immemorial origins.
While many men are slaves of their lives, my gesture embodies an ethic of will. I give myself over to death to awaken slumbering consciences. I rebel against fate. I protest against poisons of the soul and the desires of invasive individuals to destroy the anchors of our identity, including the family, the intimate basis of our multi-millennial civilization. While I defend the identity of all peoples in their homes, I also rebel against the crime of the replacement of our people.
The dominant discourse cannot leave behind its toxic ambiguities, and Europeans must bear the consequences. Lacking an identitarian religion to moor us, we share a common memory going back to Homer, a repository of all the values on which our future rebirth will be founded once we break with the metaphysics of the unlimited, the baleful source of all modern excesses.
I apologize in advance to anyone who will suffer due to my death, first and foremost to my wife, my children, and my grandchildren, as well as my friends and followers. But once the pain and shock fade, I do not doubt that they will understand the meaning of my gesture and transcend their sorrow with pride. I hope that they shall endure together. They will find in my recent writings intimations and explanations of my actions."

Sounds like he loved his people and heritage.

p.s. That is headline of the year.

You guys shouldn't be surprised if the next antigay parade, I mean, anti-gay marriage parade ends up with lots of burning cars and violence.
I laughed my head off ,a few months ago, at a pamphlet I found in my mailbox which featured village people-like folk holding their hands, walking down the street with half their butts hanging out and captioned with : WOULD U WANT THESE PEOPLE RAISING CHILDREN?
That's how out of touch the religious groups are over here...

Irish people have parades on St. Patrick's to get drunk and celebrate their heritage... Italians do it on Columbus Day (Ok... maybe these aren't the best examples of white, since racist ass white people didn't want to count them for a few generations). But German Americans get the Steuben parade which was even featured on Ferris Bueller... an iconic American film. Basically every Scandinavian and Eastern European country has some festival or parade around the cities where their immigrant communities formed in Canada and America. But yeah... white people, they just can't catch a break or celebrate their heritage. My heart weeps for the oppression they endure.

The difference, of course, is that for, e.g. Hispanics, you don't only have the Puerto Rican Day parade or Cinco de Mayo; you have the active promotion of a collective Hispanic/Latino identity.  To see how different that is from the situation among whites, try to imagine the NFL celebrating "White Heritage Month."

Also, that Irish or Italians were once upon a time not considered white is one of the internet's favorite talking points, but it is horseshiat.

It seems unlikely that it was just the gay marriage thing. I wonder what that letter of his contains.
Even if they somehow stopped all the incompatible-with-European-culture immigration from the third world, there's already too many Africans and Arabs in France for actions like this to make any tangible difference. You guys lost.

I'd bet he was getting ill or something and wanted to make a political statement before dying.

Especially if that oppression means that they have to watch someone else get married to a partner of which they don't, themselves, approve. "I can't bear the thought of two men or two women getting married, and so to express my outrage, I'll write some flowery prose, selfishly kill myself, and resign myself to the dustbin of history while white supremacist chuckleheads interpret my stupidity as 'white people celebrating and preserving their heritage.'"

What a mook.

Basically. I love how self-important the person who coined that utterance must feel, that he thinks only his stark self-sacrifice will allow all us lotus-eaters to come to our senses and become proper bigots, as society intended, when it comes to same-sex marriage.

I'll give that douchenozzle credit for two things:

1) He didn't kill anyone else.
2) He didn't damage the cathedral.

But I can't help indulging in the dark humor of the notion that people in a demographic that is dying out think that killing themselves is going to help the cause.  Less people=more influence??  Screwy math, there.

If France was starting to come under Islamic rule, then why would gay marriage get legalized there?

Obviously, logic wasn't his strong suit: he was so afraid of France being ruled under Sharia Law, but was obsessed with making France a theocracy.

scottydoesntknow: unchellmatt: There was a guy who had no arms, got a job ringing the bell at the cathedral. He couldn't pull the bell, so you know, he'd just head butt them.

One day, in order to impress the priests, he really went at it. Knocked himself out stone cold and fell from the tower. Someone asked the priest if he knew who the guy was. "I don't remember his name, but his face rings a bell."

The next day, the dead bell ringer's twin brother comes in for the again vacant bell ringer position. He also has no arms. They lead him up to the bell tower, he runs at the bell, trips and falls to the sidewalk below.

The same two guys walk by.

The first asks, "Do you know him?"

The second guy responds, "No, but he's a dead ringer for the guy we saw yesterday."

He was actually a triplet. The same with the arms. They lead him up to the tower and what should happen? He falls and dies.

The same two guys walk by.

The first asks, "Do you know him?"

The second guy responds, "No but I hear he was a real chimer with the ladies."
