(Hodinkee)   Don't you love it when you buy an old watch at a garage sale for $40 and it turns out to be the geiger counter watch James Bond used in Thunderball and might be worth $90k?   (hodinkee.com) divider line 76

If you don't remember this particular Bond watch, he wore it in Thunderball and used this converted chrono-cum-geiger counter to track down two nuclear bombs stolen from NATO.

GIS uncovered a few I would like more.  This Omega Seamaster has a pretty cool back, though it's not necessarily one Bond wore.

If the seller can't document its provenance, could the watch end up confiscated as belonging to, say . . . EON Productions?

I'd hate to pay all that money for it, then have it confiscated to be returned to the rightful owner.

I have two Casios.  One that I bought when I was a kid and found in a closet in my grandpa's old house.  Still works.  Bought a new battery and watch band, good as new.

And this one that I bought a year or two back because it looked neat.

Hmmm as some one posted: If it was lost and now found and actually *is* the watch used in the movie HOW can the garage sale person claim to own it/how can the garage sale buyer claim to own it/ and how can Christie's sell it if it's been lost/stolen?

It's a good gamble, $20-$40 for a few hundred $ return. Pour in servicing and a band and you might have a $1500 watch. At least for a collector, I think this one was fugly.

I'm also a Casio fan from way back, and I actually had this watch in my younger days (early 1990s) when I
was in my Digital/Analog phase.  I wasn't impressed with it, actually:  as I recall the analog clock lost
minutes every week.

This is my current watch:  the SGW-100:

World time, 5 alarms, countdown timer, thermometer, compass.  It has everything I ever wanted in a watch.

agreed.

i did find a gold baume & mercier at a garage sale once. early 60s, manual wind. one of the hands had broken off, but it ticked when wound. it was on a godawful speidel twist-o-flex band. i asked the guy how much. he said, "two dollars, because i like the band."

i bought it and traded it for a '66 omega seamaster a week later.

Speaking of Casios, I am currently wearing this watch:

www.casio-usa.com

Kind of old-school nerdy.  And, yes, they still make them.

Do people still wear wristwatches? Mine became a dedicated "bathroom/shower clock" (sitting on top of the toilet) almost 10 years ago (and strangely, I haven't changed the battery in that time and it still works). Then again, I'm poor and it was a cheap digital Casio (looks like the same one in FlashHarry's post actually)

Does it have any provenance?  Cause without it, the best I can give you is $10 in this condition.

$40 for any Breitling is pretty much a bargain.

MBZ321: Do people still wear wristwatches?

Yeah, easier to check than a pocketwatch (aka "cellphone").
